Pretty crazy. But I don't agree with when he says "The Earth is the only world known so far to harbor life". It's the only one THAT WE KNOW has life. Obviously if there is another planet out there with intelligent life, Earth isn't the only one known, since this other planet knows about it's existance. And WOW at the hand on 3:22. It doesn't even look real.

What does this have to do with Christmas though?

That is a profound video and certainly puts things into perspective. It never fails that the greatest acts of evil, in retrospect, seem completely worthless and minuscule. But at the same time, the simplest acts of kindness mean the universe.

This is a video I like. It is about space and the universe, but also tells us that all of this vastness means nothing for us here if we cannot get along as a species. Get along with each other and get along with the planet, the ecology, all nonhumans of this world that is a living system on that pale dot as it can be seen on these images from the outer solar system.

Nice video... there is so much more in the universe... but Earth isn't the only inhabitable planet. It's certainly a single, tiny, insignificant place which has also had all of human history and I agree about humans who think they're something special despite being so insignificant (total perspective vortex anyone? ), but that doesn't mean it is the only life, and that is what makes me happy

Yeah - the video left that open - about the possibility of other planets and such. But of course it sort of warned that maybe this is the only one and we should take care.

total perspective vortex indeed - at times I think I am staring at it a lot this year

It's most definitely the only one we have, and we must take care, really...

However, as Carl Sagan made his character Ellie Arroway say in Contact, if our planet were the only one capable of sustaining sentient lifeforms, it'd be a great waste of space, given the enormous size of the universe... There's hope that there is indeed something like Pandora out there, where the native inhabitants are dealing better with the world around them than we (or rather "we" in quotes, referring to the greedy, superficial and callous majority of humanity as a whole) currently deal with ours...

Even though Miles Quaritch seems to be the wrong person to quote here, his quote rings true in this context: "Time to wake up!"

Haha and the funny thing is, all the SETI programs and such look for civilizations that are like us. Sending out radiowaves and TV programs. An interesting thought is, what if those peoples out there who are REALLY intelligent just know that that kind of doing things does not work out? Like on Pandora? Or in some other way we cannot think of? We'd never hear of them...
One theory of why we have not hear of any "others out there" is that the duration of an industrial civilization capable of producing radiowaves is connected to a rapid depletion of resources, population growth and destruction of the ecology and thereby lasts only decades or centuries before it goes down. This is in terms of the universe not even the blink of an eye...

Ha - so I got an alternative "Wake up, Neo!"

Indeed, it's most likely that they won't expose themselves and move on, looking for more intelligent life forms...

But then, what if there are beings out there, monitoring places like this one and seeing people who exchange their views on things and display openly, that they have a brain for really thinking with it and a heart for feeling and caring, instead of both being just parts of some organic machine... If those watchers were to get in touch with us and ask "We saw how you suffer running against the stupidity and greed destroying your world... we have a place for you where you can live according to your dreams, in harmony with the world around you" - I'd say yes in an instant.

However, that's a dreamer's easy way out of things happening here. I'm sure that there's no cosmic Genie from the lamp hovering around and waiting for us to utter that wish.
(and if there is, get your butt down here right now!!
Errm, I mean, pretty please!! )

On the other hand, that feels like some other beings playing around with us like seen in the end of the first MiB movie, or us merely living in a locker among many others, like in the end of the second one... all a matter of perspective.

Kind of a sobering thought... human legacy being stray radio waves hovering through space after humanity has vanished from the face of the Earth...

Oh, speaking of perspective, I found something that fits just perfectly:

That video in the OP...... Is everything I stand for.

We don't NEED Pandora, we can make our own planet just like it if the majority of people in the world would just stop being such morons, and look after the environment more, and stop these pointless silly wars over a small piece of land............ On a small dot in the universe.

However, the way humanity is going, we will need Pandora unless we change, fast.
(I don't know what it has to do with Xmas either, but that video has a strong message)

Haha yeah, count me in!
Of course religions and spirituality are ways to look at this and hope for it. Like those who thought committing suicide will get them to Pandora and those who think that in 2012 the light being will come and bring a new era with them and so on. It would be cool indeed.
I had a short dream last month. I was imagining, that I am not really here, that I am in fact sitting on a floating island a bit like that in the drawing I have in my gallery on AF and having one hell of a shamanic trip on some hallucinogens. I mean - this has to be crazy stuff for what I experience in that trip - a planet full of people who actively destroy it, fight over the most feeble things and follow completely crazy ideas and ideologies. This is quite insane and I thought that maybe at some pointthat stuff will wear out and I am going to tell my fellow brothers and sisters what a strange and often horrible but sometimes beautiful experience this was, but that I am glad to be home again.

Hehe - quite a story ...
