Hmm, this is very true... But I somehow link Blade Runner with Pandora itself in my mind. Don't ask me how it works, because it probably doesn't... I just... yeah, it reminds me of it.

Battle for Terra was an obscure independent movie released about three or four years ago. Its content seems to be EXACTLY like Avatar's in terms of basic plot, characters, and ethical dilemmas (not to mention that it was released in 3-D in the small handful of movie theaters it played in). Its like a children's animated version of Avatar.

See the similarities?

I'm watching this one Hulu right now. It has quite a few similarities. Unfortunately Hulu only allows me to watch it in low quality, not 720 so the graphics aren't that great. Pretty good movie...until the end. Almost brought tears to my eyes....

But if you got the chance to watch it, do it. It's an animated cgi film but very intense and brings out the emotions in you. The ending was TOO similar to Avatar when the human turns against his own and destroys the main machine to save the aliens and their planet, just like Jake did.

This, my favorite scene from Lion King!

Rafiki is the old and wise mandrill shaman of the Pridelands. He is shown to be a dear friend to Mufasa. This is reflected in his name, which is a play on the Arabic word "rafiki", meaning "my friend". When Simba runs away and his family believes him dead, Rafiki journeys to the area where Simba lives with Timon and Pumbaa, Rafiki observes Simba and recognizes, at least in principle, that he is suffering from a ponderous emotional burden. To treat it, he approaches the young lion and teaches him a few playful (and sometimes painful) lessons about learning from the past, not living in it. He also points out that the spirit and values of his 'father' (which I interpret of his predecessors) ... continue to live in Simba himself.

In the musical, the character of Rafiki was modified. Because director Julie Taymor felt that the story lacked the presence of a strong female, Rafiki was changed into a female mandrill. Rafiki's role is expanded in the musical. She sings the song "Circle of Life" and her painting scene is extended. She also sings a song called "Rafiki Mourns", in which she mourns Mufasa's death. She also has a brief role in Nala's song "Shadowland", blessing Nala for her journey to find help. Instead of finding Simba's scent on dust, Rafiki hears Simba's song "Endless Night" on the wind. Rafiki meets Simba and shows him that his father lives on inside him through the song "He Lives in You".

In the essence I see the similarity of Mo'at to Rafiki!

I just watched Prince Caspian and there are elements of that movie that remind me of Avatar.

You have a human Kingdon trying to wipe out the Narnians who are all animals or mythological beings which are half animal half humans.

During the war between the humans and the Narnians, a few humans who come from a fight for the Narnians.

Also the Narnians use flying creatures that reminded me of Avatar.

The older sister called Susan Pevensie is skilled archer who kills with almost Legolas like precision.

The Time Machine made in 2002. If that doesn't remind me of avatar, I don't know what does. If you haven't seen it, I suggest you watch. Its weird in some places but I watch it for the River People. You'll see what I mean

Thunderheart, it's a 1992 fictionelized film based loosely on what is known as The Wounded Knee Incident in 1973. In many ways it parallels Avatar, complete with land issues, etc. I recommend that as Avatar fans that you need to watch this non-romanticised presentation of Native culture, for a more critical understanding of the complexity of Native/Inigenious issues in modern context. Inclusive would be to read the Wiki review of this film.

Freedom Riders! A PBS documentary, regarding the Civil Right's Movement of the early 1960's (when i was born), that focuses on the peaceful attempts to get Interstate Busing desegratized. What's powerful about this documentary is it a insight look at how a movement for a cause worth fighting for started, grew, and united people from all walks and cultures. Also the emphasis on how 'students' 20 (yr) somethings we're willing to give up their liberty's for the fight for freedom. They willing choose to ride the segregated buses, knowing they faced possible violence on the trip, and at the journeys end, Jackson Mississipi, that they would be arrested to go to jail, but did so as part of the process. There's much more to the documentary and you can read about it at

Since HarryCanyon already listed the titles of the three Hayao Miyazakis that indeed share the message with Avatar, you could add Spirited Away to the list, too - consider the episode with the dirty River God being cleaned in the bathhouse... lovely, and so true.

Thinking of anime, there's also Earth Girl Arjuna, with the very profound message of a planet screaming for help. In her function, Juna is also an avatar of a special power in her Arjuna. Some religious influence from India is quite apparent in that one, too, since her mentor his named Chris - Krishna and Arjuna, anyone? ;)

I also listed Earth Girl Arjuna in the favourite anime thread being one of my all-time favourites.

The movie doesn't remind me of avatar but the ending sure as hell does! The most recent twighlight film pretty much copied the ending of avatar when they bring bella back as a vampire and the camera slowly moves over her face to her eyes and then her eyes open. The film ends right there.

I was jumpin up and down saying "copycats!" when i saw that today. LOL

A rather moving film about the clash between modern civilisation and the inhabitants of the Amazon is Where the River runs Black. Its about a little boy whos native mother is killed by intruders from the so called civilized world.. The little boy are taken care of by river dolphins and lives among them for a while. When he is captured and brought to the civilisation he is intent on taking revenge on those who killed his mother.

Also we have a film with a theme that reminds of Avatar. It is the film Amazon Forever, from 2004.

Quote:

Nicolas, a young French filmmaker goes to the Toa Toari reserve in the Xingu River valley to film the Kuarup ceremony. Nicolas falls in love with Chief Ayupu's daughter. He adapts to Xingu customs and is recruited to the cause of fighting the Portuguese loggers who are destroying the forest. He films the loggers' destructive ways, and films the Xingu defending their land, and finally goes to Rio de Janeiro and abroad to raise awareness of the plight of the rainforest.

Wow, wish I could watch that but it seems it is not closed captioned. :( Sad, very sad, only.
