Here is a video:
Edith Widder: The weird, wonderful world of bioluminescence | Video on TED.com

it is about bioluminescence on earth, mentions Avatar and has biolumie creatures that if touched send waves of bioluminescence through their bodies. Sadly mostly rather coarse pictures or vids but stll amazing. And a bit sad, goven that I posted a week ago the news about the worlds oceans dying ...

Here are some pics of where I was recently - Point Reyes. It's a designated national seashore, but in order to get to the shore you have to hike through forest first!

I happened to be there when it was raining. At first I didn't like the idea of being rained on indefinitely, but after a while I realized that I was getting to see a side of the forest that I would not have otherwise seen. The mists, the fresh scents, and the banana slugs on the ground all made me glad to be there at that time. It did clear up eventually though, and the sun made it seem like a completely different place. I've got a newfound appreciation for trekking in soaking-wet weather.

Oh, and the beach itself is very pretty too.

thank you for the beautiful pics - the fern & moss one looks almost like on Pandora I like misty & rainy forests, they do have something special - they remind me of the scene when Neytiri drinks from a purple leaf & smiles at the tree, with "Becoming One..." track on the background...

here are some more mists:

Very nice photos
I wish I could go somewhere like that, but it's not really possible for me right now.

I have dreams about big forests like that a lot, but I haven't really ever been to one

Great pics, Empty Glass. One looks just like part of my back yard; I'm in another part of the Pacific Northwest. Yes, it is beautiful in the rain (just as well, since there is so much of it).

Wow - is that a real photo of the sky? Or is it somehow a merge of two. 'Cause to get all those stars on a photo you need a long exposure and a camera that compensates for the movement, right? But then, in Nepal there certainly is no light pollution... Beautiful stars!

When I Heard the Learn'd Astronomer
by Walt Whitman

When I heard the learned astronomer,
When the proofs, the figures, were ranged in columns before me,
When I was shown the charts and diagrams, to add, divide, and
measure them
When I sitting heard the astronomer where he lectured with much
applause in the lecture-room,
How soon unaccountable I became tired and sick,
Till rising and gliding out I wander'd off by myself,
In the mystical moist night-air, and from time to time,
Look'd up in perfect silence at the stars.

Looks real - with a long exposure like that, you need somewhere with no ambient light.

Hmm - it cannot be made with long exposure time. Because then the stars would be stripes (or circles). So it would have to have been made with some ultra-sensitive film or digital sensor. But I think then the quality would not be so. I think it is a beautiful composition of two pictures, but certainly it reflects what the human eye would see but that the camera cannot capture. Like the moon-rainbow I once saw - I think no camera I could have access to would have caught that one...
