This Frank Herbert book has a few parallels with Avatar (mostly names)

In this thread:

The most amazing film that never was made

you can read about a filmproject in the 1970:s that would probably have been a groundbreaking film version of Dune and which perhaps would have altered the development of SF fimmaking.

Well Dune and Avatar both deal with outcasts who become a member of a rebellous tribe and loves a woman that is not of their planet, both with the tribes fight against greedy people who have a substance that is precious. Even the taming of a certain animal is a good point.

James Cameron is a fan of the Dune novels.

They are kind of fanfiction stories.

Who thinks Dune is the original Dances with Wolves/Pocahontas/Lawrence of Arabia in space story? i mean teh book was influenced by world history such as the fall of rome, Caligula/Caesar, Lawrence of Arabia and even the story of Pocahontas since the Freman are a mix of Middle-Easterns and Cherokee people while the Harkonnens are settlers and Paul is like John Smith with Chanbi being like Pocahontas.

You could look at it that way. I see Dune as more of a political saga rather than a romance, while I do think the romance is still pretty effective. In fact, all major elements of any story are depicted. Action, adventure, drama, romance, horror, comedy, satire, art, deception, redemption, wisdom, religion, power, good vs. evil, thrill, etc. etc. etc. are all within. But the overall frame of the story seems politically based.

Don't forget the old technology vs. wisdom theme as i do know it's a political saga in space and cab e compared to Tolkein's novels in some way.

You gotta admit that the Freman are similar to the Native-Americans and the Arabs as the tribes are a cross between those two races and are wise to nature similar to how the Native-Americans are.

I read it at the end of last year for the first time and I'll say that while an incredibly amazing book, I found it so different to what I would normally read. Herbert really pushed the boat out and created something truly original.

As for the other books, I started Dune Messiah and found it not as good. It seemed to lack the same magic of the first book in that it seemed an unnecessary continuation of a finished story. I couldn't get into it and never finished it >.>
