Default Are there people who secretly like Avatar?

Interesting point...

<Mune> To be honest, I bet the case with a lot of Avatar haters is that they experienced major emotional changes and their friends said "Well that movie sucked" so they buried it.

I definitely think so... which makes me sad

I think that's true.

So many people cannot show out what some things are able to do to them, because it would make them vunerable to any hate against it. This is the case for me too. I'm not showing off my Avatar obsession in real life because it matters to me SO MUCH that I don't want to give people an easy way to insult me.

Though, I have started to reveal it lately, because I don't want to hide my feelings.. like one of my friends does all the time. When our eyes meet, he usually makes a face, he's afraid to show even his real facial expressions...

Idk maybe. Not me lol, the first day I saw Avatar in theatres I told all my friends about it then we all went to see it together. Then me and my boyfriend told my parents about Avatar so I went to go see it with my parents.

Well peer pressure is something that affects pretty much everything, so one wouldn't go terribly wrong by assuming something like that. After all, we all want to belong and be accepted as we are, and if that doesn't work, we pretend to be something that is more acceptable.

That's a behavior that I can relate to, seeing as I do it myself, but usually I just avoid looking people in the eyes. It's said to be rude not to look a person in the eyes when you are talking to them, but I find it rather uncomfortable.

We all wear masks all the time anyways, so does it really make any difference if we show our feelings or not? For example, my mask has always been the pretense of ignorance or random goofiness, and it has worked pretty well so far in terms of avoiding awkward situations. So why should we act otherwise when it would only bring more conflict and unnecessary tension?

I bet there are tons of people in this world who "see" after they watch Avatar but just don't like to admit it.

It's a shame. What is there to be embarrassed about?

People who "hate" on Avatar, usually do it over the internet. And they usually do it just to cause trouble.

I'm sure that's happened to some people. A lot of people, I think, are too wrapped up in their own issues and their lives to really get emotionally involved in the movie. So they just thought it was a "good movie." To be quite honest, that could have been me. Except certain circumstances in my life led me to get a lot more involved in the movie and care a whole lot more than I probably would have even a few months before. I'd say it came out at just the right time for me!
Sorry, that kinda got off track. Just thought I'd mention it.

I know... I used to hide it to people IRL... just mentioning that I liked it, bur a while back, I just stopped caring. I really don't care if people know, because it's who I really am.

Too many people seek acceptance, they are scared of doing anything different or unique. Ironically, the people they usually seek acceptance form usually feel the same way too, and wish they could, simply because nobody is naturally the same.

I know from people IRL this isn't always true
What I wonder though, is do THEY secretly wish they could admit they like it too but just dislike it because they don't want to be 'different'?

Are they actual "haters", or just didn't like the movie?

Because I beleive people who say they just didn't like it.

Yes, I most definitely think there are people who keep their fandom a secret. I posted a topic on this a while ago. I thought (and still think) that my best friend was a closet Avatarian. He keeps saying things like "I can see why you watched this as much as you have" and things like that. I have also walked in on him watching Avatar a few times and he turned it off about 3 minutes after I arrived, every time.

When we first went to see it he said it was one of the best films he had ever seen. He then came another 2 times in the cinema and now he's watching it at home too.

He knows about my love for Avatar (to a degree. He doesn't know about this place though) and maybe he's trying to make subtle hints to let his fandom be known as well. I'm not entirely sure though...

I think there will be people who actually like the movie, or at least think it is OK, but come to hate it because of its success.

That happened to me with Titanic. I quited liked Titanic. I didn't love it, but I thought it was a decnt movie and worth watching. But I found it difficult to accept that it was the highest grossing movie and found myself ready to criticise it.

The same goes for the Twighlight series. After seeing them win som many awards on MTV, I hate the movies without even seeing them. I know it is unfair, and one day I may watch them just to see if they are any good. But i am sure others see Avatar the same way.

I consider AVATAR Shakespearean in comparison with Twilight...

There is a certain group of people who hate Avatar because they don't think it is what the general public make it out to be. They don't understand why it has been such a huge success around the world, so they hate on it. They criticize those who love it so much.

I was in a similar situation when seeing The Dark Knight. It was a huge box office success and everyone seemed to love the movie. I had extremely high expectations. Those expectations were not met, which made me like the movie less, though I still enjoyed the movie very much. I just expected it to be something I'd watch over and over again like Avatar.

If only all the people who secretly love Avatar could all come forward and say it!

However, I must admit I am also one of those who hides his fandom. Not completely hiding it though - if someone asks me "Hey what do you think of Avatar" I'll say with honesty that I love it, and if it's a particularly close friend I'll possibly say that it would be on a 'favorite movie list' of mine. However, I would be very reserved regarding saying just how affecting the movie has been on me. I have not revealed that level of appreciation to anyone, except all you wonderful people. I guess I am afraid that certain friends of mine will dislike me if their dislike of the movie is tied to their political beliefs, whether they be right- of left-wing. I'd be easily hurt - or just very pissed off for a couple of days.

Ideally, I would like to say that if someone hates on you for liking Avatar...well, that's their problem, not yours. None of us need such a negative attitude thrown our way, it's unhealthy for everyone.
