Default Eco and Voluntourism

While at the book store tonight, saw a couple of books on the topic that looked interesting! {Decided to wait to purchase books till next weekend when they are on sale for 25% off }

In the meantime, posting two websites that correspond to the books:

Rough Guide to Clean Breaks
- itís the result of over a decade of travel, researching holidays that have less of an impact on the environment and genuinely give something back to the destination, through conservation and/or supporting local economies.

Picked up my books today, plus one more "Volunteer" by Lonely Planet. Its more about what you need to know and how to research before doing "volunteering"

Aaah, I meant to post here earlier, only to say that this is something I really want to do someday. Travel around and do some good work along the way. I still need to read that whole radio segment though.

Be careful. This article is worth a read:

The idea that it's a new kind of colonialism was also mentioned. Plus, I certainly don't want to treat any people as if they were creatures on a safari. I've already seen a few advertisements put out by a student travel agency, and I don't like what they say with regards to that.

At the same time, I've figured that there's a ton I could do around where I live, so why do I want to leave the country so bad? Anyways, if I do decided to do some kind of volunteering abroad I'll look into it very thoroughly.

Good points! And yes the Volunteer Book especially discusses the issue particularly well! It also covers things like culture shock, expectations, home sickness, etc. It emphasises the attitude one needs to go with should be that of a learner and reciprocity!
