Default Montana or Oregon?

YAY well I talk about it enough so lotsa people already know, but I'm heading over to the USA at the end of June (I'm from New Zealand, so coming a looong way!!). I'll be in Montana from about the 27th June - 9th July, and then going to Oregon for 10th July - 13th September (2 months!! Woo!). If anyone is around that area, or might possibly plan to be, I would be SO KEEN for a meet-up. It would be really, really wicked. I've got a neat little motel room right on a clifftop overlooking the Oregon coast, but sadly it doesn't have a tv so if we were to watch Avatar (which MUST happen!! I miss it so...) things would have to be organised for that.

It's a couple of months off yet, but thought I'd just see if anyone at all lives around Montana or Oregon, or if anyone might be or could be there any time during those dates. Oh, I am working five days a week in Oregon, so it could be a one day or a weekend thing, but the place I'm working for I'm sure will be happy for me to have whatever time off for anything that might happen (I'm volunteering so yeah, no concrete obligations).

Okay! I've blabbed enough, fingers (and toes) crossed that I'll be able to arrange something with some peoples

Heh. As you know, I take a really long road trip out to the national parks in the American west every year. I will be driving down most of the Oregon Coast on US-101 in mid August, right around the 15th-17th or so. I'm surprised that wolf rescue is on the coast, I figured it would be in interior Oregon.

The Oregon Coast is quite long though, so it's possible I might not be in that area. As for watching Avatar, if the reports are to be believed, it is being re-released in August, so a TV might not be necessary if there's a theater around (which there very well may not be, the Oregon Coast is pretty sparsely populated)

At any rate, sounds like its possible

IT MIGHT BE RE-RELEASED IN AUGUST!!!? EVEN BETTER!!!!!!!

Yeah the Sanctuary is up in the mountains, so I'll have a bit of driving to do each day but that's ok I wanted to stay out on the coast anyways. It'll be nice.

I personally will be driving down the coast in mid-August, between visits to Mount Rainier and Crater Lake. I don't know specifically where Autumnshire is going to be, but I'll be covering from the Washington line to Reedsport. Of course, I could alter my itinerary and continue all the way down through Brookings and Crescent City and take in the Redwoods. The Redwood National Park would actually be a great day activity for Avatarians. It's close to Pandora as the US has, really. The only problem with the Oregon Coast is finding a good 3D theater for the re-release. That may be next to impossible.

I live off of Hwy 140--one of the paths to Crater Lake. If you use Google Earth, the address is 631 Alpine Rd. Eagle Point, Oregon. (zoom in & you'll see the solar grid that's my carport). It's about 15 miles from Medford---and Medford has a Real 3D theatre (maybe 2 by August--they are talking about adding a second one due to Avatar's success locally)....I think this is looking like the start of a plan. My wife isn't into Avatar near as much as I am (by lightyears ), but I'm sure that this could be a stopping point--We have a 8 acre ranch with one spare room + the wife's massage room can be turned into a bedroom for the night......besides, Ashland is just 30 miles away, Shakespeare Theatre under the stars & lots of nice quiet pubs nearby....

I agree about the Redwoods--I was on the Redwood Hwy a couple of weeks ago & stopped at Jedediah Smith State park (note: Return of the Jedi was shot there--as the moon of Endor)--there also is a nature path about 1.5 miles towards the coast on Redwood Hwy that needs to be walked to be believed---also a off-shoot road at Smith River bridge (same area) leads to a local park where you detour around the trees---awe-inspiring....Some of the tallest trees on the West Coast.

Where in Ohio are you coming from?

I am in the Cincinnati area. I own a website on national parks and spend months every year visiting and photographing them. This summer (after flying to Alaska for three weeks first), I will start a roadtrip from my home, going north up through North Dakota, Montana, Idaho, and Washington state. After I go through the Olympic Peninsula and Mount Rainier, the plan is to come down 101 through Oregon, then over to Crater Lake, then down to Lassen Volcanic in CA (and then on many more places, but that is the relevant part )

I have driven through Eagle Point before, as I have been to Crater Lake 3 times and have stayed in Medford, Grants Pass, Prospect, the park itself, Diamond Lake, Roseburg... yeah, I know the area I have also been to the Redwood National/State park complex many times and have almost certainly been on the trail you mention.

This is all going to depend where on the coast Autumnshire is, because it could be quite far from the Medford/Redwood area. Honestly though, a couple days in the Redwoods and seeing Avatar with Avatarians would be worth altering my itinerary as necessary, so the sooner I know where, the better Redwoods aside though, there are a ton of other great areas in Oregon. The Umpqua and Rogue River National Forests have a ton of great streams and waterfalls in them.

Sounds good--I would look forward to some good time...I envy you that job--I'm anchored to one place--I do European Auto Repair--BMW, Mercedes, Jaguar & similar.

I get out as much as I can--really like living here--I've lived in Portland, San Francisco & L.A. over the years & this is where I grew up--so we came back here in the late 90's---My wife wanted horses & I wanted out of the big city rat-race.

There are several very nice falls tucked away up Hwy 62--several around Prospect--about half-way between Medford & Crater Lake.

Let's hope Autumnshire will be based on the South Coast--Would be great to have a food/show/talk session--I'm very sure that if Avatar gets a re-release in mid-August, the Cinemark locally will be showing it--we're about a week or so behind Portland so the timing could be spot-on.

Keep me up on your itinerary--I always have weekends off & that would be perfect to escape upland during the heat of August

Heh, well, it is not a job, yet. I make a little money off of it, but not much. I work a lame but well-paying restaurant job that has summers off to fund the travel.

The falls around Prospect I have seen were in the Mill Creek area, I believe (I may have that name wrong) but there were 2 large falls there, in a park owned by a timber company ironically, if I am remebering right. There are a lot of falls on the north side of Crater Lake National Park as well, I believe off of 138, and also around the Diamond Lake area. The Rogue River Gorge and the bridge are pretty interesting as well, especially if the water is up.

I remember the heat when I stayed in Prospect, it really surprised me. That was in July 2006, and while it was blazing hot there, Crater Lake was still mostly shut down from the snowfall. It was mostly shut down again when I went in July 2009. The only time I've had full access to the park was in August of 2007, so I'm trying August again

Yes--It gets pretty hot here in the summer--and the two falls at Mill Creek were the ones I was thinking of..true its kind'a crazy that a Lumber Co. set the area aside..

Have you been able to get down to the lake? The ride out to Wizard Island is well worth the trek down & back up the side, plus you get to walk around the island in between the boat rides...And the rim drive is very nice around the back side--away from "most" of the casual tourists.....We did have late snow here this year--Mt. McLoughlin is still wearing a good coating of snow & there is a good amount on the ground at Crater--so I'd say that August is your best bet.

Where's your trip going? I'm only 40 miles from the Cal border via I-5---I didn't think that Upland was that far down.......

The only time the Rim Drive was open to Cleetwood Cove was in 2007, and the boat tickets were all sold out by the time I got to the park. So, no, that is something I still have to do. The possible snow levels at both Crater Lake and Lassen Volcanic are one of the main reasons for my whole timeframe of the roadtrip. I usually start in June, but not until August this year. That's also going to put me in the desert parks in California in late August, which means I will die if I get out of the car basically, but that's OK Only spending a night in Death Valley before I head for the Grand Canyon and then Utah.

WOAH you guys have done a lot of planning/brainstorming!!! I'm all excited already and I don't know what we're even doing yet!!!!

Oh and I just looked at a map. Wow. I'm really far away. I'll be staying in Yachats, and working in the Siuslaw National Forest. Uuum hmm. Like I said I'm sure I can take some time off. It's just that I've pre-paid the motel so yeah no refunds on that, and my budget will be quite tight (conversion from $NZ to $US is pretty killer ), but hopefully hopefully HOPEFULLY (all my fingers are crossed) we can work something out. All your ideas sound awesome, even though I know nothing about any of the places you guys have mentioned I guess that's half the fun for me though, hehe.
