Serving your country.

I was just wandering if anyone else on ToS was planning on joining the military. If so then what branch unit etc.....

(please dont pretend to have military know-how if you have gotten your misinformation from any modern warfare game.)

I have been trying to join the Royal Military College of Canada for the past 2 years. Hoping this time things will work out. I've always wanted to be a fighter pilot and so the idea of joining the military has been with me for a long time.

Not been part of the armed services, but I've spent over 10 years working on bases. As far as which branch it's all about what you are looking for. My view is some what slanted because I was mostly working for the Navy or the Marine Corps. I had the most respect for the Marines.

So the question is what are you looking for?

I am still toying with the idea actually. Not to long ago I was dead set on it, was going to finish school and then join as an officer into either the Air Force or the Marines (yes I know very different XD) However, now I am debating if I want to attempt something in music or something along the lines of traveling and such.

If I was to join I would definitely attempt to go in as a pilot. Obvious answer to what I would fly is jets though honestly I would not be upset with whatever I got as long as I was up in the sky! If that didnt work out I would probably try special forces after a bit, not because I want to say Im in blah blah but because its a great way to see what I am made of, how far I can go, and be the biggest benefit to my country as possible.

Being a pilot is a pretty tough thing to get. First to be a fighter pilot you must have the attitude. They test for it. For a cargo plane you don't need that. Starting with a degree in physics or engineering is a good asset as well. Even with that it's no easy feat to get into the pilot seat of a military aircraft.

Definitely true! Last year when I was dead set on it I was talking to a few family friends and got on base with a friend that is in the reserve flying F-16s to talk.

My grandfather flew cargo in the AF back in the day then went into commercial. He is one of those people that would live in the air if he could :D back when he had started HS he was working at a small airport and instead of getting paid would trade for flying time LOL. I love planes and I love a challenge though :)

I will be joining the US Army in a few months

are you joining anytime soon?

TheIknimaya 09-30-2010 09:58 AM

The thought has crossed my mind several times. I've always been fascinated by the military/army. When I was little I used to play with little plastic army men, tanks etc. (I still have it all somewhere, it was so much fun).:P

Anyway, I don't think it's something I'll do. My mom has suggested a few times that I join the army, but it probably won't happen.

Yes, it is very hard. Here in Canada there is lots of competition due to the low number of jobs open for pilots. Last year when I applied there was 30 positions open for pilots through the ROTP program and over a thousand applicants. I'm hoping this year I can make it though.

Hope you are in killer shape as well. I used to hang with some special forces types when I was back in my twenties. There were some of the only guys I knew who were willing to do 30 miles days in the Sierras that had several thousand feet of elevation gain. I used to call it fun. I would collapse at the end of the death march day and those guys never missed the opportunity to tease me about being a wimpy civilian.

There recently was a show on discovery I think that was about special forces initial training phase. It was a cool show. A lot of guys just couldn't take the physical and mental abuse that they put them through.

It is an admirable goal and there is no shame if you don't make it. You just have to keep at it until you make it.
