Default Wikileaks

Who is following the current situation with Wikileaks? This is a great moment for the world, not just in the fight against censorship but in making the world a more open place

A website that hosts leaked documents, some of them extremely interesting, and one of the most important websites in the fight against censorship.

https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikiped...wiki/Wikileaks

Recently they leaked a huge database of diplomatic messages: https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikiped...ic_cables_leak , which have been revealing some very interesting happenings and views around the world.
Other than that, another large recent one is the leak of a lot of Afghanistan was related documents https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikiped...documents_leak , and before that, they released the email database that showed that some climate-related research data had been fabricated or exaggerated.

At the moment, Wikileaks is under a large DDoS attack where many people have suspected US government involvement, and there have been attempts to steal their domain names (it is accessible at WikiLeaks and there are numerous mirrors of the actual data around ).

A few of the recent points released can be seen here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-11858990

My father works on this. And I am of his opinion: private data should remain private, public data should remain public. Not the other way around.

By public data, it means all movements and relationships a government and country maintain with the rest and with its own citizens; this means also all movements the politicians, diplomats and other people make while they are in working hours.

It all should remain transparent and accessible for everyone. The exception is made, of course, when there is risk involved.

But lately the rule is being made out of the exception, with no particular reason.

Or at least, no other than business that needs to be covered.

I agree with Zenit. The government should be fairly open, yet certain things should definitely remain censored. Does the public really need to know about every single comment diplomats make? There are also clear cases where revealing secrets puts lives at risk.

The problem is easy to define, impossible to solve. It arises when state security (legitimate) is used to cover mere embarrassment (not legitimate). I have no idea how to ensure the two are separated, as there is no way (that I know of) to have an exact fix on "releasing this will/will not produce measurable, verifiable risk" with anything close to statistically relevant accuracy.

These cables were pretty much just gossip. Nothing that confidential was released. There's not that much risk. The only reason the politicians are making such a big deal is because they are trying to cover their own asses from humiliation. The American people have every right to see what is in these documents.

"One man's transparency is another's humiliation." - Gerry Adams.

This isn't putting anyone's life at risk. If someone wanted someone else dead bad enough, they'd get information about them somehow, with or without Wikileaks.

Releasing the Pentagon Papers made Daniel Ellsberg a hero, but Cablegate made Julain Assange a villian. Wow, how times have changed...

Apparently they are going to be exposing the banks next. Stickin' it to the bastards on Wall Street, I can't wait. This is probably also why half their *****s in the media are calling for Assange's assassination.

'Tis a great day for freedom of information. *sniff* I love the smell of freshly aired dirty laundry.

Just on the news that Norway was secretly doing a deal with USA about buying their fighting jets when they had already promised Sweden to buy their JAS's planes. The Swedish sellers feels utterly fooled and Norways government denies any of the accusations against them.

- Wikileaks.

I wonder where this is going...

Well, I'm happy there is more freedom of information, but with all this secure, government information they're gathering... well, World War III seems more of a likely prospect.

Whatever may happen; it was going to happen anyway: it's not a matter of how you hide what you did, but exactly what you have done.

That's would happen anyway, regardless of leaked information or not. Wikileaks just makes it less of a surprise for the masses when it actually does happen.

I know WW3 will happen eventually. Tensions rise gradually all the time. Revealing private government information to the world though, seems to me like it's accelerating that process.

And I don't think anyone wants another world war.

Nothing that we learned through the leaks are things that people with the power to create world war don't already know. Might as well we learn the truth so we're not caught off guard when the SHTF. The only reason the media is having such a tizzy is because they are trying to protect their own interests.

Interesting...

Is the Crackdown on Wikileaks and Threats of Julian Assange's Arrest Exactly What He Was Planning? | Media and Culture | AlterNet

I must say, if this is true, then this is even better than the leaks themselves. Pure genius.
