Default Jake & Neytiri - an idealised male concept of romance?

Why do we (men especially) find the love between Jake and Neytiri so potent and stirring?

I think Avatar may be an example of something fairly rare in modern films, a straightforward, completely uncynical romance that resonates with men. Jake is how we imagine ourselves and Neytiri how we imagine a perfect woman.

Compare to Titanic. Yes, the romance is there, but as with most films it's a romance that women seem to find more appealing then men.

Then again there is the James Bond series. Yes, this is aimed at men, but by and large women are portrayed as a series of T&As that James can **** and leave.

Maybe we need more romance?

Agree/disagree?

Movies always show perfect life, perfect love... Generally everything is perfect on the screen. In real life it's totally diffrent, that's why poeple want to watch such films. Sometimes it's the only way of "being a part" of something what you wish to happen in your real life. [sorry for possible grammatical errors ]

And trust me - not only men find this love so stirring.

I would have to agree largely with what you said.

I think what makes this romance so potent in many people's minds is that it is, for want of a better word, perfect. Two people who really, truly love each other. They are not in it for any other reason. As you said, this kind of romance is hard to come by in many modern films.

It's an idealisation of what we all want, what we all need and what we all should have.

Okay...going to try and not ramble on about this.
What I noticed about this 'romance' is that they are equals at the end. They are both stereotypical in their genre. Strong female and strong male, but with a slightly reversed role. It is a classic 'falling in love with your mentor' story, and there are a few scenes where it is evident that despite Neytiri's initial annoyance, she eventually realizes that Jake is different and she falls in love with him.
It is not anything new, just presented in a different setting. Everyone realized that Jake had fallen in love with Neytiri when she was showing him how to aim, when she said, 'You are ready'. I think she knew at that point that she had fallen in love with him.
This is a classic plot development and again, it feels as though there are more scenes that are missing that would add depth to their romance.

Like Patrice Maire says above about missing scenes showing the build up of the love between Jake and Neytiri, the dancing scene in the script is a strong part showing this development. Hurry up extended edition...

I don't think it's a "male" concept at all.

I think it works just as well for both genders

I don't think there's any one type of romance that can be classified as "idealized" for either gender. Unless I'm missing something, not every male who's seen Avatar has found the love story appealing (just as not every male who's seen the movie has liked it). Every person is different, and every man or woman looks for different things in their own life's love story.

I'll probably think of a better answer later, but for now I'll just say that the guys who particularly find the romance so stirring are the guys who believe in this:

"Spirit is all that matters."

I Find it intersting that the love story was actully appealing to me even though I'm a guy. I just think that JC created the setting where the romance would be best expressed: in a good partial-fantesy based setting. Sometimes I ether hear tranceing music or deeply emotional storys that put me in a state of deep thought. In those senarios, the romance does appeal to me in a way when it is experssed properly.

It's funny, I have interst in Action games and movies. But In avatar, the action isn't the first thing I think of, but it's actully things like the love story between Jake and Neytiri that come to mind first.

Why do people make movies?

Life is too real for them.
I say a real love is far better than a 'perfect' one.

By too real you mean too unpleasant?

I'd say that real life is somewhat predictable, since we all know for certain the basic plot points, and there's really no room for twists, other than negative ones usually. But I wouldn't say movies are that much different from this, since even they are based on predictable rules of reason, because otherwise we wouldn't understand them.

As for the concept of "real love" and "perfect love", it really comes down to definition of real and perfect, and since even perfect is a subjective concept, so what does "real love" truly mean?

I think Neytiri is just what everyone really wants, someone who can be that perfect lover which is so hard to find

Advent, I'd rather have a perfect love, or at least TRY for it than end up with someone I hate who I have nothing in common with.

I am a girl and I like their relationship. I'm not really into ooey-gooey romance, I'd just like a guy who's there for me, a soul mate. I like how they express their love too-nothing obnoxious like full on making out or making googley eyes at each other- no, it's all about a little hand-holding, standing close to each other for support, and that beautiful scene where they touched forheads. Very simple yet profound.

Another thing is that you've talked about Neytiri being the ideal lover from a male's perspective, and while I can't say Jake is my ideal man, the level of devotion he shows for Neytiri is incredible. The fact that he was willing to risk the life of his avatar, which is pretty much everything to him, for her (yes, the Omoticaya too, but who does he go to see after he lands? Neytiri. He ignores everyone else and walks straight to her, like she's the only person in his world) is mind-boggling. That's one in a million I think. If a guy were willing to go that far for me?... Wow

You forget my concept, HNM. A perfect love, exists in movies. IT DOES NOT EXIST.
Any real lovers have arguments all the time. Sure, Neytiri and Jake did, but think. Why the hell did Neytiri instantly forgive him just cos he was on the Toruk? Fake. 100% guaranteed!

And tennyo, no offense, but he didn't have much of a choice. It's either that, the RDA, or just living in the woods for the rest of your life.
And still, he has life insurance. Lucky swine.

People make movies, books, fiction, because they prefer things in their own little world. Everyone does. They can just afford to release them.
I can arguably say that no one loves real life. Cos they have N/A control over it.

You seem to have quite an affinity for real life.

Whatever, I don't care. And gee, romance in movies isn't like romance in real life? Shocking
