Thumbs down Intermission after love scene thoughts (CE DVD)

As you may know (those of you who own a copy of the Avatar Collector's Edition DVD) the film stops right after the love scene and you have to change the disc to play the rest of the movie.

What are your thoughts on this? Personally I hate how the movie is divided up into two discs like that. Right after watching such a beautiful scene and then having to get up and change the discs kinda weirdens the experience. After all it is supposed to be an experience, an experience that I hope to stay stationary during throughout ALL three hours...

If anything, the versions should be in their full length on each disc...rather than divided across the two discs...

Well, I only watch the bluray, so I didn't even know about this. That does seem rather aggravating, though.

Yep, it's awful.

I'm sure they had some reason for doing it, but it totally caught me off guard at first and is very very inconvenient.

Frankly, that is the one scene where I don't want to be reminded where I really am....

The reason is almost certainly that they ran out of space on the disc. At maximum data rate (read maximum quality) a DVD can only hold two hours of video. More than that, and you start trading quality for duration. When you find yourself trading too much quality, it's time for a second disc. Even the non-extended theatrical version required significant compromises in order to fit on a single DVD. Even the Blu-ray suffers from this, relatively speaking (they couldn't encode the video at the maximum rate allowed because it wouldn't have fit on a Blu-ray). Avatar is just a long movie.

Well I have the... bluray so I don't have that problem. The reason why they choose this scene is because either the limit happened to be reach right then or sometime in the next scene and they didn't want to interrupted a scene.

IIRC, Avatar is too long to fit onto a DVD at the standard compression rate... I should have guessed this but it didn't occur to me as I haven't watched it on DVD.
I can see how that would be annoying... That scene is sad enough as it is

Personally, If I was 20th C Fox, I wouldve added an extra disc, put each edition of the movie on its own disc and the special features on the last totaling four discs instead of three. Adding an extra disc wouldve cost them next to nothing also considering how theyve made a bagillion dollars on the movie, it wouldve been nice if they gave back to the fans, but as always its greed.

I only needed the dvds for my pc previously, but with my new blu ray drive, I wont have to deal with them anymore Although, I do understand this problem

Even though it is mainly a technical problem (limitation of disk space), as has already been discussed, that particular point in the plot also marks a large first act being completed with a happy ending. Jake has finally succeeded in becoming part of the clan and the woman he has fallen in love with has now mated for life with him (although he still is unsure about that, marked by his "What the hell are you doing, Jake?" line).

For those of us who know what's going to happen next (all of us, basically ), that intermission can be a nuisance. But imagine that you're seeing the movie for the first time - you now have a moment to wonder, what might happen next, before the big second act starts with the not-so-happy morning after, when RDA robodozers crush the Tree of Voices. From a POV of dramatic composition, that moment was perfect to put an intermission in. In theater plays, that is done as well - and if Avatar had been a stage play, the intermission between Act I and Act II would have been placed just there.

Just my two bare footprints on this.

Wiggling bare toes,

I find it annoying as anything. I also grew up with laser discs (the prerunners to DVDs - about the size of a record), so I AM used to getting up in the middle to change the disc over. But it's annoying, and it breaks the 'spell', so to speak.

On the other hand, if you are watching canon taking notes, it's a nice little enforced break *g*. But mostly, I find it really annoying.

Yeah, I certainly don't like having to change discs either. However, what bugs me a little more is the background music and background picture on the DVD menus when you have to start the movie again. It doesn't leave any blank space in the mind for reflection upon the end of the first disc. I'm thinking about this in relation to the extended versions of the Lord of the Rings films; when you change the discs for those you just see a black screen with instructions to load the next disc and it's silent. That would have been preferable for the Avatar CE in my opinion.

However, I do think that there was no better place to cut the movie in half. I've usually thought of Avatar as almost two movies in one - the first one dealing with Jake's exploration of Pandora, resolved by his being accepted as a member of that world; the second involving the fight to keep Jake's new home free from exploitation and mercenary cruelty.

I find it annoying as well. The interruption knocks out my feeling of being captured by the world of Pandora. That's why I really want to have the Blu-Ray version.

In terms of timing, it is a point where really, the whole mood of the film changes in a way. Sadly though, I'm already crying before then, but for different reasons.

I definitely do not like it. The first time I watched my SE DVD I was like WTF when I got catapulted back to the reality that is earth. Even after seeing Avatar 13 times (yeah...only 13 ), it's still an amazing experience for me. All the feelings are still there..they'll never go away. I do not like having my Avatar experience interrupted.
