Default AvatarMeet 2013 - As it happens

Kaltx ma ayeylan,

Being as AvatarMeet 2013 is upon us, I though I would start a thread to enable aysmuke s aystmukan to share the event with those who can't make it so they can be a part of it...in a way.

Some have already arrived in Washington DC and started lapping up the sights and sounds of AvatarMeet 2013. Others are on their way. As for me, well, I've started my journey and I'm now in a hotel waiting to get on my Ikran tomorrow to join the clan. Hopefully we will be able to keep you up to date with the adventure to Hell's Gate and the expedition into the Pandoran forest later in the week.

Eywa ngahu and safe journeys,

Alan

Just a quick update...

I managed to meet up with Sarah, Mikko and Ali and we had Pizza - Irayo Mikko. *Om, yom, yom.

I also managed to hand over the Meet Up Survival Guides and badges. *So hopefully a few of them now have them.

On the way back I found a large screen erected on the Mall and a shed...no stadium load of people sat on the grass. *So I hung around to see what they were waiting for. *Turns out it was an open air cinema! *I ended up watching Bugs Bunny and the first bit of ET, which they were showing.

For some reason that I have not been able to figure out yet, everyone got to their feet and started waving there arms in the air when the HBO Logo came up!*Maybe it is a locals custom?

Well, it's 04:50 ish and I'm awake! I guess I'm still on UK time - hehehe. Later on today we will hopefully be visiting the Space and Flight Museum, Museum of the Native American and the Botanical Gardens. Looking forward to meeting up with the rest of the clan

Alan

Sounds like there's some interesting stuff planned. Have fun!

Also, about the standing and waving arms thing... it must be extremely local because I've never heard of this either. Unless you mean The Wave:

A-ha! A Mexican Wave.... Nope it wasn't that. Everyone just got up randomly waved their hands in the air and started jiggling their bodies about. Maybe it was to clear the flies? Duno? HAHAHA xD

As for what we got upto on Tuesday? Well it all kinda started in a leisurely manner at the space and flight museum. Some of Meet Up Survival Guides were handed out with the badges to those who joined us. We started in the Space section which was fascinating. My favourite bit was the Space Shuttle exhibition. They showed a video of the final launch of Discovery. I never tire of watching that. The violent control explosive force to get it into space is...txantsan!

After seeing the space side of things we launched ourselves over to the flight side of the museum. Some of us took a bit of a breather. Poor old DJ Makto pulled a muscle, but that wasn't going to ruin his whole day. At lunch to clan split up a little with some staying a while, whilst the rest of us took a walk over to the Museum of the Native American.

Just as we were about to enter, our three German aysmukan strolled up - YAY! More MSGs and badges were handed out. After introduction all round, we made our way into the museum which has a txantsan building, and made our way up to the top. We met Raiden and Sarah their as we made our way up to the top floor.

Up there they had like a planetarium type theatre which gave a a good overview of native people and their culture from all over the Americas. Afterwards we gradually worked our way down and the floors. As time was getting a bit tight to visit the Botanical Gardens some of us made our way over there as they had this smelly plant that only flowers once in a blue moon (raiders going to kill me for not know what it is called - hehehe)

We all met up again after that and made our way over to Capitol Hill for a group photo, before heading over to the Natural History Museum. We were only managed to see a small proportion there as it is soooo huuuge! But by now we were all needing some om, yom, yom! So enter stage left DJ Makto, still hobbling along, who sorted out a place for us all to eat together.

We had to wait a while for the restaurant to clear a table for us. The meal itself was an interesting experience in that you got given a meal ticket and then walked upto a meat counter to choose your meat which got wrapped in paper. Then there was a side order stand. With your meal ticket marked up you went back to your table and filled your face - HA! Water was sieved copiously...mostly over the table. It's the first time I've drank out of a jam jar! But it was all very good and filled the spot.

By now we were all warn out and so it was time for some shut eye. Wednesday will be a trip to the zoo. I'm going to make sure I get some DEET on because I got bit by flies multiple times the last time I went!

And that ma ayeylan was Tuesday at AvatarMeet 2013.

Well, time for another update on the gathering of the clans in Washington. So if you are sitting comfortably, then I shall begin.

The concept was to meet at the zoo entrance between 10:30 and 11:00. Well myself and our German tsmukan arrived and we found a bench to wait for the rest of the clan. We eventually go a message saying that they had just started out. So we thought it prudent to get into the action and start exploring the zoo.

Now normally in a zoo you expect to see animals. So we made our way through the rabbit warren of trails. Sloth Bear...nope. Otters....nope. Fish cats...nope...Ooo! There's one! Quick photograph it! Yay! We were beginning to wonder if some of the animals had gone on their summer vacation!

We made our way further into the zoo, past the elephant, gorillas through the small mammal building and towards the invertebrate enclosure. In here there was a bit of an aquarium and a few other animals and inserts. I saw my German Tsmukan exit the building and tried to catch up with them, but by the time I stepped out I could not see them! I waited for a bit. They were probably looking for me. So I went off looking for them...only probably in the opposite direction as I never caught up with them.

So I had a little sit down and thought I would wonder up the main path. However, I ended up meeting the rest of the clan at the bird exhibit. And off we went. This was round two for me, but that was ok as I could video them too. MOWHAHAHA....*cough, cough.

Gradually we worked our way down through the zoo, we did not come across out German aysmukan. But it is hardly surprising as the zoo is so huge! We saw seals, reptiles, pandas, turtles, crocks, spiders, snakes, otters and shed load of other animals. Sarah and Mikko were met later on and we managed to see some red pandas too! 'Eylan Palalulukana joined us too as he had been looking at the big cats.

Now we were running on vapours and in need of a set of spare feet each we made our way to a tacco/macho (?) food place to get something to eat. This was followed by a trip next door to the ice cream parlour. Boy was that nice ice cream. I certainly enjoyed filling my face there!

Thoroughly worn out by with our bellies full, we joined the Metro back to our respective hotels.

Tomorrow we head out into the Pandoran forest for the next part of the Avatar driver training! Consequently we might be off grid, especially with me being on a UK phone and probably out of sight of a Wi-Fi connection. But we will update as soon as we can. Ooo, I've realised I have not posted any piccies. But rest assured that copious photos and video has been taken and will be published. In the meantime here are a couple off my iPhone:
A couple of piccie from the Museum of the Native American:

Feeding time for the blue monkeys at Macho/tacco(?) place:

Well that is all I have so far...

As I mentioned, we may go off grid once we leave Hell's Gate - it's the flux vortex

However, activities planned include campfire clan meals, Na'vi lessons, trip to an unobtainium mine where they have discovered a new mineral called Herculaneum, cosplay for Avatar drivers, viewing of some of the meet ups held this year and also watching Avatar - the film that brought us altogether and started us on this wonderful adeventure.

If we can connect we will. If not sorry for the silence, but you can join us by watching Avatar on Saturday night, wherever you are.

Well, we all had our road trip to Big Meadows. I joined our German aysmukan and loaded up the car with all the bags and set off. The thing that made me laugh was the Ikxeru didn't like the German voice on the Sat-Nav and so it was changed to the American one!

About halfway through the trip we stopped of for some syuve (food). This was in the form of a Subway - they are everywhere! But it seemed far better than frequenting the McDonalds. An ice cream kiosk was spotted and so we just had to drop by - Om, yom, yom!

On the road again and the terrain began to get noticeably hillier. Then in the distance we saw the Blue Ridge Mountains of West Virginia...there's a song there...and headed up the hill. The road began to be banked round the corners. After screeching of the tyres and a rather confused auto gearbox we made it to the Skyline Drive and paid our $15. There was now just a 20 mile ride to big meadows.

A fair amount of altitude was gained as we went along, pausing every now and again to admire the amazing vistas before us. After passing a few cyclists (!) we made it to Kelutral.

There is a variety of accommodation here and I think we are using every type. I opted for a middle of the range lodge, others went for the air conditioned version, whilst some ventured for camping.

After arrival I ventured down to the campsite to see our Avatar couple, Moco Loco and Human No More had arrived and so had Mikko, who was stringing up his hammock. Eventually everyone arrived, including some new faces to the Meet Up. . Mikko handed out the T-Shirts whilst chief food organiser, DJ Makto pulled to syuve together.

With just about everyone arrived a committee was formed to start the fire. We had a dead grass collector, wood keeper, adviser and arsonist... I mean fire starter. WHOOOPH! Ok the fire is going. Hehehe

Cheese burgers and hot dogs all round along with some steamed veggies and some chips (Why do you Americans call them that? They are crisps! Hahaha). Anyway it was all very "om, yom, yom" as the sun gave way to a starry night and the temperature decided to dip too. Well, we were waaaaay up in the mountains!

Much talking took place, but highlight of the evening was when Fiyerwall found a huuuge moth and brought it to the campsite for Raiden to identify. Having identified it he then placed it on his nose whilst it warmed up for its evening frolics. Just wait until you see the pictures - of which many were taken!

Friday will be a trip to the unobtainium mine. It is hoped that we may get to see the new mineral that the RDA scientist have found, called Herculaneum. So until then Eywa ngahu.

We did some cool stuff today! First up was camp breakfast, which required the boiling of water over an open fire...only we had to get the fire going with damp wood! Eventually it did get going and slowwwwly decided to boil. This was so we could have some porridge!

Eventually we made it through breakfast and so we could head on out toooooo.... The Luray Caves. This was an hour's ride out along the Skyline Drive and along another windy road to the caves.

Eventually the whole convey arrive and Mikko rounded us you into a line so we could get the group discount. We just made it with 20 aysmuk! So off we went into the caverns for our hour long guided tour. It was quite interesting and breath taking in parts. Some of it reminded me of the Iknimaya climb! My favourite bit was the pool of water that was so still that it created a perfect reflection of the ceiling.

Eventually we made our we out and some of us had a bit to eat at the local cafe before having a quick look round the toy display. I like the train set, but then I would!

After a stop off at the local Walmart for supplies, ranging from materials for Na'vi consume through to Nutella(!), we headed back for camp. In the afternoon Karyu Pawl joined us and gave us a refresher class 101. This was great as we were all sat on the grass in a big circle and had fun going through the basic phrases again. It was txantsan!

Once our cups had been filled to overflowing with Na'vi it was time for some syuve! Om, yom, yom. Whilst the fire was started supplies were brought down from the lodge cabin. So we had burgers, hot dogs, steamed veggies and best of all - marshmallows dipped in Nutella! We also introduce DJ Makto to the stuff! This poor guy had never had it before. Anyway that was soon corrected in front of everyone as the sun gradually set and so ended another great day at AvatarMeet.

Alan, ma oetsyp tsmukan, irayo for the coverage! as you can See I got here late (as usual ) but I am actually glad because reading all your updates in one go gave me quite a vivid picture! I am trying to, err, photoshop myself into it... so to speak...

So, how does it feel - to be back with your own clan, again? how many have made it this time? I guess there is a list of attendees somewhere...

Herculaneum??? what in the world is this? does it float in the air? err... maybe not. Maybe it uses other rocks for weight-lifting! (thinking of Hercules) (actually I just looked up a dictionary - Herculanium is an ancient Roman city, close to the present day Naples, so maybe the answer lies there...

ah well! Enjoy, aytsmukan si aytsmuke, and waiting for those photos & videos, as always!
Eywa ngahu,

A-ha ma tswal tsmuke, glad you liked the write ups. Yeah, Herculanium is a very strong material

Yesterday was an interesting one in multiple ways as you will find out. All the activities were to take place at the lodge. The first activity Na'vi class 102, which was a follow on from class 102 that was held in Seattle last year. We are most grateful to Karyu Pawl who had put in a lot of work to pull the class together and conducted it is the same enthusiastic and relaxed way as he did last year. (Why weren't my lecturers at uni like him?)

As per last year, we videoed the lesson, which will appear as a set of short video lessons for those who were unable to make it to the meet-up. It will also be a refresher for those who were there and those who want to brush up on their Na'vi. So look out for these in due course.

Following the Na'vi lesson there was free time for everyone, whilst the class room was changed into a cinema. Lunch was a bit damp as the rain poured down, doing a merry dance on the floor.

Gradually people began to drift back to the meeting room as sound checks were made for the cinema set up. We are indebted to Mikko and Peter who provided the techie gear to make it all happen. It all worked a treat...in the end! Hehehe.

To help pass the time, a couple of meet up videos were shown. One from a London mini-meet and the other from EuroAvatar 3. Ikxeru did a wonderful commentary for the EuroAvatar video which also included a Na'vi version! With there still being a little time left those who were present watch The Volume. If you don't know what it is check out you Avatar Bluray and prepare to laugh your socks off!

Eventually, it was time for the screening of Avatar. So with everyone present the play button was pressed the screen went black. But instead of Avatar starting who should appear on screen, but non-other than Jon Landau himself with a message to everyone at AvatarMeet!!! His message to everyone at the meet-up gave an update on progress with Avatar 2, the Pandora Forest project with Disney and new technology development with Weta. Jon's message to us was filmed in their new volume Manhattan studio and you could see a mo-cap artist sitting on the floor in the background.

To round off his wonderful message to us he said that new screening of Avatar would be complete without some food and drink. At which point some goodie bags were brought out for everyone, along with drinks!!

Everyone was taken aback by seeing Jon on the screen with his message to us and the generosity of Lightstorm, who also paid for the room hire for the day too. It is hard to express our irayo and meuia to Jon, Kathy, Kevin and the rest of the Lightstorm team for their kindness and generosity towards all of us.

As the goodie bags were handed out, Paul's husband, John, handed out these wonderful metal and enamel Na'vi 'ivong badges to everyone, which again took everyone by surprise!

The final gifts to hand out were to Paul and John from all of us there. We had all secretly been signing an irayo card for them, which had been beautifully designed by CyanRachel. Unfortunately she was not well enough to attend the meet up, which was very sad only.

So we called Paul and John up to the front and handed them the card and also some books that we thought they would like. So for John, who is a transport enthusiast, there was a book on steam locomotives and for Paul two books relating to Native Americans. One of which was about Native American sign language.

With irayos all round we all settled down again and watched Avatar! Having had our class 102 from Paul we were all listening all the more intently to the Na'vi words in the film.

Post film, having regained our composures we had a good old chin wag and Fiyerwall shared her AvatarMeet scrap book with everyone. Paul gave us some anecdotes from when he was filmed for the Nova videos. Eventually we cleaned up the room before retiring to bed... What an evening!

I guess KALTXI is on Itxeru's txim! in fact it's a T-shirt that he took off cos it's hot (?).

Is this Itxeru? Lot's of feathers, a ponytail & hair shaven on the sides... my guess is 'yes'

Hey, did the moth survive? the one that Fiyerwall found & Raiden put it on his nose...?
