End of the world: 4-5 billion years from now when the sun reaches the end of it's life.

Pfft.

Everyone knows the world will end once Coca-Cola company goes down. Nobody will have anything to drink... the world's ecosystem will collapse... it will be CHAOS! CHAOS I TELL YOU!

...or it might just be me.

It depends on how you define "the end of the world".

If the end of the world means the collapse of civilization (i.e. there is a post apocalyptic era of humanity) then I would say a polar shift. Every few hundred thousand years, the North and South magnetic poles of the Earth switch. This is a time of intense geological activity (i.e. more volcano/ super volcano eruptions, massive earthquakes, and tidal waves). We are currently overdue for the next polar shift.

If the end of the world means the end of the human race, then I would say a super pathogen that wipes out humanity engineered by mad humans. Such a virus would spread through the air and be resistant to all antibiotics. Any humans that do manage to survive in remote locations (such as the artic) would not last long without mass society to support them in such a hostile environment.

If the end of the world means that actual physical destruction of the Earth, then its the sun going super nova in a few billion years. Either that or the collision between the Andromeda and Milky Way galaxies in 4.5 billion years (the Earth may survive this, it depends on how close another star comes to ours). Whichever event occurs first.

If the end or the world means the end of all sanity then
Spoiler: *Warning* Terrifying Event

The world won't end until the sun explodes, however humanities "current state" will end with false revolutions protesting the horrible environmental state (famine, air quality, etc) possibly ending with a few thermonuclear devices.

12 Monkeys much?

I think quite simply, the world will end when it's meant to end.

The world itself: probably the eventual death of our sun in a few billion years.
All life on it, a long time before that, thanks to humans probably.

In the words of Robert Frost:

Quote:
Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I've tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.

Fallout 3

...'nuff said. Humanity's end will come when someone finally gets too trigger-happy with the nuclear weapons.
