We are Facing the Greatest Threat to Humanity: Only Fundamental Change Can Save Us | Water | AlterNet

Quite simply, human-centered governance systems are not working and we need new economic, development and environmental policies.
An awesome article I just read on Alternet. Everything it says is absolutely true. We will face our destruction if we continue with our headstrong, profit-motivated means of expansion/development. How is it acceptable that the very elements of life have become commodities to be traded on the market? Clean water? Clean air? Why should our very capability to remain alive be something that is traded on, and dictated by the market? Living creatures, in all forms, shouldn't have to be economically viable to be allowed to exist. This reeks of THX 1138. And some of these new BS markets that are trying to emerge. Carbon trading? Pollution trading? How about instead of using our energy to simply trying to capitalize on our means of destruction, we use our energy to actually remedy them for good.

"Man, I see in fight club the strongest and smartest men who've ever lived. I see all this potential, and I see squandering. God damn it, an entire generation pumping gas, waiting tables; slaves with white collars. Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy **** we don't need. We're the middle children of history, man. No purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our Great War's a spiritual war... our Great Depression is our lives. We've all been raised on television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars. But we won't. And we're slowly learning that fact. And we're very, very pissed off." - Tyler Durden

Very true... I doubt there's any hope for humanity though, the best thing that could happen is that they don't take everything else with them when they go extinct.

Great article Tsyal Makto. A lot of bad things to read about in there, but also a few good things too.

I had never heard of this before, and I cannot believe it is actually happening:

Another false solution is the move to turn water into private property, which can then be hoarded, bought and sold on the open market. The latest proposals are for a water pollution market, similar to carbon markets, where companies and countries will buy and sell the right to pollute water. With this kind of privatization comes a loss of public oversight to manage and protect watersheds. Commodifying water renders an earth-centred vision for watersheds and ecosystems unattainable.
I mean, how more ridiculous can you get.

It seems that they just playing monopoly with lives. The water pollution rights means that one can pollute a stream and kill all life in it, if one just pays money for it. How weird is not that? Soon they maybe sell and buy the right to blow up people too?!

I might have missed this in the article, but if a company or other entity wants to pay to pollute, who do they give the money to?

You can't exactly deliver a suitcase of $$$ to Mother Nature, much less expect that she'll accept it.

The world. Unless you plan on a revolution, get used to it.
And may I say, Tsyal Makto, that I have the perfect song for your quote, and everyday people in society:
