The Problem

When we rant about how things are literally going sh*t, or feel things are not right; it's not because our surroundings -rivers, trees, animals,...- are doing any bad to us, it's us who create our own trouble. The cars, the factories, the mortgage, the taxes, money,...

Because we have this, and turn it into this. Or kick someone's ass for having some of it. Or kill for ruling over a piece of land.

The planet is perfect. It's us what is horrible.

Spock 05-23-2010 09:21 AM

Oh the humanity.

Helicoradian 05-23-2010 09:32 AM

We are destroying ourselves, all the earth needs to do is wait it out. Eventually the problem solves itself.

There is another debate altogether. The way I see it is we have three possibilities for the future.

1: Star Trek - Humanity

2: Avatar - Humanity

3 We wipe ourselves out. Or some other natural event destroys us.

Well, #3 is the most logical I suppose

Perhaps, only leaps and bounds in technological advancement could save us from that. One such as the first artificially engineered cell.

Helicoradian 05-23-2010 10:17 AM

Perhaps we don't need technological advancement, but instead to stop, see what we are doing, and try and to value what we have. What would we do with an artificially engineered cell? use it to help us live longer? for the past couple of hundred years we (as in humanity) have been nothing but a cancer on the face of this earth. We take what we want without care, for the sake of this planet, do we really need to live longer? maybe "seeing" is the next step. A leap in intellectual advancement....

We don't need it, but me and Zenit are answering some of these questions over in this thread:

You can spend years writhing in agony over how horrid humanity is, or become a constructive, optimistic and energetic part of correcting the problems. It's been well said time and again: If you aren't part of the solution, you're part of the problem. Talking about the problem doesn't solve it.

I'll have to stop being a cynic then.

Realizing you're part of the problem, is the first step of being part of the solution:)

Admitting we've got a problem is the beginning of the solution.

However, it's just the beginning. If you're going to cling on to that, you're not solving anything, and thus becoming part of the problem.

Don't mistake accurate analysis for cynicism, Spock. Two different things. The "You" didn't necessarily mean you, dude, by the way. That said, cynicism is the acceptance of the negative outcome as default. Never a good thing if one ever hopes to overcome obstacles. Rampant optimism is just as bad. As in all things, a carefully contemplated balance is best.

Helicoradian, ZenitYerkes....right on target. We concur. :D

No no, I knew what I was saying. I am often cynical. Although in mind only. My practical actions are often logically driven. So I suppose it's irrelevant.

Or perhaps it is this, even, that will lead to our downfall.
