This bit seems odd to me, since I remember Jake being a little anti-intellectual, compared to say, Tom. He seemed to be "average intelligent and proud of it."

What does the ability to write essays got to do with intelligence? Jake always struck me as someone quite smart but, because he never got the grades that his twin did (for whatever reason - could be as simple as Tom got a good teacher when they were young while Jake got a bad, and then natural competitiveness took over so Tom was the brains, Jake the athlete) , grew up calling himself stupid so it wouldn't hurt as much when he failed in comparison with his brother.

And you don't have to write essays when you're an enlisted Marine - you have to write reports, and you may have to do sophisticated engineering and calculation on the fly, but you don't have to write a forty-page essay with citations. You do, however, have to have a grounding in mechanics to blow up a bridge.

Surely they still need 'point this at the bad guys and pull this bit, always holding it this way round' types as well?

It doesn't. I'm just saying I got the impression that Jake was somewhat anti-intellectual, which is completely unrelated to actual intelligence.

Which can be equally, if not more complicated than writing an essay.

Well, the modern USMC is starting to use UAVs and such all over the place.

...Yes. It's called all of the infantry. Who are also taught who to write reports, and observe, and dismantle and reassemble weapons, and a whole host of other complicated things. Not to mention I'm pretty sure I read that nowdays there is a growing trend for infantry to be specialists - the days of just general-purpose 'grunts' is start to decline (as far as I remember, anyway). Military has come a way from the era when you had rows of men standing in lines and firing at each other.

Well, impressions are impressions, and I can't argue against that. But you were the one to link 'intellectual' with 'intelligence', and I really wish you wouldn't.

Yep, just as complicated, if not more. It also involves entirely different skills, which is my point. I can write the pants off a lot of people when it comes to essays - give me equations, and I start to flail. Different intelligence.

Modern society, however, says that if you don't have a degree, you're an idiot.

Perhaps - I know specialists are needed, but I thought they still need a base of the people who provide the actual strength and who they order around.
As for UAVs, yes, thy are used, but much has been said on the design of them - modern ones are capable of performing automated takeoff and landing under most conditions, for example.

Nobody did. Intellectual is one form of intelligence, arguably the most prominent, but it is the one that applies in this specific example.

Not true. It is actually recognised that many intelligent people may be less inclined to because they have other interests - equally, there are many degrees which rely less on sciences and engineering and more on writing essays, so, as you said, different types of intelligence.

i wish so much that my moviemaker hadnt conked out...i have this awesome idea for a vid of the ground battle. i dont remember the name of the big hammerheaded elephant sort of creature, but when they come charging through the forest and hit the human battle lines, i have this mental overlay of Col.Hathi from Disney's 'Jungle Book', when they both are just on 'dawn patrol' and when they look for Mowgli. i would so love to cut the two together, or find characters in Avatar to do lipsynchs. that part is one of my faves in the movie, living trash compactors! especially liked seeing Trudy's stupid gunner in his AMP getting smushed like a bug!

That is def. an interesting idea for an alternate end to Quaritch, but yea I would have still have him killed( I don't see him quitting anyway even if he was clearly out matched by Jake and Neytiri, the hate in him wouldn't allow it.

There are still a few questions as to what happened to Jakes human body after the transfer
I do like your take on an alternative ending. I think it would have realy driven home the core meaning
of Jakes inner moral values in a primal way. "I am one of them "now"
I have allways spoken on how Avatars examples "Bridge" betwean diffrent
world views on a number of very deep levels , at the core of this is the "rebirthing
experence".
When one looks to the roots of the films mirrored cultural and spiritual
Viewpoints. (one could call it a Fantality film Fantasy reflecting upon reality) based on a huge amount of cultural
and spiritual research in native peoples and there real experences around our world.
As far as some peoples experence with Avatar goes the "Rebirthing experence" is not
as far fetched or imposable as one thinks but everyone has there own opinions
Because Avatar is a mirror story ones "experence" can be driven by ones
reflection on very real world history and deep inner memorys, Driven from ones own inner accountably and sense of self
one might make a "core choise" to change ones "world-view" at a primal core level this is called "rebirthing" .
when ones "inner self" a part of ones "core" heartfelt understanding "sees" huge value in changing ones world-view
