And it does not look good kids (DUNDUNDUUNNN)

PS: I hope none of this data were for real.

I've seen that presentation before. All those statistics were true at the time of the video's creation.

Only thing I fear about when watching this is the overpopulation in some countries.
Anyway interesting statistics, i didnt even know that the numbers are rising so fast.

By 2049, a $1000 computer will exceed the computational capabilities of the enitire human population.
This, does not look good, one bit.

Loverofnature 05-23-2010 12:20 AM

agreed with you there, i mean jsut that is going to exceed the human brain is not good, why does people wanna make **** like that?

Na'vi_supporter 05-23-2010 12:44 AM

I wouldn't bee so afraid. Computers are even now way faster than human brain at some tasks. But without real AI algorithms they are just stupid calculators. Yes they can do billions simple arithmetic operations per second but it is all they can. And we are far far away from reaching the goal of making intelligent maschine, all discoveries and even artificial neural networks doesn't work any good in this field. So I am calm :).
In fact I vote for improvements in computers (I am not saying AI...), but maybe more for scientific purposes than for useless wasting of power by insanly fast maschines just for entertainment. Supercomputers are really needed for real science!

It's not a problem of when, it's a problem of will humans really want a machine to think for themselves. There's no positive outcome in constructing slaves can think for themselves.

I laugh. Really, I do. Welcome to the way things are, my friends. This isn't a put down, but I know that the majority of ToS falls in a range from the mid-teens to the mid-twenties. I remember that time of my life well...I studied a book in high school called "Future Shock" by Alvin Toffler. The general concept: the rate of change is increasing. All. The. Time. So this video is simply not news. Now I'm not trying to play the age card here (Really, Spock!!), but I can relate to how this video must make a lot of you feel. And I can assure you, there's nothing to worry about. Go with the flow. Don't let numbers scare you. You'll do fine. I have, and so has my 85 year old father. The thing to remember is this:

We go into the future one day at a time. Keep your eyes open, and be willing to adapt. Above all be willing to learn, and to be your best. Encourage the same in others. Be leaders.

Word "goal" was really bad choosen term. I don't want this to happen. Because we have no chance to prevent AI to take control of us forever. Whatever anyone says, I guess it's really impossible to keep it doing what we want.

Thanks, Jon. I often feel my wrinkles and greying hair these days - I turn 55 next Saturday! (Rubs hands in eager anticipation of "senior citizen" discounts!!) I envy and enjoy the generation most repped by this forum, and I know you fit somewhere between the extremes here. I have to concede a bit of envy. I would agree a lot of unfortunate stuff is on the radar, but the marvels that await us in the next 30 to 50 years are staggering. I plan to be around for most of it. It's going to be fascinating!

Take care of yourself and you will be around for it brother. I'm so very happy to be able to share so much with so many different age groups and ethnicities. Seeing the age barrier being not an issue here is simply awesome!

Fkeu'itan 05-23-2010 05:31 PM

Despite both seeing this video before (I saw one back in 2008 with different information however) and Taw Makto's wise words, I am still genuinely terrified of the way things are going.

Eventually, we're going to lose all forms of real culture and end up with some backwards technology fuelled mess. I'm sorry I feel this way and you may well call me a hypocrite, but it's a very, very sad thought.

Taw Makto 05-23-2010 06:25 PM

All the wisdom is a sham, Fkey'itan....;) I'm suitably concerned too. As the rate of change increases, the ability to control our destiny seems somehow muted. Just like a car speeding, whether in control or not, we're building up a lot of momentum. Watch that curve up ahead! :)

Fkeu'itan 05-23-2010 06:46 PM

Indeed. The problem is, will that crash barrier hold?
