Default In the months before the sequel

When I saw Avatar for the first time, I don't think I'd ever even seen a trailer for it. I think I might have heard it mentioned a few times, but didn't know anything about the plot, or genre, or anything else.

Needless to say, this made me even more amazed once I saw it.

But looking back, the trailer essentially gave away the entire plot. I'm sure if you read interviews and saw pictures and other things as well you could have pieced every major part of the movie together before having ever actually seen it.

So has anyone thought about what they're going to do when advertisements and trailers and the like start coming out for the sequels? In an ideal world I would walk into the movie with no previous knowledge but I feel like that's going to be impossible. I guess I'm just afraid that we're more or less going to have everything figured out beforehand. And while of course that's only part of the picture, I feel like this would lessen the experience of it all.

Has anyone else thought about this?

I hadn't thought about this to be honest. I never payed much attention to Avatar before I saw it (despite the odd trailer on TV). Now that I've been blown away by Avatar 1, I think I'd avoid sequel trailers and interviews like the plague so, as you said, I can see sequels knowing nothing and maximize the impact of my first viewing.

I'm torn. I had never seen the trailers for it, yet I was invited to the movie by some friends who later cancelled, but I was determined to go anyways, so my sister came along because she thought going to movies alone was weird (seriously? It's relaxing). I had no idea what Avatar was about, and I had no idea why I refused to NOT go see it, but boy did that one hit me quite hard.

Avatar 2 would definitely be better without seeing the trailer at all, although I have no idea how I'm going to pull that one off. Sure, on these forums it's simple enough if people don't put spoilers in thread titles, but I go to plenty of movies as well, and trailers they show there in plenty. I guarantee I'll accidentally catch one at some point.

I will try to avoid as many trailers and discussions about the 2nd Avatar as I can. It would just ruin the surprise and a lot of the awe...

I only saw the trailer once, wasn't paying a lot of attention really, but I knew enough basic details to decide I had to see Avatar beforehand
I think I'll try and avoid the trailer for Avatar 2, although I don't mind other info.

I've thought about this, and have even considered taking a 4-6 month sabbatical from ToS leading up to the movie's release, then avoiding every other Avatar-related site and news article like the plague. But I don't think I'd like to do that, and I'd break down and come back online anyway. (We could perhaps create a sister site called tree-of-spoilers.com, perhaps )

I've also thought about seeing the movie at the very hour of its release wherever I am so as to avoid overhearing it being discussed elsewhere. But that might require camping out in front of a theater, given the lines I saw when Avatar was still playing!

I agree that the trailer may spoil the events for the sequel. But think about it, you will have to go for months knowing that you could see what it will be like. I don't think I will be able to restrain myself.

Ooooor we could just label everything that could deal with spoilers as SPOILER, and/or keep all musing about spoilers to the sequel section?

Pretty much what everyone else said.

But I had only heard of Avatar once before going to see it and that was in a restaurant months before release and it was people talking about how much it was costing. And when I went to see Sherlock Holmes with some friends I saw it on the list and wanted to go see it but we didn't.

But yeah, I will avoid any news or info about the sequel if possible.

'twas a joke I was trying to make. I hope that when the time comes, everyone will have the sense to visibly label spoilers as such.

I think it depends on the person, really. One person may see the trailer and then see the film, and still be blown away by it. And another person may see the trailer and be bummed out because they know exactly what's going to happen.
Though, I have a feeling we won't be shown as much of the plot in the trailer for the sequel as Avatar.

I agree with BotanicalMedley. You guys are gonna laugh but when I first saw a trailer for AVATAR and it was done by JC my first thought, and I am not kidding here I was like "OMG JC doing animated movie's now?!" I was so diappointed and said to myself AND I quote: " There is no way I am going to see that F****** movie, what the HELL is JC thinking after he did such a great movie like TITANIC?"

HAHAHA Now look at me, a full blown Avatar fanatic and junkie. I saw the trailers a couple of times and really had no idea what it was going to be about but I was COMPLETELY and UTTERLY blown away when I saw it for the first in the theater in REAL 3D. And I haven't been the same person ever since!

But anyways, back to the question, I think no matter how much I would try and NOT watch trailers for the sequels, I don't think I could make it. For me, trailers really don't give a lot of information. Perhaps I try and be a pessimist on purpose about movie trailers until I can see it for myself and can make my own judgement call and opinion. I mean sure there are some movies that you can figure out in the plot in 30 seconds in watching the trailers but then others you just have no clue what to expect, just like AVATAR!

Anyways, great question and something to think about for sure!

I think an interesting kind of preview would be a sort of wildlife documentary style where they pick an animal and show it as they would on some wildlife show all the while not revealing any plot. You'd still know its Avatar just not what was going to happen.

They could get David Attenborough or something for the voice

haha I seem to remember they did something a bit like that for the first Toy Story 3 trailer (i could be thinking of another film though.) It was basically just the characters messing about, and had nothing to do with the actual plot. I dunno if thats the kind of thing you were getting at, but it could actually work
