O.O I bet there are more out there...But in smaller scale.

It's pretty shocking when you think about how easily these things build up.

well I never knew that the pacific ocean was such a dump lol it just strikes me that there is more plastic accumulating there than sand

The "Great Pacific Garbage Patch" is kind of overstated.

It's not a floating island of waste, it's an area where the ratio of plastic particles to seawater is greatly increased. This can mean particles smaller than a grain of sand, or plastic milk jugs floating at the top.

That doesn't make it okay, and small particles are actually much worse than large pieces (they can absorb certain kinds of hydrophobic pollutants, such as some pesticides), but the "patch" isn't a swirling maelstrom of soda pop bottles.

That beach is pretty awful though.

I've always wondered just how this thing can be cleaned up, especially with all those small particles...

Horrible images:
http://coastalcare.org/2009/11/plastic-pollution/

PBS - The Voyage of the Odyssey - Track the Voyage - ATLANTIC OCEAN
"Moore and his colleagues currently predict a 10-fold increase in plastic in the ocean by 2010 bringing the ratio of 60 pounds of surface plastic to every one pound of zooplankton in the North Pacific gyre. "

60:1 - thats crazy - think eating 60 hamburgers and only one of them is not plastic. Thats possibly how ocean life may feel.

I don't see how someone couldn't profit by just collecting as much of it as possible and using it as raw materials to make things out of.

Raiden:
a) it is waste. A mixture of all kinds of plastic and other materials. To separate this would be as tough as to separate household waste that was not separated for recycling. The only thing that one can make out of such a mixture without investing a lot of manual labor for separation is this black building material - or to burn it for energy, just like any other mixed household plastic waste.
b) to collect this is a huge challenge. The plastic in the ocean is widely spread, you'd need a fleet of ships to collect it all and in the collection probably you would kill many animals as well. These ships cost money and need fuel. If it washes ashore someplace, of course you can collect it, and this is done in many places to keep the beaches clean for tourism. In these cases that trash goes the same way as any other household waste - either to be separated and recycled, burned or in a landfill.

Ouch, my optimism.

In my opinion, it's better to try and find a solution to problems instead of standing back and shaking your head about why possible solutions wouldn't work.

I think the solution is not that hard to find: Stop putting plastic into the oceans ASAP - then what plastic is there can be removed or will disintegrate with time.
To get the stuff out, I guess there are no economic solutions - it will have to be done basically with effort. Maybe fishing fleets in the area would have to be told to keep any plastics they collect in their nets and bring them to land and processed like any other waste.
