Default Seattles food forest

It

Now here is another good reason to go to seatlle - except that maybe there will be nothing to see there yet. It seems that they are planning to turn a public park into a food forest based on permaculture principles and all people coming there can take fresh apples and pears and what else grows there for free. I always wondered why they do not put more edible plants into public parks, at least Seattle seems to have gone a bit saner.

EDIT: Argh - stupid typo in the title... *"Seattles food forest"

In many cases, the reason is probably something to do with liability, as well as tragedy of the commons, of course.

Interesting though, I wonder how it'll turn out to be successful.

This is such a great idea! Free food and you can be sure it's not full of chemicals or other nasties. I'd like to see more of these sorts of things

Txantsan!! Now why am I not surprised? Seattle seems such a really green city. They seem to have recyling bins and more modes of transport than you can shake a stick it :Trams, Monorail, trains, buses, trolley buses...outstanding!

A public food forest though, that taking it to a whole new level. Would be great if they allowed the community to get involved in the planting and looking after it. That would be just brilliant.

You will probably be able to see it from the top of the Space Needle too!

I guess you cannot really overuse a food forest. You can pick all the fruits and all the berries, then the next one will not have any anymore. But that means that someone had a good use for all these fruits. I guess there will be some gardener there as well, tending for the gardens and prevent people from damaging the park. Same as in other parks that have other trees in them or lawns to play games on. That task will of course not go away. Yet I think it makes a lot of sense to plant apple trees instead of exotic trees that are not providing food. At least within a human environment...

I am looking forward to see what will happen. Generally I think a proven concept is to have a community garden that all members who are participants and do some kind of care for the garden will also be able to harvest, this is a fair model and people will usually not take too much because they know each other. In case of a public park this may be different, so it probably will be that there will have to be some gardeners and maybe some sort of guardian of the park to keep things going and people from breaking things...

Food forest I've had dreams about something like this. Sounds like fun, and like something nobody could ever start where I live But everyone seems so civilized in Seattle
