Default The skyscraper

And man finally stoop up on the top. Blind to his actions' consequences, he couldn't see further away from where he wanted to look: progress. At the time he had been building his large skyscraper, he had been filling the Earth's surface with his trash, polluting air and water with his smoke and waste, making his fellow men work endlessly and miserably. Now, a few people were allowed to stand at the top of the building where they could contemplate their creation -from the highest place in the planet.

Yes, it hadn't been a costless work. They had erased cultures and civilizations from the map, banned traditions and silenced opposition to its masterwork; so every man could understand the nature of it and could put its arms to its service.

"It's finally finished" one of them said

And then, the elevator stopped at the last plant. Seven man and seven women, dressed in their best clothes, appeared as the doors opened. Hardly did they put their feet on the floor, when in a reflex movement their arms ran to its faces to cover their eyes.

"Oh my..."

They saw nothing. The clouds of smog and acid rain were so thick that there was not a beam of light that could get through them. And if they could, all they could have seen is a desert of black dust.

They were on the top, yet there had harmed too much.

But who was then to see what they had done? Who would judge them?

--

What lack of common sense and personal interests make to a natural mechanism, inherent to human nature, called progress.

Misery.

So, where are we going with all this progress? Who is the actual favored one by its benefits?

The old workers were free then to leave the skyscraper; although the hell in the inside was nothing compared to the hell they let be outside. Most of the people who left perished in the desert; most of people in the building died trying to prevent its fall, by unorganized reparations. The highest floors, home of the rich ones, had been sacked and their inhabitants had no other option but run away if they wanted to save their lives. Surviving was the challenge then. When food began to be a scarce good, murder became something usual.

The building eventually collapsed.

Twice as slow as the humans damaged Nature, the natural processes began to take again their previous routine. The first light beams broke through the smog; as the water cycle resumed again. The water was slowly turning crystal clear. And color green began to take over, little by little, over the desert's surface.

The remaining people were few; but they wouldn't bite the feeding hand again.

And as slowly as Nature gotten over its disease, human race began to understand what the word balance meant.

I know, it could have been better, but I need some sleep. Perhaps I'm editing this later (perhaps not)...

You should watch Koyaanisqatsi, it's basically about the same topic.

There are many people trying to prevent our downfall, but I am afraid that we will fail in these efforts. Sh*t man, in 20 years we may have to wear gas masks...

There's a whole lot of truth to that statement- I don't really want to see the world burn in my lifetime.

I hope people- Ahem, or should I say, 'sheep'?- realize what's gone wrong and work hard to fix it before it's too late.

Id say pain would be progress, but this doesn't apply when you have pain for no apparent reason (sitting on a couch for too long ex.). The world will change if something extremely catastrophic hits the people responsible within their powerful thrones of control. We could rise up and slay them but what good would that do other than create Anarchy? Plus their is no system that would promote freedom plus the oppression of extreme greed in one social society. We are screwed but hopeful for our current time.

Although I don't advise it, but I think the creed of an assassin would create the necessary fear and message to those with power who abuse their responsibilities in the wrong fashion. Its only a question of mortality to the populous if this were the case. Could the people bare the burden of the murder of a corrupt figurehead? Only doing this action when all other options are exhausted of course (diplomacy, advice, warnings, dangers, repeated mistakes, etc.). The world would be better off if the pure wicked were wiped from the earth.
