Microsoft's Future Vision for 2019.

What do you think? :)

Hmm... This is definitely up for a long conversation/discussion tonight! :) I can see a lot of fancy new and good ideas, but also some problems... I'll tell you more about it in detail later on but to be honest with you, they need to balance both nature and technology if they want to live. Another thing, there was one thought that popped up in mind while viewing this video.

You notice how far ahead they are in technology but not so much working alongside with nature as to learn from its ways of life. So technically, they're still separate from it even though they're trying to work on new ways of productivity. Not to mention, with all the natural causes of calamity in today's world, how would that generation even react to the changes? I do not see so much preparedness for such an emergency situation due to being so reliant on their technology. It does have it's positive side for certain ways of creativity and overall better quality of living, but you have to ask... Is it good for the environment? Is it good for our spiritual, mental, emotional, and physical state of being while being trapped into pretty much the same era we live in now? Are the products environmentally sustainable and capable of working with nature in such a way that it wouldn't be considered waste and incapable of going back to its roots?

I'm not saying all of this is negative or even bad, but what I am saying is, these are important facts and options to be considered if we're going to be living in a sustainable world at this poignant time in history. We cannot be looking into the future constantly if we're going to create a better world tomorrow if we completely forget the present. I would say that the technology we create has to work alongside with nature instead of separating itself with it. My only gripe with this video is that I don't see a lot of them being prepared for a natural disaster if it comes along and destroys everything in their path. They're not ready in many ways if such a situation occurred in my opinion.

I'll be posting more later tonight! Thanks for the video Thorinair! :)

Wow, nice done. And what a surprise in the end. I noticed most importance was given transparent OLEDs, i love them :). From technological point of view I believe the video is very realistic. Unfortunatelly I think that it is too idealistic because people won't adopt it so quick and it presumes that we will have enough funds for all this. However MS has good advertising skills, i like the way video was done and I appreciate that they mentioned "green" few times :).
But it seems like people want to bring nature into their homes but still don't know how live in nature and all these technologies just isolate them more and more. I was somehow sad about recognizing that fact in the end. But this is vision of future from MS Office team perspective , it can't be taken as complete, or something that can describe real life.

It all looked cool, but adoption of technology in business has to do return of investment. It has to increase productivity more than it increases costs or forget it. There are a lot of technological barriers that have to be crossed before we get to anything like was shown in that video. Maybe 2029, not 2019.

Exactly. And also this is reason of delay to 2029 or whenever. I think that technology is minor problem here. If there is enough funds present, all can be speeded up (in good or bad meaning).

I love the idea. I believe that technology is the future... And nature...

'Your future, and our future, is a greener and a healthier planet. At Microsoft we'd like to remind you that this future is coming.'

I Love how windows wasn't mentioned once in that, which shows microsoft may now be working on another OS...

You know, this is a beautiful technological utopia; but just thinking on the efforts needed to make this technology universal, and the resources, money,... (specially money), the dreams turns out into a piece of crap.

Think on the competition between Mac and Microsoft, or how to make it available to the billions of people that inhabit Earth; how to avoid eating up too many resources...

Yes, it's going to be something difficult to accomplish.

Anyway, dreaming is still free.

The apple vs microsoft debate is a fail. Microsoft have won, they've been leading for years, and will be leading for years to come.

Na'vi_supporter 05-22-2010 07:17 PM

In fact they have the technology, they can do it...

YouTube - Microsoft Surface - Exclusive Review

This is actually about 2 years old table... They had presentation in MS office in my country year ago, so I am sure it works. Multitouch support etc. is incorporated in Windows 7, also nothing new. Transparent OLEDs are in prototype versions.

The problem is usability and if it can really do good job in everyday life...

Microsoft surface?
You mean this right...

ZenitYerkes 05-22-2010 07:36 PM

But, just imagine getting a bluescreen on one of those super technological devices.

;)

haha..yeah, bsod will ruin your day, especially in case of big ass table :D
How far is time when people will be so dependent upon these devices that this will prevent them from doing anything...

Exactly, tech dependence is an actual issue. Instead of going down a hill in winter, kids will be playing something like 3D reality instead. And people would rather stay in home ordering what they need or get in their cars instead of taking a walk. Artisan crafts will be part of the past.

And what's worse, it's already happening.

I think we've got a new debate thread.

Yes 100% agree. And I am personally "good" example, I spent about half year playing Second Life etc. Hell I just spent many hours a day in this "virtual world". And it took me long to find again a better way to spend time after work. Now I spend very small amount of time in such games and it is worth it ... better to go out in the nature instead of wasting precious life-time and ruining body... But try to explain this to somone who started with these things :(
