Default Ecuadorians Outraged with President's Decision

News from Equador:

Quote:
President Rafael Correa's decision to terminate the historic Yasuní-ITT initiative, an innovative plan to preserve the world's most biodiverse rainforest in the Yasuní National Park, hundreds of Ecuadorians have taken to the streets to protest and are preparing a national referendum to reverse this decision.

The ground-breaking initiative launched in 2007 would keep some 920 million barrels of oil underneath the park permanently in the ground in exchange for financial contributions from the international community. The plan would also keep an estimated 410 million tons of CO2 – the major greenhouse gas driving climate change – from reaching the atmosphere.

But Correa, citing the proposal's lack of contributions, signed a decree to liquidate the UNDP trust fund, and declared drilling in the national interest, a designation that sets in motion final approval from Congress to pursue drilling.

Lack of contributions seems to be why - doesn't seem to be Ecuador's fault.

Then again, uninformed pitchforking mobs are depressingly common everywhere.

Nice move to externalize blame. As if it would not also be in the countries and its own peoples best interest to keep a healthy environment and not sell that off in exchange for a few badly paid pipeline and refinery jobs, which is what ususally is all that is left to the people of an area that is opened up for oil extraction by corporations.
Still, the international community could have shown more support - they all talk and talk and set up plans like REDD supposedly with the goal of spending money to mitigate climate change, but of course the idea is not really to reduce oil output and leave anything in the ground but to give people a better feeling by pretending that the CO2 produced by burning all the oil is "mitigated" by planting some trees somewhere. We could not have the oil supply peak and stop econocic growth of course - that is primary for this culture

"Humans are storytellers. These stories then can become our reality. Only when we loose ourselves in the stories they have the power to control us. Our culture got lost in the wrong story, a story of death and defeat, of opression and control, of separation and competition. We need a new story!"
