HHHHHHHRRRRRRHHHHHHHHH
Perhaps this poll was simply meant to ask the question?
How do you want to be addressed. as male or female?
I don't think the original post intended to open such a can of worms!

Moco Loco 12-18-2011 11:14 PM

Well then it shouldn't have had "a little bit of both". It probably would've been best as two separate answers, since I would've gladly also picked Female :P

All aboard the fail poll.

Well I hate to say it, but you are mistaken. I was born a Hermaphrodite in 1950, when parents were given the power to choose the childs identity. "Daddy" was a Navy Carrier Pilot, and I was the first born child, so he chose "Male". Too bad he guessed WRONG, that is NOT what my genes say.
I did not know anything about my genetic coding till I was out of the Army, and 29 years old. I KNEW from the time that I was FOUR that I was a FEMALE, I didn't care WHAT my "plumbing" said, and at that time, I did NOT know that the scar in my Peritoneal area was not normal for a "Male"...
So I guess you can say that, at birth, I was a whole lot more than a "little" of both.

You have the XX chromosomes, but your "plumbing" was simply a biological defect. The rest of it worked correctly, and your biology did feminize your brain as was instructed by your genes. Suffice to say you were never a little bit of both, because it is impossible, in the same way it is impossible to be full and empty at the same time, because the body doesn't have multiple slots for multiple genders, because our species does not function that way. It's possible to be born female in a male body and the other way around, and while one may have the brain of a female and the "plumbing" of male, one still can't be both in the real sense of the word.

I think the whole sex/gender thing is really something that irritates my sense of order, rationality and semantics a bit too much.

Moco Loco 12-19-2011 05:26 AM

So basically, no one ever has any justification for the third answer? Fail poll indeed.

Niri Te 12-19-2011 05:57 AM

The ONLY reason that I am answering the last two posts, is because the last two posts are promoting a false reality. To put this as plainly as possible, I was born with BOTH sets of external genitalia. I do NOT simply have XX cromosomes, I have three, sometimes FOUR sex chromosomes, and I am NOT the only person born that way.

Aquaplant 12-19-2011 09:20 AM

So is it really possible for a human to be a working hermaphrodite? For example, in theory, being capable of making oneself pregnant?

I'm sorry if I'm promoting false information. I did not mean to be disrespectful or anything, but I haven't really heard that it's even possible to have more than two chromosomes, but in theory that would still be possible, because it doesn't really matter how many Xs and Ys one has, as long as there's at least one that makes the necessary changes. A female is still a female with only one X, but I think in order to be male one needs both the X and Y, because the human body is female by default, and the chromosomes decide will it develop into male or stay female.

The reason most genetic defects are more common among males is that if we receive a defective X from our mother, then we are unable to replace it as females can, because they get another X from the father.

There are those who are XXY.

Niri Te 12-19-2011 05:01 PM

You were not disrespectful at all Aquaplant, you were mearly trying to discuss something so that you might learn, and that is a good thing.
What Clark brought up is called "Kleinfelter's Syndrome" and is not all that rare.
The situation that I was born with is a more rare, and can get pretty bizarre.
Humans are not capable of impregnating themselves. I was born sterile, as I believe all of us that carry multiple groupings of sex chromosomes are.

Aquaplant 12-19-2011 05:20 PM

Well it's a good thing you understand that my enthusiasm for order combined with lack of proper knowledge can lead to something like that.

This is what I was sort of going for when I said that humans don't really have the ability to be hermaphrodites in the true sense of the word, because the way I see it, it doesn't matter what stuff one has downstairs if they are not functional. I guess nature is just trying to prevent the errors in genetic reproduction from stacking up by making people with such condition sterile, because I don't know what other inherent reason there would be, but then again I'm no biologist.

Human No More 12-19-2011 11:31 PM

It depends on the genetics - AFAIK then yes, every condition to do with the number of sex chromosomes causes infertility, but some related to missing or extra copies of other chromosomes are inheritable.

Theorist 12-24-2011 12:56 AM

I wonder how many of the people who voted "a little bit of both" are male vs female...

Madara Uchiha 08-24-2013 02:38 PM

I chose "a little bit of both" just because it is true when you're in the early stages of development inside your mother's womb that the default if you will "sex" is female. We were all girls at one time! Males is the genetic mutation from that "default." So I was born male but like all of you; started out as "female." Isn't that a fun fact or did I just confuse you all? ;)
