Default The rule of mediocrity

Because things aren't that bad to do anything against them: we are not in Nazi Germany, we are not in some mad totalitarian system neither in a repressive and oppressive place where we can't speak or act freely.

Or perhaps because life's good -shut up. Because one is alright in this place, what one sees is good: heating in winter and air conditioning in summer, constant food supply, free entertainment,... I just don't want get in any trouble or mess with anyone so nobody messes with me either.

Because you won't throw all of that to the dustbin to get anything else, will you?

That is the rule of mediocrity: conform, after all it's not that bad -right?

The problem is that eventually you don't realize you have a problem.
Eventually, you can't see beyond your own little world.
Even if you do, you prefer to ignore that to be happy.

Problems you believe can't fix are better hid.

Go on vacation to Peru and ignore the boys sleeping next to your hotel.
Avoid or don't take seriously anything that may affect your lifestyle.
Forget the rest have trouble to deal with and focus on yours only.
Indulge yourself. Buy more.
Take Prozac or alcohol.
Sleep.

Oh, what a pessimist.

Who was this directed to? It's kind of hard to respond when it's as cryptic as that was.

The majority of people do only see five feet in front of them, but a lot of people can't help others because they can't even help themselves. I guess it all depends on what situation your in. If you have extra money donate it, if you don't then try and keep yourself alive.

Either way people need to see more than whats directly surrounding them.

Entertainment and basic life essentials like food aren't available to everyone yet people who have it take it for granted..
I think it's always better to wake up to what's happening around you even if it is conflicting or unpleasant.Unfortunately the majority of people don't seem to want to experiance anything outside their microcosm.

"Without pain, without sacrifice, we would have nothing."

And that is the problem. Things come much easier to people in this day and age, and simply from a survival standpoint it is easier to just knuckle-down to the institution giving them to you than it is to go without, even if it would be in the name of a just fight. That's why revolutionary changes start so slow, in the beginning only a few people are willing to take the chance to go without to pursue their cause.

In short, people are soft, and it takes the few with constancy to get sh*t done.

And with that said I agree that this also tends to blind people. It's so easy for, say, any American to go down on a Big Mac without even an inkling of a synapse about the starving people in their own country, let alone in impovrished regions of the world. Not to mention how much environmental damage is incurred to make that burger.

God damn it, an entire generation pumping gas, waiting tables; slaves with white collars. Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy **** we don't need. We're the middle children of history, man. No purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our Great War's a spiritual war... our Great Depression is our lives. We've all been raised on television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars. But we won't. And we're slowly learning that fact. And we're very, very pissed off." - Tyler Durden

Sadly, this isn't the case. Granted, in the worst of times there are people who will sacrifice and show their love by helping others but many people fall back on being soft, even after war and suffering. People easily forget how hard life is when it becomes so soft to them. I think that what Zenit is getting at is the general apathy that is in society. Most people have nothing to live for and stand up for. Sure, there are those who will fight for their families, their faith, to a degree their way of life but many people do not. They sit by while their rights are taken away from them. Its as if everyone is in a stupor, a sleep. Even if a tragedy happens, for a time people might be more wary, more alert but then they will fall back to sleep. The U.S. has done this since 9/11. Must it take more death for people to see?

It is in the crisis of life that a man or woman's true character is not only revealed but tested. Many of us don't know how we would react in a dire situation weather natural or man made. So many of our fellow citizens where we live are like sheep. They just follow whatever the trend is. Many of them do not see. It seems that most are content with being mediocre and that is sad.

Most of our todays world is controlled by that. The only reason i see this could be removed is if all is crashed down in a big bang. Thats a rule of our world, nothing is changed at least a bit when its not exploding. And even if something goes to hell, after a while people repeat the same mistakes again.

Seen from that point, the chance of escape or hope is not big. The sad truth is that only when everything is forced under control and broken away by force there seems to be a bit "change" - but we also have seen what hapened when people have too much power.

So.. Will there ever an escape? I fear this will only happen when humanity finally dies out.

Well, it would be a good dream, but as long as there are so many different views and conflicts there will never be a change. Humans should finally stop always considering other people/countries as enemies.

There is so much hate and greed, if that could be removed and really 100% shown humanity and understanding of things.. well this would be then something completly different.

So sad it sounds, what this universe needs is a "god".. or allmighty person which all people can believe in, a force to the right way. since people follow always "higher orders" - but that is also just a dream

I have to agree with you there Tsmukan, unfortunately human nature places us as social creatures bent on following others for direction..
I can't really come up with a reason why we as a species look up to alpha leaders or certain groups as being the rulemakers and directors beyond gaining advice from lessons learned which have benefited the leaders at somepoint in their life and avoid making mistakes that they have made.I have a quote that I keep reflecting upon when I think about this..

"The people know not what they want, it's why they turn to men like us. We come into the world world kicking and screaming. Violent and unstable it is what we are, we cannot help ourselves." King Richard-Assassins Creed

If God solved all our problems for us, what's the point of us even being alive?
