    Kaltxi Aaron ,

OOooo a GoPro HD HERO2 cam. I've seen them in the camera shops. Look like a nice little toy with plenty of potential applications.

Glad the 3D worked on those little clips I pulled together. I sent some stills to work to try out on folks there. It seemed to work for them, which is good. I think I have a bit of a way to go yet to learn about all the parameters that are important ot 3D filming, but I'm getting there.

So you split the 3D Avatar and then recombined it! Wow. Amazing. Must have been great to see it in 3D again - even if a bit of it was in black and white.

    (continuing from prior message)

The 3D looks great! It reminds me that I need to get some glasses with better cyan rejection on the red side, as I always seem to get a fair amount of crosstalk in the left eye. I expect I mentioned at some point (probably in the 'HD Pictures of Neytiri' thread) that I dissected the 3D Blu-ray and re-rendered the whole movie in red/cyan anaglyph for my non-3D TV? Well, I did. Most of the daytime shots are very watchable, but the night scenes have too much contrast, at least for my crappy glasses. The 3D effect was even better when I converted the left/right views to black-and-white before hand, as otherwise the Na'vi tend to hit the right eye pretty hard whilst leaving the left eye alone. Ahhh, the one downside to that beautiful blue skin! But, of course, black-and-white is a shameful way to watch Avatar, even if it is in 3D!

Kaltxi, Alan, and a Happy Christmas to you as well! Indeed, Santa did bring me a cam: A GoPro HD HERO2, which I shall be taking to the swimming pool this week and then up into the snowy mountains over the New Year weekend. Should be fun! I can't wait to really try out the 120fps! But alas, no Scarlet or C300. I'll do my best to wait until NAB before cutting loose with any serious amount of money. If I can possibly manage to bring a new toy to the Avatar Meet, I will!

So far, I've only had a few mins to play with the GoPro, but I think I've just about figured out how to undo its fisheye in After Effects. A few more tests...

I may end up grabbing an XF100. It looks like an all-around useful camera. The problem with the NX5, as with the EX1, is the size and weight. It's an awesome camera when I do use it, but its form factor is prohibitive enough that it doesn't come out as often as I would like.

I don't see myself having a need for the SDI and timecode. Not for $1000, anyway! I probably would have picked up an AX2000 instead of the NX5 had the AX2000 not also lacked 720p60, which is what I do most of my shooting in. I really don't do anything that could be called "film," but rather mainly shoot events and home video. If I could stomach shooting 24 fps, I'd have a few more interesting options, methinks!

I'll probably wait a couple of months before picking up a new cam, though. Who knows? Perhaps in the months leading up to NAB, Canon will introduce a 5D Mk III with continuous autofocus, zebra, and all the other missing video features.

Yeah, the EX1 was at F1.9. It does handle the higher gain far better than the XF105. but at 4.5 kg it was a bit much to slug around on my trip. The XF105 is just over 1 kg. For me the EX1 is my 'film making' camera and the XF105 is the 'grap and shoot' camera. Well, that's how it has worked out for me.

Glad it was of use. Gave me an excuse to play with my cameras one thing to point out is that there is and XF100, which is the same as the XF105, only it doesn't have the genlock, making it quite a bit cheaper. I got the 105 so if I decide to got for a bit of the good old stereotography, then I can genlock them together. Whilst editing the clips together I could see the two sets of footage were fractions of a frame out, which you can probably see from the clapper on the stereo clip at the end.

    Well have fun cogitating.

Wow, thanks for that, Alan! (I love your test subject, too! ) The XF105 grain at 18db is pretty ugly, though surprisingly no worse that what I'd expect from the NX5, which has much larger effective photosites. So I'm impressed! The sharpness looks terrific, too. The EX1 is indeed very soft. I would imagine it's much sharper when stopped down, though that would kind of spoil the test!

Thanks again! Very helpful. *begins cogitating*

Funny you should say that as I have a SteadiCam Pilot! Although I'm not sure it could carry the weight though.

As for your question regarding the 'best in low light' between the XF105 and EX1, well, I've done a trial for you. Check this out: EX1 vs XF105.mp4 - YouTube and see what you think.

My own thoughts are that the XF105 seems to work to a lower lux level, and the EX1 gives a softer image. When you start notching the gain up be the same amount on each camera, the XF105 gets a lot grainier. So my preference would be for the EX1..although the XF105 does have night vision!

If you get the Hurricane setup, looks like a Steadicam might be a good companion for it! ... but seriously, that would be a rockin' good time.

One quick question: How do you like the XF105 in low light next to your EX1? Has Canon's legendary image processing mostly made up for the tiny sensor? I love the size and most of the specs of the XF105, but fear shooting full-HD video in available indoor lighting with a single 1/3" sensor. As it is, I find that the three-sensor 1/3" system in the NX5 still makes it plenty easy to shoot grainy video by accident, so while I'm indoors, I'm almost always shooting full manual on the exposure.

Still... I really wouldn't mind something smaller than the NX5.
