James Cameron confirmed that there will be a re-release in theaters with 6 minutes of extra footage.

I imagine it will be worldwide, so Canada & the US won't be left out.

I thought that there was going to be more than 6 minutes, but I still can't wait for the bonus footage, another reason to go see it in theaters again. Can't wait.

I think Avatar was very close to the actual maximum length of an IMAX film so that could be it.

zongtseng is our resident IMAX expert, but I believe you're right. Real IMAX theatres use real film (LieMAX <=> digital) -- so if they add too much, they'll have to take Avatar out of the true IMAX theatres. (Either that, or they'll leave a forklift in the projection rooms and add in an intermission... )

The maximum length of the IMAX film reel is 179 minutes, or 2 hours 59 minutes. That leaves them with about 14 minutes to spare, if they used every last inch of space. There's a reason the credits are so compacted into those massive paragraphs of names. The traditional ending credit format would eat up far too much of the IMAX reel time.

As for the re-release, even the 6 minutes is fine. Honestly, as long as it will put Avatar back into the first-run theaters worldwide, I don't even care if there's any new footage.

Avatar cannot be experienced the same way at home as at the theater.
