Default I thought Christmas was 25th December

And not 25th November.

Seriously, the consumer orgy starts earlier and earlier each year.

EDIT: ****, I cannot delete this.

Yeah, I didn't know about Black Friday :I

Id think it comes from the list people need to make. I think the magic of Christmas comes from two things: Surprise and expectation. It isn't entirely centered around gifts, it seems that way because there really isn't anything a person can give on such short notice. A gift seems to fill that hole. A good explanation for why people do it earlier than their last year might be from work. People get paid great sums of money around the holiday season, like UPS or Fedex here in Wisconsin (you get a 2x raise than the average employee this season), and shopping earlier is just a safety net so the magic of Christmas can be preserved. Around Thanksgiving, we gather with our families to be with eachother. Christmas, we gather together to show our appreciation towards eachother, in whatever way seems appropriate to the person in question.

Hey, if it's cheap, people will buy it. Humans are an opportunistic race.

We celebrate on the 24th and 25th.

Black Friday... I don't even know why it's called Black Friday. Since it comes after Thanksgiving, it's the first day after one of the main American holidays that comes before Christmas, which signals off the first day (for most) of Christmas shopping. Thus, most (if not all) businesses around the country dramatically lower their prices to compete with each other because everyone goes out to shop. The traffic is hell on Black Friday.

I haven't actually thought it was that bad this year, the only real exception I've noticed was the lights in the town centre but those are always really early.

The early holiday season is done so that retailers can stretch out the amount of time people are ready to shop to keep numbers lower. If they started carrying Christmas items two weeks before the holiday, they'd be swamped by people getting their Christmas shopping done.

IMO seeing people put up christmas lights and stuff early just gets me in the mood for Christmas even more Gives me something to look forward to, knowing that its so close and everyone is getting in the mood!
Thats a horrifying thought D: Would be just as bad as Black Friday or worse >.<

The first Christmas ad I saw this year was on the 29th of October, two days before Halloween.

Lemme just say, I'm DAMN glad my corporate overlords start getting people out shopping a month early. It saves us so much of a headache...

It seemed to start really early this year in Liverpool...I first saw christmas decorations in shops early october, and my first christmas advert. It was basically just a downward spiral from there. I don't mind the preparations that need to be made for christmas, and I understand that enough time needs to be given for the shopping period. I just wish it wasn't shoved in my face everywhere I go.

My sister works in Cotswolds (which is basically an outdoor gear shop)...it hasn't even hit december and she says she's ready to throttle everyone xD
I feel sorry for people who work in retail during the holiday season.
