Default IMAX withdrawal

I caught the final IMAX showing of Avatar last Thursday, March 25 at the very nice film IMAX at the Indiana State Museum IMAX Theater in Indianapolis. That was a 115 mile 2+ hour drive one-way. I made that drive two other times as well the previous weeks. This followed my nearest digital IMAX dropping it for Alice in Wonderland. I saw it 9 times there, which was a 50 mile, 1 hour drive each way.

I've been watching the IMAX site every day for new theaters to appear. The latest count is 10 in the United States, which is actually an increase. However, the closest one is in Iowa, a 450 mile, 8 hour drive one-way. I know this because I have already calculated directions to it from my house...

I have a job and things to do, I cannot just drop everything and drive 16 hours roundtrip, plus stay for at least a few showings. And yet, I find myself very close to doing so. I really should never have seen it in film IMAX the first time. Absolutely nothing else will do now... I haven't seen the movie in 10 days now and am completely lost. I don't know what to do...

Damn you James Cameron, for making such a life smashing film....

I feel for you... Oel ngati kameie. Nothing will beat Avatar in IMAX 3-D. My last time in the IMAX 3-D theater room was one I will never forget. I hope everyones right when they say that Avatar will be brought back into theaters later on... I pray that it'll be in IMAX 3-D again

That's just it... it is STILL in IMAX 3D, it just would take a bit of a trip to get to. It would almost be easier if it was truly gone. The fact that a little 7 hour drive would get me in to see it twice a day is a little too much pain to bear. There is a show running right this moment in at least 2 IMAX theaters, one in Sandy, Utah and one in Monterey, California. Hundreds of people watching right this moment...

You're lucky... I can't see it in IMAX at all, and I only have twice anyway

Well, the drive is getting shorter. It's returning to IMAX in Grand Rapids, Michigan this Friday, so that's only about a 5 hour drive There are a few other new IMAX locations returning as well, so maybe I can get that distance down even more. There are 4 new ones in the US and one in Australia (LG IMAX in Sydney) bringing it back this week.

WOW respect to the dedicated Avifans

There was I thinking 12 miles was a commitment LOL! Don't think it's screening in UK atm, my last 'local' venue dropped it just over a week ago: prior to that I was kind of thinking...''It's all cool, it's still showing''... then wham GONE!

I was a bit traumatised....''what ever shall I do now, where can I get my next bioluminescence fix

Actually, the UK still has 5 IMAX screens showing it, which is a rather large number when you consider that the US only has 13, Canada has 1, Australia has 1, and that is it worldwide, at least according to the IMAX site.

Where in Canada is it playing?

I live in Canada and wasn't aware it was playing here. Not anywhere near where I live at least.

Interesting, well Sudbury is, according to Google Maps 4 Hours and 43 minutes away.

I've been to Sudbury before but that was a day trip while I was up at my cottage a few years ago.

You'd think a major city like Toronto would have an IMAX theatre playing Avatar. I would be able to drive into Toronto and see it.... There are a few IMAX theatres in Toronto, but none showing Avatar. Ontario Place is even the first place in the world to have a permanent IMAX theatre....

Fail.

IMAX is getting a massive surge this Friday, as the number of US IMAX theaters jumps from 11 to 34. It appears that the AMC theater chain is bringing it back for at least a late showing on most of their IMAX screens. This 11PM or so slot was formerly held by Alice in Wonderland.

The people have spoken I guess btw I'm jealous of all you members that live by a IMAX that's showing it...

Drive out to Mississauga, the Coliseum. They have 3 IMAX screens there I think, and it's less than 30 minutes further than Tdot.

Avatar is no longer there in 3D, 2D, or IMAX at the moment but I'm hoping it will return after the DVD/BlueRay release!
