What's wrong with The Beatles?

moonbeam 05-22-2015 03:13 AM

I just realized something. You know how in "The Wizard of Oz", the Scarecrow is the first person Dorothy meets in Oz, and he's looking for his brain? And at the end, she says that she'll miss him most of all? It's because he's meant to foreshadowing that the whole adventure is in her mind. Brain=Mind.

moonbeam 07-06-2015 03:17 PM

So, I saw "Jurassic World" last week, and it pretty much reawakened my love of dinosaurs. And it also made me remember this Brontosaurus plushie I had when I was real young, and I miss it a lot. Here's a picture of it. Mine was purple though.

So, has anyone played around wit the new "Deep Dream" program stuff? The images are insane. Feeding Avatar stills into it is fun as well.

That's crazy looking. Everything is turning into a face.

Cyvaris 07-12-2015 05:07 PM

Yes, it's a series of filters revealing how a computer "sees" images. Shortest version, we've trained a computer to tell us what is a picture of a "dog" by showing it millions of pictures we've told it are a "dog" and now it sees dogs everywhere.

Yes...I think Avatar works well with this.

First full non-stitched image of Earth since the Blue Marble picture taken by Apollo 17 astronauts. Looking at this, I'd like to quote Carl Sagan.

Quote:

On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there – on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.

The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that in glory and triumph they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of this pixel on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner. How frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds. Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the universe, are challenged by this point of pale light. Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity – in all this vastness – there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves.

The Earth is the only world known, so far, to harbor life. There is nowhere else, at least in the near future, to which our species could migrate. Visit, yes. Settle, not yet. Like it or not, for the moment, the Earth is where we make our stand. It has been said that astronomy is a humbling and character-building experience. There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known.

Well, that's the end of Avatar-Forums. Bloody good while it lasted.

I wonder how much Lon is asking for the domain. Also, this isn't the first time that AF has gone dark; I'm sure it will pop back up eventually.

It was going to go down eventually. I'd never donated money to anything that wasn't a charity before. Not a single go fund me or patreon or anything like that. But I gave $20 to AF once. That wasn't the kind of thing I was going to be able to do on a regular basis and that forum didn't have a large enough active userbase to support it via donations over the long run. It would have been one thing if Avatar had been able to develop an expanded universe capable of attracting that kind of audience, but we don't even have a sequel yet and we won't for years.

It was nice to be able to think of myself as an "Avatar-forums original" though. I hope the regular posters there can find their way here.

Human No More 07-29-2015 10:41 PM

It's sad, and I do hope something can be done to at least preserve all the history there. It may have gone very inactive (as have all the communities to some extent...) recently, but it has been around a long time and there is a lot of the early days of so much of the Avatar community there.

Ja'k Dawsiin 07-30-2015 03:01 AM

i often wonder why i didn't use Ja'k Dawsiin as my username here, too much redbull and stacks of broken keyboards i suppose. it is a sad day indeed, as i spent nearly 5 years there. sad to see that history go.....*man tears*

Wind12 07-30-2015 09:48 PM

It is a sad time indeed :( AF will always have a place in my heart, but I'm glad we still have places to come together. :)

iron_jones 07-31-2015 04:38 PM

I was never a fan of AF... I mean, I was until they banned me...

Marvellous Chester 07-31-2015 04:43 PM

^ It's entirely possible that you wouldn't have been banned if you hadn't behaved like a provocative little mong ;)

Not that I am judging you.

Well, a tad. But no more than is healthy.

Ja'k Dawsiin 08-01-2015 04:00 AM

hey Stag, Ja'k here...where's the like button?! my mom's name was hoffman and my dad's name was channing-cook, but damn if i don't love me some European sense of humor lol. you get some of that, dammit. :-)

Ja'k Dawsiin 08-01-2015 04:35 AM

i shall always miss AF...it's where i ended up after my first mesmerizing viewing of the Avatar Experience.

XD

Hehe, no like button here my friend ;) But feel free to buy me a pint!

Tell me good sir, are you on Skype? We have a bunch of AF members in a group chat on there but it is currently suffering from a distinct lack of Neytiri venerating. If you'd like to join the group and solve this little problem for us, could you send me a PM with your Skype name please :)

Téyan 08-01-2015 03:26 PM

It's a shame AVATAR FORUMS went dark again. I wasn't active in discussions for two years, but I did login every now and then to catch up on things. I'm sure AF will return. I just hope the database isn't lost if it doesn't. Lots of memories there.

I became aware of AF going dark yesterday because many of the AVATAR related photo searches were photos that originated from AF so there are a lot of broken links to photos on Google and Bing searches now.

Alan 08-02-2015 11:54 AM

Aye...well, its a shame AF has gone into cryo for the moment. Definitely a lot of heart-felt discussion on there, certainly from the early days. Hopefully all that is still safe.

I must admit I kinda stopped donating a bit back for various reasons, one of which life got too busy and I found my time on the forums bacame somewhat limited, as it has here too. But, having come back from AvatarMeet, my cup has been re-filled and hopefully I'll be a little bit more active - besides, I've got the meet up video to do.

Alan

Ja'k Dawsiin 08-02-2015 05:28 PM

looking forward to the video, Alan:)

Eltu 08-04-2015 01:24 AM

Always an exciting wait! :D

Wind12 08-04-2015 08:36 AM

AF may be gone for now, but as long as we stick together, then it will never truly die :) but I will miss my internet kelku for sure.

And Alan, can't wait to see your video ma tsmukan :D

Marvellous Chester 08-04-2015 04:42 PM

We should bring the divine essence of Avatar-Forums to Tree-of-Souls. Unite the clans, and all that uplifting bollocks! :D

Wind12 08-04-2015 08:31 PM

Sounds like a plan to me ;) :)

Right now sitting on my txìm again before work. :p

Ja'k Dawsiin 08-14-2015 02:16 AM

i hope you'll will forgive me, but i am probably gonna be bumping a lot of old threads, not meaning to uselessly necro-post, but we are gonna liven up ToS, now that AF has gone extinct sadly. some of the older threads look interesting, and you can rest assured i will post something worthwhile before i raise them from the dead.:)

I'd say right now, necroposting is totally fine - we can use the activity! :)

Wind12 08-14-2015 03:59 AM

I added a couple of threads that I made from AF that I decided to copy to my device a while back when I saw the clouds gathering.

Had a bit of wutso, and watching the KC royals on and off, and looking through different weather sites, and dropping into ToS. A typical night off of work. :p :)

Disco Scratch 08-15-2015 12:55 AM

I'm currently honoring AF by flying my AF signature here, but eventually I will have to let it go. What fonts are used in the ToS logo? Or even better... Is there a template available?

Eltu 08-15-2015 01:04 AM

Used to be, but the links are likely dead by now - I'll see if I can dig up the old source files, though I'll be refining the logo soon anyway upon which there'll be much better assets to use :)

Disco Scratch 08-15-2015 01:11 AM

Sounds great! :)

TireaAean 08-15-2015 05:10 PM

AF is BACK!!

@AvatarForums just tweeted moments ago. Looks like Lon put AF on a new server, completely restored, now with no ads!

Clarke 08-15-2015 07:05 PM

Quick, someone mirror it! :P
