> Uhmm... Sorry to spoil some of the fun, but IMAX won't be releasing the extended version... The extra 6 minutes go over the time limit IMAX reels can support. The sources are from an email sent from IMAX themselves.

Unfortunately we will be unable to screen it at IMAX because we simply cannot fit any extra film on the platter. Being such a long film (and such large film stock) our reel unit cannot accommodate any extra length, it was at full capacity with Avatar v1.
> This was only ONE email. If I were you, I'd email them as well to confirm that.

Ah yes, I remember this. I think this is 100% correct. Oh well.

Still get to see it in 3D. Not that 3D makes Avatar any better.

Another reason why this trailer isn't authentic :(
But yes, Arthur is right. The IMAX has a maximum limit on the length of a movie, which is 2.75 hours. Add on top of that that 3D has two reels for the two camera lenses, which means Avatar already uses twice as much film as any other movie, 26 miles each reel iirc, weighing in at ~250kg each

WOW! 26 miles of Avatar.

"How long is your trip gonna be?"
"Oh it's approximately 7 Avatars long."
"Sweet so about 182 miles?"
"Yup."

But then again...

We were sold out of our IMAX performances right up to the moment until they were contractually obligated to switch to Alice in Wonderland… Clearly, it wasn’t market forces directly; it was the availability of theaters. " In other words, look for it to be in lots of 3D theaters including IMAX.

^True again, but the last line doesn't necessarily refer to the extended version. Perhaps the regular movie will show again in Imax, and select other theaters will show the extended.

Im probably repeating others here but does anyone know if the re-release is only American theaters or are they going to be showing it again in Europe too.

It will most likely be a world-wide re-release. A little more than 70% of Avatar's gross is from world-wide ticket sales, so I find it very unlikely it would be re-released only in America.

I still can't wait... I only have RealD 3D around here anyway, and DEFINITELY DO WANT the extra footage :D

ZitaX 06-11-2010 02:34 AM

Hmm, wonder how much the re-release is gonna gross. Do you guys think its gonna go over 3 billion with the re-release gross included?

Almost 100% guaranteed it will go over $3 Billion. It only needs to earn $271,186,948 more to pass $3 billion. I think it's safe to say, yes it will go over $3 billion.

Sempu 06-11-2010 04:09 AM

More interesting to wonder whether it will go over $4 billion.
