Default Mind blown

I was reading about the Apollo guidance computer on Wikipedia, and eventually ended up reading about Apollo 1. You know, the one that caught fire on a routine test? Yeah, that one.

Anyway, towards the end, there was this paragraph about a prank that they had done. In that paragraph was something I never expected to find:

Then I lol'ed.

I do run Children of Eywa, and because of un-resolvable host issues, it hasn't been up for quite some time. I apologize for any inconvenience.

Nice, but it's a shame that Grissom perished before he could see that word become more frequently known.

I saw another thing on that page that made me chuckle, albeit darkly: he took a lemon from a tree by his house and hung it on the command/service module simulator to express frustration with the unplanned design changes of the spacecraft.

Hmm, "lemon"...it's typically used to describe a car that turns out to be defective and a really bad purchase, though I think it can also be used to describe other manufactured products that work really poorly. Such as spacecraft that come with incomplete engineering changes.

(Or in the case of Avatar - glitchy link-bed units, like the ones Grace points out upon entering the shack. )

The Apollo program is the greatest accomplishment of manned spaceflight to date. For humans, mere upright apes to walk on the surface of another world... it's such an awesome and incredible thing that it just boggles the mind. Never really cared for the Shuttle. It was a terrible mistake to cut back the Apollo Applications Program.

Here are some Apollo fan essentials. All of these are awesome and bear repeated reading/watching:

Books:
Full Moon
A Man on the Moon

TV series:
From the Earth to the Moon
Moon Machines
When We left Earth

Films:
Apollo 13
In the Shadow of the Moon

The book Apollo 13 is also a very good read. The technology in the Apollo program is very fascinating, and I admire the engineers who made it all possible.

Definitely. What really annoys me is how people have actually been to the moon... and not even been back, when there should be people on Mars by now, or even on their way out of the solar system in the near future

That was my childhood dream, to be the first man on Mars......'twas a dream not to be realized, methinks. I suspect I'll be too old and out of peak physical condition when that finally happens.

And just to add to the list we've got going, anyone who's interested in the Apollo program should visit the National Air & Space Museum in Washington, DC. Columbia - the CSM flown during Apollo 11 - is on display amongst other amazing things.

there is one more use for lemons: "if life gives you lemons... get tequila and salt and call me over!"

I'd like to at some point in my life... I also want to visit the shuttles - for all their problems, weaknesses and stagnation of the space program, there is just something about them...
