Alice In Wonderland.

MANY have voiced their strong opposition against this film, mostly for reasons like "I hate Tim Burton", "I hate Johnny Depp", "It replaced Avatar", "It isn't as good as Avatar", etc.

I, for one, absolutely adored the movie. I'm obsessed with it, almost as much as I am with Avatar. Many here probably don't agree, think it's crap, and I understand why. However, I'd like to start a discussion (an intelligent one, not just flaming) about what anyone like or disliked about the film. I'm not a big Burton fan. I'm not a huge Depp fan either. I didn't, however, compare Alice to Avatar while watching, which is a huge plus for me, since I didn't have to beat myself for liking something else.

But anyway, discuss why you hated/disliked it, or (for probably maybe 4 or 5 members here) how you loved/liked it. :)

Immo39 03-16-2010 03:11 AM

While I personally feel that Alice in Wonderland couldn't really be compared to Avatar (maybe I'm biased :P), I feel that the underlying message - pursue your dreams, don't let the rest of society drag you down with their paradigms, really applies to us Avatar fans as well.

The movie was a bit predictable, and the acting wasn't that fantastic, but overall there's interesting scenes, good graphics and a respectable plot.

Shatnerpossum 03-16-2010 03:44 AM

I do hate Tim Burton, and most of Johnny Depp's roles. But, in the spirit of optimism and good humor, I'll honor the old adage "if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all."

Human No More 03-16-2010 02:24 PM

I haven't seen it, don't plan to. Neutral on Tim Burton himself, not even sure what else he's done, but the film itself just doesn't really appeal to me much.
I rarely watch films in the cinema though, the last one I watched there before Avatar was that JJ Abrams Star Trek parody.

Leonopteryx 03-16-2010 02:47 PM

i saw it, i liked the message, and the colorful world, i just didnt feel immersed in it, had burton actually gotten me immersed in it, i would most likely have loved it. besides that, i thought it was a good movie, bit predictable but so was avatar (i think AIW was even more predictable though)

guyguy 03-17-2010 08:31 AM

I though it was good because of the subtile Burton style!
( that come with depp/bonham carter)
and originality, seeing that movie almost as a sequel of what actually happened merely 13 years earlier was brilliant
not a movie i would watch back to back but i really enjoyed

Thorinair 03-17-2010 09:32 AM

Dunno, I simply loved it! It was a great movie in my opinion... :)

Pa'li Makto 03-17-2010 10:19 AM

I watched it.
It was okay to watch, the cheshire cat was done well.
However, I don't feel that it retained the original magic of Alice and Wonderland.
It needed something more to really grab my interest.

Fkeu'itan 03-17-2010 01:06 PM

I haven't seen it yet so I can't really comment, but I don't particularly want to either...

Lyra 03-17-2010 04:27 PM

I Liked avatar, but i feel that burton should have done a full 'reboot' telling alice in wonderland for what the original was, be he should have warped it. I'd have looved to have seen Dakota Blue Richards (my choice) to play alice. :P

TxonTirea 03-17-2010 06:32 PM

Not planning to see it, never liked the story, so I will not like this.

Iknimaya 03-17-2010 08:22 PM

You know, I love Tim Burton, Johnny Depp, and the original Lewis Carroll novel, but for some reason I wasn't at all excited for this film. I do still want to see it though.

KalaKuival 03-17-2010 08:23 PM

I watched it in 3D...
Personally i had no intention to go, but i was invited by the same people who called me to watch Avatar (which i wouldn't have watched at all:S) and i thought it was a somekinda sign maybe, that i should see it.

But i must say it wasn't that great. Alright there were some cool scenes, but nothing that special...:(

Woodsprite 03-17-2010 11:22 PM

Well we've gotta remember that this movie isn't based on Alice In Wonderland but rather primarily on Carroll's sequel to it, Through the Looking Glass. :)

Vauktu 03-18-2010 10:00 AM

I have yet to see AiW in the theater as it does not appeal to me. The same goes for most movies. I've only seen two different movies in the last 5 years. :P

There's a chance I'll buy it on Bluray once it is released.

Chris 03-19-2010 09:18 PM

Well i don't plan to see it - and thats not because its an obvious object to direct hate against as an avatar fan. But i was never really into the Alice world, hell i only know that a character is names the mad hatter... and then alice.. im oblivious to the rest ( not anymore since i have seen the trailer like 10 times before avatar startet ) but... :p i was until avatar came into the theaters ;)

Alice in Wonderland was a fun movie to watch. There were a few parts that get tiresome such as every time there is a "period" film the feisty girl seems to hate corsets and must make some kind of comment about it (ie. Little Women and Pirates of the Caribbean). Other than that, it was enjoyable :).

SullyJake1 03-21-2010 11:51 PM

it was really slow...and i didnt think it was the worst thing i have seen but kinda close

Lyra 03-22-2010 08:20 AM

actually. ive just been to watch it again, and im breathtaken, the more you watch it the better it becomes <3

Woodsprite 03-22-2010 09:12 AM

Just watched it again... in my room. ;) You're right, Ninat! I loved it even more the fourth time! :D

Skxawng 03-24-2010 10:54 PM

Saw it today at the Imax, in the same seat as the last time I was there (Guess what I was seeing :) ). It's nothing exciting...Found it quite boring with a few funny bits tbh

Stanley_9875 03-29-2010 06:01 AM

It was... alright. It was pretty good, though I don't feel like Tim Burton really expressed his mind in it. It could've been way more dream-like and disturbing and such like the book, but it was pretty good.

Na'vi taw'ite 03-29-2010 01:07 PM

I took my best friend to see it in IMAX; I felt I owed him this because he's always been there for me (and more so in the last month). He was really, REALLY looking forward to seeing it.

We both left the theater rather unimpressed. He said it was okay but nothing he'd ever see again or buy on disk.

Of note: after only three weeks into its release, Alice has been relegated to just one show a day at our local IMAX, with the release of How to Train Your Dragon.

Fosus 03-29-2010 03:15 PM

It was a good movie, and the "Wonderland's" forest reminded me of Pandora sometimes :P except that the CGI was nowhere near the reality of Avatar. I did enjoy the movie, but the story was so fast and weird it was difficult to put yourself in the place of any character. There were no very-emotional scenes/moments to cry for or feel the happiness of any character.

Yes it was a good entertainment, but did not make me cry, laugh or blow my mind like Avatar did.

Gunny 03-29-2010 04:37 PM

I didnt really like it much. Though this could be because I went in with very high expectations. I am a pretty big Tim Burton fan, even more of a Danny Elfman fan!!! Yet I have not liked some of his more recent works like the willy wonka remake, and with AIW I did not feel this was one of his strongest works.

I will take my classics like Beetlejuice and Nightmare before Christmas :D

Ateyo 03-29-2010 06:09 PM

I didnīt see it yet, anyway anything that competes with AVATAR is unwelcome

Aw come on. :(

I kinda went in with 0 expectations (probably why I liked it so much afterward). I don't know why I loved it so much though... Maybe I'm just a sucker for child stories (i.e. Peter Pan (2003 ver.) actually made me cry; I'm in love with the Narnia series; etc.).

Gunny 03-29-2010 10:59 PM

I dont think I liked it as much also partially due to growing up with the classics of these movies they are remaking. Though originally I though, AIW is such an out there story to begin with Burton should really make this amazing. In the end I left let down a tad :(

Dreamwalker 03-30-2010 02:13 AM

I don't want to see it. I might see it eventually, but it looks...strange lol.
I just remember really loving the old cartoon as a kid and I feel like watching this is going to ruin that, because it honestly looked sort of creepy on the previews. :p

I was feeling sort of unsure about the whole thing too because of the previews, but the previews really don't do the movie justice (like the "Stardust" trailer). Sure, the movie is absolutely strange, but I'm sure anyone would agree, whether it was liked or not that the trailers and previews just weren't... what it was.

...If you adored the cartoon a lot and are expecting this to be the same, don't bother seeing it (it isn't even based off "Alice In Wonderland", rather its sequel by the same author).
