Default Other Avatars

i have always questioned why the other avatars aren't out there doing what jake and norm did.

After jake enters his body and runs out the room there are other avatars playing basketball, and going through obstacles. Why is it all of a sudden when jake and norm get there they go straight into the forest?

Any ideas?

They still do go out - they do have to maintain their avatars' bodies (exercising, eating) as well as being out performing research.

What seems most likely to me is that they were set to do research in other parts of the forest on different things with different scientists.

What those above said.

They were probably out there, the story just didn't follow them. It would have been cool though to see Grace (as Avatar) seen talking to other Avatars about there research, either at the base or run into them in the forest.

They were doing their jobs - they also have to do things on base (such as keeping fit, which would be basic training), but they would have been out there in different areas and camps as well.

Which would have meant Trudy (as the science pilot) had a lot of flying back and forth from the mountains to be there as much as she was in canon, but ah well.

Was there really only one science pilot? Seems to be kind of a stretch of her job.

She told Jake, "I fly all the science sorties."

Sounds like she's the only one to me. Now, if that was a new situation and she used to have another pilot aiding her, that's not said.

Well, there are 15+ avatars, but not all of them may need to go as far away, so some could conceivably walk.

Or even be stationed at other camps, so they can be left there for weeks on end without needing constantly flying around.

And others could possibly be there just to exercise the science of Avatars

Well, they certainly were left with less to do after the marines attacked the school, but presumably the ones who were there to work with the Na'vi before would still take part in the biological research instead.

Actually, I'm not sure about that - that the Avatars would be left with less to do. The school seemed to be mainly Grace's jig (certainly I didn't see any other photographs of any other Avatars). I always figured the other Avatar-drivers were geologists, biologists, and all of that - people who would do field-trips out into the wilds and study, or scope out new sites, draw maps, etc. Not all be doing anthropology work with Grace.

Good point.
I wonder how much progress the Avatar Drivers made?

Certainly would be a lot of progress by any Earth standards.

It's certainly possible that others still met with the Na'vi and interacted, even if they didn't participate in the school actively teaching like Grace did.
Of course, they could easily have been there on a temporary basis in terms of sharing knowledge with the Na'vi as well, with Grace just running things - after all, Grace is a botanist and not directly related to study of the Na'vi in her qualification.
