Default "war on wolves" with UAV's?

Western states' new war on wolves - latimes.com
Quote:
The new war on wolves
As soon as federal protection ended, the slaughter began.
...
As of Wednesday, the Idaho Department of Fish and Game reported that 154 of its estimated 750 wolves had been "harvested" this year.
...
In early November, Sen. Max Baucus, a Montana Democrat, made his own political contribution. Thrilled at the testing of a drone aircraft manufactured in Montana, Baucus declared: "Our troops rely on this type of technology every day, and there is an enormous future potential in border security, agriculture and wildlife and predator management." A manufacturer's representative claimed his company's drone "can tell the difference between a wolf and a coyote." Pilotless drone aircraft used by the CIA and the Air Force to target and kill alleged terrorists now appear to be real options to track and kill "enemy" wolves.

Now there is a creative way to waste resources if I've ever seen one.

War on wolves... I mean really? How can anyone even be serious about something like that? Maybe I'd understand if the wolves were eating children and whatnot on a regular basis, but what's the primary motive behind all this?

You just said it. There is of course the issue of doing too much, Wisconsin did that, but we've balanced out or wolf populations to a nice medium. Not enough to cause trouble for farmers, but enough to maintain a good population to keep deer down through most of the year.

Drones?

I bet someone with decent marksmanship could take a drone down without too much trouble...

Call of Duty doesn't quite reflect real life.

This is an opinion article, so treat it with a certain degree of skepticism. That said, if the article is true, then it's a sad product of the American government and the power of Congressional lobbyists. I really hope the wolves won't be hunted to extinction. But again, take this article with a grain of salt.

And a decent engineer would have cameras on those drones, constantly recording...

Balaclava, hood and you're good to go (Plus the footage could be destroyed once the UAV had been shot down?) I'll bet those things ain't cheap either

But seriously what the hell are these people thinking? A 'war on wolves', because the wolves are such a threat to America living out their lives in the wilderness?

Actually, they stream footage to the operator.

As for the (lack of) context, there's a lack of context. Seems to me that nobody's going to be pleased either way though...

Would be interesting to get a hand on one of these - it might sell for quite a bit if it really is originally military equipment

Just kidding.

I'm surprised we got this far into this thread and nobody made a joke about killing wolves from a helicopter.
