Default Rushed times!

"Hey Jack would you send me that in a parcel when you're in Alabama?"
"Sure, it'll be in your mailbox by the next week"
"Alright Jack, see you when you're back then"

May, 2010
"Hey Jack would you send me that in a parcel when you're in Alabama?"
"Sure, it'll be in your mailbox by the next week"
"Next week!? You're kidding me! I can't wait that long!"
"..."

We can't wait.

For nothing.

Things were slower time ago, you know. If you wanted something from outside your country you had to wait for at least three weeks or two months perhaps. Now you can have products from China and Italy from the shop around the corner. You had to wait for a letter from your penfriend when you both were separated by a large distance: now we've got the Internet to connect people in seconds.

At work you had several weeks to get the difficult work done (no PCs and no quick means of transport), now it has to be a matter of days, even hours. And if you ordered anything outside your town, you had to wait several days until it was at the local shops: now you've got anything you want here, at the moment.

We want everything and we want it now.

And we later rant about stress...

Oh well, call it the price of progress.

Its not really a price to pay if you consider the amount of "stress" there would be if suddenly our cars stopped running, our PCs crashed and our planes and boats disappeared miraculously.

Most people, including me, are wired to technology. Im a bit of a perfectionist, the faster the better. If I can get to my friends house in three seconds instead of twenty minutes, that takes a whole lot of STRESS off my hands getting there.

Just because life was simpler 'back then' doesnt mean it was less stressful, it just depends on how you define it. 40 years ago my Dad worked 9 hours a day to get money I would find on the floor these days. Things are a lot easier now and definitely less stressful.

Sure people live life 'in the fastlane' and true, it can be stressful at times but, none of them would even think about living like people did a century back.

So really it's okay to want what you want when you want it, because we can.

Stress is not the same as hard work.

Hard work means you put much effort to earn your pay.
Stress means you have to work in the least time to earn your pay.

So perhaps work has been made easier, but it demands much more effort now to get it done before the deadlines.

you are right, dreaming, when you say that things are lot easier now than 40 years ago. So people would be less stressed if they would have the same needs as 40 years ago. But people tend to want more and more (or the media suggest to them that they have to have more and more) and most of these things are useless for a normal well-off life. So people are stressed because of these unnecessary things that they want.

I was glad that we had the volcanic ash cloud that stopped European air traffic for a whole week (even though I was a "victim" of that), because people realized that life went on. Nobody starved during this time, no company has gone bankrupt because of this, nobody was fired because he couldn't go to a meeting. Just a few flowers from Kenya that were supposed to be sold in our European cities wilted in the African airports.
And life was a little bit less stressed these days in many offices, agencies, companies.

I think what this world really needs is to slow down...
