There are several similarities - not in the movies themselves, but in how the fanbase is treated.

Twilight raised huge attention - Avatar raised huge attention.
Twilight has a fan base, which the "outer world" sees as fanatical, and much of the time, looks down to. Same with Avatar.

I have never read Twilight myself, and I have not seen the movies either - but I know that it is not right for us to look down at Twilight fans. Remember - we are always complaining of how people do not "See" the message of Avatar, we are saddened that people do not respect our fandom.

And it's EXACTLY the same thing with Twilight. You might not personally like the movie, and you may not see any message - but that's what many people think of Avatar too!

I do not think I will ever see a message behind Twilight - but for the people who do, I won't take away that joy from them. That's what respecting fanbases is all about.

I haven't read the books but I watched the first movie.

I didn't hate the movie, it was cool, I won't go buy it or rent it but it was cool.

And go post Eltu, that is true, we should respect the other fanbase even though we don't 'get' there movie the way we do Avatar.

My thoughts exactly. When I have the time I'll try reading one of the books just to get an idea of what the series is like and so I can understand it more. If it turns out I still don't "get it"...well, I don't see the point of paying attention to something if all I can come up with is negative energy.

Perhaps... but twilight doesn't really have a message. Or any content, or originality in characters, or story

I'd suggest reading this:
How Twilight Works - The Oatmeal

I'd say, it's just disliking something transfers to the fans who like it, I've experienced it from both sides with other films, books, games, etc.

The entire message is sexual abstination, which I find heartwarming.

Avatar had "2d characters and predictable story."

Twilight characters weren't even that, and calling that collection of words a "story" makes Shakespeare roll over in his grave.
Part of me died, trying to even read the first book.

Eltu has spoken truth again

Avatar has given me a huge outlook at Twilight fans... before I'd make fun of them pretty bad too, then seeing how people treat me with Avatar, it made me think about those people, now I treat them like i would want to be treated

I guess.

I still dislike Twilight for taking vampires from batlike, shapeshifting demons and turning into sparkly, angsty teenagers.

At least there's not a movie called Blue People Suck being made

But I wouldn't be suprised if there's an Avatar bit in Vampires Suck.

Zai forget the crap you see in movie vampires! Not all movies feature vampires who shapeshift, not all have fangs but sharp as razors teeth instead or shark teeth, not all burn in the sunlight but some can be weakened to turn back into ordinary humans while some can walk freely as they can sleep anytime they want, some come from outer space instead of the grave, and some don't all drink blood but suck out energy/youth/lifeforce/souls instead like Psychic-vampires do.

Sparkling is just the creation of a horny Mormon housewife's teenage girl shower nozzle mastubation fantasy that she just made up.

Do Navi's sparkle in the sunlight too?

...Like how much of what Interview With the Vampire offered was pretty much an erotica-writer Catholic-turned-atheist-turned-Catholic-turned-anti-Christianity feminist's gothic backroom orgy-fest conception that she just made up.

We can play word games all day; won't change the popularity of the books. Just like with Anne Rice's novels. And not all the fans of the Twilight series are idiot preteens either, just like not all fans of Avatar are greenie eco-terrorists who want to kill the world.

You go Eltu! Philosophize those unbelievers!

In reference to the question:

"Who in their right mind compares Avatar to Twilight?"

Someone not in their right mind.
While I'll agree they have similarities, they are very different themes and genres.

Eltu, the books are marketed to a certain, specific demographic. Teenage girls, a demographic that is quite large at this time. Being popular with 1 single group like that does not make something good. Avatar has appeal for all sorts of people, but Twilight is designed to be exactly what they want, except for, you know, a decent author writing it.
