The camping should have been before the meetup, and the main meetup should have been DC or something.

I'm not gonna pull any punches; some of you guys just don't seem to have what it takes for "real camping".

"Real camping" is getting wet, dirty, smelly, and cooking your own food over a fire, while you try to figure out what that crazy bug in your tent is.

It's about being liberated from technology and the luxuries of living in a house or an apartment and really getting back in touch with the natural world, or maybe getting to know a new ecoregion or climate.

That being said, there's nothing wrong with being that way.

The problem is when some people in the group want to stay at the lodge and others want to stay at the camp, because the people who want some "real camping" don't get what they want, because it's most fair to cater to the person/people who want something other than "real camping", such as a lodge and daily showers.

I and several others (I think) wanted more hiking and exploring. I had several dozen "target" species that I wanted to see at Shenandoah before we left, and I only hit a handful of them, because I was limited to one group hike and a few short night hikes.

I talked with Mikko about this on the last night, and he agreed that we should split camping and not-camping and make it clear that there will be no group reservations at any lodges, and that if anyone needs a list of camping equipment that they probably should not go on the camping portion.

Make no mistake, I'm not trying to offend or insult the people who stayed at the lodge; I'm just trying to point out that our tolerances, experiences, interests, and strengths vary wildly amongst our ranks, and as such, we may need to make camping a separate post or pre-meetup event.

@ X.,.Pandora.,.X - shame you couldn't make it. Maybe next time? We all have a year to save up for it

@ Raiden - you're right about camping. When I was in scouts we alway said you haven't really camped until its rain on you. Well we got a bit of that! Camping is about getting back to basic living in an enjoyable and fulfilling way.

I guess not everyone is up for that. I must admit, whilst I love nature I like my creature comforts these days - complete with mouse and chipmunk (as we had in our lodge!). Hehehe. At the end of the day AvatarMeet, and any 'official' Avatar fan meet up, like EuroAvatar has to be for everyone. Consequently it has to accommodate everyone's needs as best they can. As a result there has to be compromise. For me Shenandoah was perfect for this with a whole range of accommodation to suit people needs.

There is nothing stopping those who want to do pure camping and 'getting back to nature' going and organising that. I know some have in the past.

For AvatarMeet, however, it has to be inclusive for everyone at all stages of the event so no one feels excluded. Then we all get to do a little bit of what we enjoy with friends. For many of us, it is the only chance we get to spend some quality time together.

I wonder how I would fair if I went camping now? I've forgotten what it is like to have a mole trying to dig its way up whilst you are trying to sleep! Hahaha.

Yeah, I could tell that I wasn't entirely going to get my way from the first night.

However, I also know about how expensive "meeting spaces" were in DC, and Shenandoah solved that problem nicely, so it only made sense to switch things around and make camping the main event.

I still had a great time (bar the last day/morning...), and it seemed like hosting everything at Shenandoah was the best way to go, so I wouldn't worry that much about it.

Like I said, just switch it to 4 days of camping (no lodges!) and 4 or 5 days of the main event, and I think that's perfect. That way the camping people get their fix, and anybody else who wants to join in is welcome, so long as they are prepared for camping.

I had a great time, so good to see everyone again

I have to agree with Raiden - camping brings too much of a scale. there are people like you who don't mind getting cold and wet, then people who are in the middle, then people who'd rather use the lodge. Nothing wrong with that, of course, but I think camping was a reason the meetup was smaller than last year.

Definitely have a camping trip around the meetup, but keep the core activities based around a hotel, I think.

Kaltxi!

A Big Irayo to Alan, DJ Makto, and everyone else for sharing your experiences and photos from AvatarMeet 2013! I'm so sorry I wasn't able to be there with you all...I was so looking forward to attending the meetup, had everything all planned/packed up and ready to go...then my body decided to rebel against me, so I wasn't feeling well enough to make the trip to the meetup in the end.

As badly as I wanted to be there, if I had tried to get there and take part in the meetup, it wouldn't have been enjoyable given how weak I was feeling, and I couldn't be selfish and only think of myself -- I had to think of the rest of the clan and I didn't want to hinder anyone else's enjoyment of the meetup; I didn't want to be the one unwell clanmember there slowing everyone else down. So I decided not to even attempt it (smartly in the end), and stayed at home so I could get well again. Now I have a whole year to try to make sure I'm as fit and healthy as I can be so I can make it to AvatarMeet 2014...and I am determined to be there next year!

Due to my absence, I did really miss seeing my fellow clanmates again (Mikko, Sarah, Fiyerwall, Raiden, Alan, HNM, Moco Loco, DJ Makto, Marki, etc.) and getting to be in the presence of our great Karyu Pawl of course! I do want to add another Big Irayo to Jon Landau and the Lightstorm crew for their VERY generous support of the meetup/their contributions to making the Avatar screening even more awesome! Yay! Just wish I could've been there for that.

Well, sorry it took me this long to post here re: AvatarMeet 2013, but in closing I want to say I'm glad everyone who attended the meetup had a great time, that the meetup was successful (how could it not be?), and hopefully I will be seeing you all at AvatarMeet 2014! Kiyevame ulte Eywa ngahu.

Awww...as i have said elsewhere, we really missed you at AvatarMeet ma tsmuke . These things are sent to try us. Although you weren't with us in body, your were with us in spirit.

For folks who weren't aware, at the meet up we gave Karyu Pawl and John and couple of gifts from us and also a card that was signed by all of us. That card was designed by CyanRachel. So it was doubly sad she was not able to make it and present it to them.

Anyway, next time ma CyanRachel... .

Eywa ngahu ma tsmuke,

Alan
