Default 50 years warning

Heard just a good analogy on TV. If a big asteroid or comet was heading towars Earth and was due to hit us 50 years from now we would for sure take all measures possible to avoid such a catastrophe. Politicians, scientists, ordinary people, we would all try to come up with solutions to be able to deflect or destroy the meteorite. All societes and countries would gear their economy towards supporting technology that could help in diverting the threat.

But when it comes to global warming, pollution and other urgent environmental problems that threatens to destroy the Earth, perhaps also in the next 50 years, we see not such kind of joint effort. Instead we go on as usual with a lot of desructive activities. And we are always bitching and we indulge ourselves in meaningless conflicts. We let big corporations and also states deplete the Earth of its natural resources, we destroy the biodiversity in our world and we continue to harbour weapons that could wipe us out.
We do not want to see the threat of destruction, we just lean back in our armchairs and let things happen.

Must a comet be aimed at us for us to react and start to cooperate in order to survive?

People just...really do NOT SEE.
Some folks need to wake up and understand we're killing our mother.

Well, maybe all the space agencies around the world should say that an asteroid with a magnetic-like attraction to warming, overpolluted planets is heading our way.

HotG is right, there really are a lot of blind Sky People out there. There is one major difference between the two situations. Mega-corporations wouldn't profit from denying the existence of an asteroid. The public wouldn't be bombarded with denialist propaganda like today, so maybe more people would be inclined to believe in it, and demand that something be done. Same with our elected officials. Today they're bribed by lobbyists to deny the existence of global warming to protect the profit margins of the people who are lining their pockets. In an asteroid situation corporations would probably be bribing politicians to find ways to deal with the problem rather than deny it, because in that situation their asses would be on the line. When it comes to global warming only the lives of the "small people" (wonderful choice of words from Carl-Henric Svanberg of BP) would be on the line, so for that they could care less.

So that's what it comes down to, corporations and their *****s in legislations around the world. They'll only decide to act finally when their asses are on the line. If it's only the common masses that are in danger, they couldn't give any less of a damn. They've all got their millions and billions, they don't need us anymore.

Oh, I think quite a few of them would. Insurance companies, for one.

Something tells me they'd stop selling policies because IF humanity somehow survived, they'd have a LOT to pay out - quite the opposite of profiting

As for in general, it's sad really... but then again, it's a question of a more obvious threat over a less obvious one.

That's exactly why they would profit - or at least prevent profit losses - by denying the existence of the asteroid.

A disruption in the supply of light beer and blue jeans, probably. People don't often react until whatever the problem is effects them personally, sadly.

Though for a problem like climate change, it wouldn't be a lack of beer and jeans that will plague people...think more like disease pandemics, super storms, cities underwater, crop dieoffs. You know, the usual...

Well, imagine an alien race would come to this planet. They would extract the resources, use humans as a work force in exchange for some nice flat screen TVs, hundreds of channels, a small concrete box to live in and artificially flavoured food/water. Do you think people would not cook up plans to shed that opression? Why do they not do this now?

The asteroid comparison lacks some validity as stated above, as it would affect different people, but I think even if there would be such a discovery, some scientists would say it will hit, others will say it will miss and there will be a huge bunch of conspiracy and anti-conspiracy people flocking to that topic, claiming government conspiracies and new world order conspiracies and so on. Then they may cacluate who is hit and who is not (unless it is a big one that threatens all). Then people will start to sell private asteroid bunkers with food and fuel for a decade. Then there will be a discussion if it should be a political decision or if private corporations should be given the money and resources to avert the catastrophe. And so on...

Bottom line is, if it is not 100% proven, people will always concentrate much more on the loopholes than on the major evidence, out of denial or mistrust. Many aspects of the current topics on climate change, peak oil, ecosystem destruction and so on are based on science and science is almost never 100% sure. There are always sceptics, denyers and opponents. That is the whole point of science, that it is always possible to adjust to new evidence. But obviously this is by some mistaken as an excuse not to act on the present day overwhelming evidence. If there are 95% of scientists daying that it is happening and that it is anthropogenic, then people will just swarm to the 5% if it allows them to stay in their bubble.

EDIT: Check out my latest new thread in the On the weird psychology of humans facing peak oil (speech mp3) thread - this speech really explains well why people are NOT acting.
