"Avatar movie producer interested in Avatar MMO"

Avatar movie producer interested in Avatar MMO - Massively

The movie has already been turned into a single player game, and now our friends at G4TV report that Producer Jon Landau says he's "very interested" in the creation of an Avatar MMO. Before you groan in despair, hear him out. The focus doesn't seem to be on shoving something out the door right away while the money machine is still running at full speed: "it's something we'd want to do, would be very interested in doing, but we'd have to do it right. To create those worlds is sometimes a long time endeavor."

Landau continues by exploring the concept of 3-D gaming -- a feature that would be almost a given in an Avatar MMO: "I think that the addition of 3-D in gaming tends to be more transformative than 3-D is to movies. [...] I think we're starting to see the start of 3-D becoming commonplace in gaming."
All I have to say... DO WANT :D

Most modern moniters can do 3D already, you just need the correct glasses and a game with 3D formatting.

THIS IS MY DREAM!!!! I was hooked on WOW for like 2 years... This would triumph any game that I have ever played if they make the gameplay as good as WOW but with better graphics. SOOO excited wow

Isard 05-06-2010 09:02 PM

Oh!

Or if CCP got their hands on it...

CCP/bioware...

O.o

Mind blown.

Fkeu'itan 05-06-2010 09:25 PM

Damn...

Now they're going to find a skeleton sat infront of a monitor, various cans of red bull and pot noodles scattered all over the place.

It will be mine.

WoW will still be on top.

Boy....maybe I'm way off base, but wouldn't this be cool with some sort of 3D encapsulated monitor helmet and tactile gloves? It could become very much like driving an Avatar in time. I just do flight sim - no gamer I, so I've no idea what might be available in terms of hardware.

The problem I see is that cynical commercial exploitation might ruin what could have been a great game. I just wasn't enamored with the Avatar game as is, and if this is just re-hashed for an MMORPG I feel like it won't do the franchise justice.

Immo39 05-07-2010 01:15 PM

I think the success will also be whether JC himself wants it or gives the go light for the MMO and is a major player in it. After all, Avatar is his brainchild, and for it to be mass-marketed as an multiplayer online game is just really cashing in more on the money.. and if it turns out less satisfactory it only reinforces that point..

Eltu 05-07-2010 01:32 PM

It seems like many people want to play this game if it gets released...

I will NEVER, repeat NEVER play an Avatar MMO. For several reasons:

1. It will cost money. I do not want to pay money to talk to all of you.

2. I really like our conversations about deeper things the most. These kind of things I feel can be discussed better here and in IRC, than in a computer game.

3. I want to feel Pandora in my mind, get my own impression of how it would feel to be there. Not really play it out in a game.

4. I am not interested in playing a game. I want to talk to all of you, befriend you. Not play a game.

5. An avatar game would force me to focus on that and nothing else if I would like to speak to you. Right now I can do things at the same time, which is very important for me as I am a quite busy person.

In other words... a complete no-go for me.

Ay'iheyu 05-07-2010 02:32 PM

If bioware gets it OH MY GOD. :D :D :D
I think an Avatar MMO would be really fun! I'd still hang out at the forums, so we can still talk. I don't think one thing can replace the other.

I already said this in IRC, will repeat it here since nobody really listened before:
1. You don't need to 'pay money to talk to all of you'. You won't play the MMO, whatever, but I'm not going to stop talking to you because you don't...

2. Again, I'm not going to stop talking to you because you aren't playing.

3. Well, that's your opinion, but I'll say, then why did you watch Avatar? Surely it would be better to imagine it?

4. YET AGAIN... I'm not going to stop talking to you because you don't play...

5. Fair enough, I guess, although personally I know I could play it and still do other things.

Because it appeals to the lowest common denominator, people who could never play a real MMO. The truth is, it doesn't matter. A mass influx of new players who are completely clueless is bad for an MMO, it happens to EVE semi-regularly.

madman 05-07-2010 05:19 PM

Kind of off topic, but makes me happy anyway. The new first round pick for the Chargers (Ryan Matthews) says his favorite game is WOW. Wonder what class he prefers. :D

tm20 05-09-2010 08:33 AM

i used to give my WoW playing friends a hard time for obsessing with something I considered lame, but if an Avatar MMO does come out then I guess I'm a hypocrite :D

Light Kirin 05-15-2010 05:26 PM

I hope it turns out good. I never played the other game because I heard it wasn't very good. A lot of times, video games based on movies aren't that great.

nickneagle 05-17-2010 04:28 PM

I certainly think it could be a good idea. I dont think the PS3 game is the best, but learning from that they could sure create more games that draw us in even more.
