Was Avatar Your First 3-D Movie?
 

First of all, sorry if this sounds awkward/is grammatically incorrect/redundant/generally incoherent and impossible to read, I'm very tired right now and frankly should not be posting. Anyway, I'm asking this because my first real-D 3-D movie was My Bloody Valentine (which I saw because I wanted to see Jensen Ackles on the big screen, lol) and the 3-D looked pretty much the same to me. Don't get me wrong, I'm NOT comparing the two films to one another (after all, a Monet [painter generally accepted as "good" and randomly chosen for this illustration] and porn gratified on the side of the building are both color [although, art is in the eye of the beholder... screw it, you get it :P]), but the 3-D (NOTHING else) had the same look. My question is why, if there have been other 3-D movies out there, is Avatar the film that is "revolutionizing the way people view movies?" I mean, the IMAX theater I went to see it in already had 3-D, and the theater in my city had just recently renovated a screen (a tiny SUCKY one :P) to real-D. Obviously, the 3-D movement was already started before Avatar was released. I just think it's interesting that there was this huge fuss about James Cameron's "awesum new 3-D tech!" when what I'd seen before looked pretty much the same (again, just the 3-D).

I guess it's because it was the combination between the INTENSE visuals and the 3-D that has not only made it into the movie of the decade (or whatever) and has thus garnered so much attention and has thus turned so many people on to the possibilities of 3-D technology (also proves haters wrong--it's not just the 3-D that people are into, they also like the floating mountains, the glowing plants, and the sexy blue cat people [well, some of them are sexy anyway...]! lol, Joking, joking). Wow, answered my own question. Anyway, thoughts?

Avatar was my second 3D film. I saw Beowulf in 3D and to be honest, I think 3D has come a long way in those couple of years. Think it was out in 2007. But maybe its because Avatar's visual aesthetics are much better than Beowulf so the 3D looked better.

Aoitennyo, I have only just realised what your avatar picture is! I thought it was just a scene of the jungle at night till I actually looked closer! How much of a plank am I!

lol, a plank? Ha ha, that sounds funny (remember, so-tired-it's-like-being-drunk). Yeah, it's an image alot of people are familiar with, but it's also pretty indistinct. Also, MBV3D was released in 2009. Maybe at the time of filming James Cameron's technology was new?

Up was actually my first 3D movie (Except all of those short 10 minute Imax things I saw when I was about 12 but I don't count those) and I would actually say the 3D in Up and Avatar were pretty close. Up too was hailed as a new era of 3D.

I think what sets them apart is they don't use the 3D tech in a gimmicky way. Things don't fly out of the screen at you and the likes, it simply adds another dimension (Excuse the pun :P) of depth and immersion to the film.

I'd say the fact that it was Pandora that was in 3-D that made the difference :D.

Pandora was the most immersive place I have ever seen, the 3D made it feel even more like you were actually stood there.

It was the first 3d movie for me. The way it adds depth instead of having things fly out at you really added more to the film. Initially I was afraid that it would make me motion sick or be too distracting, but the opposite was true thankfully:)

My first, and hopefully the last. At least until they start doing all 3D movies properly, like Avatar was. I went to see How to train your Dragon in 3D, and all I got out of it was a horrible headache.

first 3d film i ever saw was some **** version of the nutcracker back in 199 something.... the 3D was good but the glasses were terrible, they were uncomfortable and it gave me a headache

'Spy Kids 3' was the first 3D movie I had seen. It was also the last 3D movie I had ever seen up until Avatar.

The first 3d movie I saw was about 20 years ago or more. It was some cheesy Western with tomahawks flying out the screen. Didn't look that great.

Avatar was indeed my first 3D movie ever. It's definitely the only movie that I'm willing to pay extra for the 3D.

For me it was the second after 2012. But the experience caught with Avatar was the greatest in al my 6 IMAX viewings of it.
