Question Anybody ever felt a little bit how Jake Suly felt

A while ago, I made the track & field team. Since then, I had injured my shoulder. The doctor has been telling me what I can and can't do like crazy. I've got a track meet tomorrow where I will be doing the 2mile run, 1mile run, .5mile run, the hurdles, and pole vaulting. Don't get me wrong when I say this: I love running, but the one event I really want to do is pole vaulting. My dad did it before me and now I want to do it. But when I asked my doctor if it's alright that I do that, given that I can do like a hundred pushups and do pull-ups, bench press, shoulder press, and bench dips like a maniac, he laughs in my face and says "No way!" It's been 5 months since the injury and I'm sick of people telling me what I can't do. I know it isn't nearly as bad as Jake's case was, but it's basically the same thing. I know this sounds like I'm venting and I don't want it to be another vent thread, so I'll ask about you all. Has anyone ever had a situation with someone telling you what you can't do?
p.s. How many of you think I should do it?

I say go for it. Screw the doctor and his 8 years of med school! What does he know about injuries and the limitations of the human body?

I've seen doctors get that call wrong so many times I'd far rather trust my instincts than their by-the-book advice.

I wouldn't. Because for every time they get it wrong they get it right 10.

Советский меч might not have said it very nicely, but the Doctor probably knows a lot more about it than you do, for a reason. You don't ignore the weather man and try to judge the weather for yourself based on instinct (or ignore a professor, etc).

You can go prove him wrong, maybe, but if he's telling you not to then you at least have to realize it's risky.

Yes. I just had a severe shoulder injury just 150 days ago.
Now, I can listen to the man with the college education and medical schooling.
Or, I can go jump hurdles and pole vault.
I should definitely do the latter. These aren't instincts of his telling him this. This is the typical athlete mindset that your impervious to any and all injuries. Just because doctors aren't always right certainly doesn't mean your instincts are. Where would we be if we always went with our instincts?

I've been off light duty for a couple weeks now, but during that time I couldn't run at all. I was so disappointed. Now I run super-slow DX...I've got work back up to where I was, which is not going to be cool!

However, do what your doctor says. I wouldn't be running again if I hadn't.

The doc gives you advice but it's up to you to follow. Personally I prefer to push the limits. You only live once so live it to your full potential.

I had a similar situation. During my senior year of HS, i got a stress fracture on my left leg. Doc put a full cast on it and said I can't play for 6 months, which meant missing the remaining games of our awesome basketball season. Doc said I couldn't play cuz it would worsen the fracture but I couldn't just sit there and miss my final seasons so I cut off the cast a week later and went back to play. My leg healed up fine and we ended up winning the championship. It was all worth it.

Listen to your body, but take it easy. If you go backwards, you will go back hard.
I've had a problem with a bursa in my heel for over a year and sometimes I still can't run or walk, not to mention jump but I am getting better. When you feel confident, go for it but you need to prepare yourself for the agony of going backwards if you fail.

I decided not to do it, although I really wanted too. The dudes at the meet were only jumping like 8-10ft. I so would've smoked them if I could've done it.

That's good to hear. Before I messed up my shoulder, I could do 170(correct push-ups(shoulders breaking 90 degrees)) in cadence, which is 0ne pushup a second.
