So I'm guessing this is the place for both works and discussion of works, so... hey.

I'm working on something and I've got a few concepts I've been throwing around. I haven't fully fleshed it out, but I'd like to see what people's interest in it is, if that makes any sense. Like... to see whether it's got merit.

The most basic explanation is that I came up with an original clan (the clan itself has been fleshed out) that is canon-compliant. I want to write a fan-fiction that explores culture and Pandora as a whole in a more in-depth fashion than was seen in the movie, based off of what's seen along with a few canon-compliant head-canons that I've taken Occam's Razor to thoroughly. In essence, this means that you won't get any crazy mentions of bathing in tapirus blood at the full moon because maybe it'll cause rains to come next month; instead, you'll get thought out things that make sense in the context of Pandora as we've seen it thus far, as experienced by the clan, and more specifically, from the perspective of some of its members.

A more in-depth explanation is the theory that there's at least six clans, according to the claim in-movie that fourteen clans answered Jake's call, that weren't accounted for. I've come up with a ~97 member clan (a small clan already, it was pretty badly hurt by its losses in the war) called Tem'ewll. As far as my bad Na'vi is, I've been told it should mean something along the lines of the Two Plants clan, a hint to their herbalism focus. If not, please tell me so that I can remedy it. Of course, every clan is self-sufficient to some degree, so I've assigned some of them to pursuits other than hunting or herbalism to keep them from starving because they can't cook and walking around in the nude and sleeping in the dirt for lack of clothing and bedding.

I've fully fleshed out the genealogy of the Tem'ewll clan; that is to say, I've got complete family trees for each family back to their great-grandparents in most cases, except for those in which the great-grandparents (or, even, more recent generations) originated in other clans; even in those cases, I've noted their names for the sake of completeness. I've also noted the names of the family members for those that have newly arrived from another clan due to a mateship or any other reason. I probably won't ever reveal all that information, because goodness me, that would be daunting to read no matter how it's broken up. Regardless-- I have, essentially, a fully fleshed out clan with knowledge of every member, their personalities, their occupations, their families, their interpersonal relationships, and their way of life as a clan. (I also have made notes of who is able to mate with whom on a familial basis, who is eligible, and who is seeking to remain single, even if just for now.)

I've also made note of quite a few shared (and due to regional differences, unique) customs and traditions, as well as created some of the clan's unique stories.

Four of the more significant characters would be Syamä (te Ze Txela'ite), the Tsahik and Olo'eyktan, Arihi (te Paikea Acala'ite), one of the Lorekeepers, Tewnga (te Welo Roney'ite), one of the cooks, and So (te Rotsa Wi'itan), one of the warriors. I'm unsure as to whether any avatar drivers would be included. Of course an avatar driver would be an excellent crutch on which to lean on for exposition's sake, but I don't know if I want to use that crutch. In fact, there are several other routes to take with this, and I have some put in place; but I think I want to avoid using someone's ignorance for this purpose completely.

I have yet to define the exact plot for the story, but I have a feeling it will have something to do with the dynamics between Tem'ewll and another clan as well as the dynamics between the Tsahik and the rest of the clan's members... which is an extremely vague concept and barely worth mentioning. Regardless, I wanted to know if anyone would be interested in hearing more about (or actually reading) it if I was to come up with more for/write this fan-fiction, based on the information currently available.

Additionally, while all conversation would take place in the Na'vi language, all of the words written for the dialogue would be in English and using Sky People equivalents to things known to the Na'vi by other words. For instance, if making reference to a thanator, Na'vi person A would call it a thanator and Na'vi person B wouldn't take notice of the term used because to each other, they are using the term Palulukan. After all, not everyone knows the Na'vi words. Granted, not everyone knows the sky people words either, but it seems to me a little odd to say "Oh man did you hear about the fwampop that crossed the road", because you're bouncing back and forth from one language to another, even if the word 'thanator' doesn't really exist (yet) in modern day English.

Names of people, however, are (possibly obviously) going to be an exception, both because some names have no meaning and because it would be a little odd to read a story about 'Beautiful One' and 'Supplanter South Meadow', no? ; ]

Anyway, if you've made it this far, thank you for reading about my little idea! If you're interested, please let me know so that I will feel more motivated to get around to writing. I'm also happy to receive constructive criticism and suggestions. : ]

sounds like some great worldbuilding there and I'd be interested in hearing more about it. Though I would say thats a bit too many characters (assuming they are all fully developed) and its nice to see ideas that don't focus around the war or Jake/Neytiri.

Only thing I'd say is that you should remember that the story is what is going to interest people, not the setting. So focus on the story when your writing. A good way of doing this is to break it down into a collection of short stories that show off the relationship between the characters that can be used as a spring board for a larger story.

That's good advice-- thank you! I'm aware of the unwieldy amount of characters I've made, but as I poorly mentioned, I'm not intending to introduce all of them, or all of their names. I'm just a very thorough sort of person when it comes to things like this... so that if I need another character, I'm not just poofing one into existence that may not make sense later. I also find it makes it easier to describe macro reactions to things... it prevents things like, 'the entire clan gasped!!11!!' and instead provides a varied response, such as 'some of the clan members clucked their tongues loudly in disapproval, while others looked on with more reserved expressions.' By knowing the makeup of the clan, I know the spirit of it. : ]

Thank you as well for your advice on the short story collection. That's definitely a good way to solidify some things I've been debating with myself about it-- I'll be getting to work on it shortly. With any luck this will be worth having posted about! : ]

I do think it a good way to get started, I've seen a lot of people (myself included) plan out a massive story line with lots and lots of characters but run out of steam setting thing up and never get to the meat of the story.

You see it all the time in fanfic with people doing AU retellings of the movie but running out of steam after 10k words before things have gone differently because they are simply redoing the opening schemes the same.

Mmm. Well, I certainly won't be 'redoing' the story! No, this is going to be an original work, as original as any work can be that is, from start to finish. I'm probably going to have at least references to interactions between the Omatikaya and Tem'ewll at least once, there's... well, it wouldn't make sense not to the way I'm setting things up, and also with the war having happened recently; but I'd like to keep it vague, kind of a 'oh, the Tsahik spoke with the Omatikaya recently, they are celebrating an increase in prey as of late' rumor mill sort of thing.

I've gotten a short story done! I'm thinking of another as I type. : ]
