James Cameron CNN's Most Intriguing Person of the Day

If anyone is as crazy about the news as I am, you might have caught James Cameron on CNN. He was named "Most Intriguing Person of the Day" on Rick's List. Every day someone is chosen out of all the headlines to fill such title and today Cameron was chosen for helping an Iroquois lacrosse team. The team from Canada is scheduled to play in the world championships in the UK, but was denied entry based on their Native American Passports. Since the UK refused to recognize the team's papers, the team has been grounded in New York, costing them 25,000 dollars a day in hotel and dining expenses. In response, Cameron donated 50,000 dollars to help pay while (hopefully) a solution is found.

Reporting live with BBC News, Caveman.

CyanRachel 07-16-2010 09:19 PM

Wow -- this is awesome! Way to go, JC!

stdout 07-16-2010 09:53 PM

$25000 a day for accommodation and food?!?!?!

Eltu 07-16-2010 11:48 PM

CNN should die.

That's all I have to say in the matter.

Dreaming Of Pandora 07-17-2010 01:17 AM

JC = God

Are you referring to what CNN said about PAD back in January?

Woodsprite 07-17-2010 07:27 AM

When I saw the thread title I immediately thought, "Intriguing person... of the day?? Why not month, or year?" Must be a show thing or something (I don't watch CNN).

But good going for Cameron. As for CNN, they only report what they want to, so who's to say they aren't reporting something even better than Cameron's help for the Iriquois?

...Or something worse? I just don't trust CNN in any way.

Empty Glass 07-17-2010 07:34 AM

I stopped trusting CNN after their PAD story.

Eltu 07-17-2010 10:23 AM

I made CNN my mortal enemies after their PAD story.

*mutters*

caveman 07-17-2010 04:09 PM

Really? I didn't. In fact I love CNN. Just because there was a story about PAD a while ago doesn't mean much to me. Actually I just watched the video and I thought it wasn't that bad. It could have been a lot worse, they could have slammed it rather than tried to understand it. And any time they laughed a little at it, I completely understand. The idea of getting really depressed after a movie is going to sound ridiculous to the rest of the world. In fact, it still seems ridiculous to myself.

I only watch CNN. AC 360 is my favorite thing to watch these days. He keeps at stories most stations choose to forget. While the rest of the world has moved on from Haiti, he went back to see just how little has changed. He puts pressure on the government and BP to do more, not that it always works.

Anyways, I don't distrust CNN because one story about PAD. I'm curious where you guys are coming from...

Eltu 07-17-2010 04:11 PM

caveman, read the PAD story again.

Yeah do. Your opinion of CNN might just take a U-turn.

caveman 07-17-2010 07:12 PM

Audiences experience 'Avatar' blues - CNN.com

THIS^?

You're angry about that? I thought it was a great article.

You have to understand that just about everyone who sees this is going to not understand the idea of depression from a movie. I wouldn't have maybe a year ago. So that's how the article starts off - skeptical. But then more opinions, your opinions, are weighed in and the article shifts to understanding. Then, once its understood why someone would feel PAD, it shifts again to helping, talking about the importance of having these kinds of communities/support groups.

I must be missing something???

Eltu 07-17-2010 07:14 PM

That article literally destroyed my relations with 70% of all people I know. No joke.

So yes. I believe you are missing something.

I am very sorry. Now I understand, well, I can only imagine having everyone around you find out and leaving you. Again, I'm sorry. That certainly is more than reason to hate CNN. It didn't occur to me that using your name would obviously cause relationships to fall apart and such. I failed to connect the two.

Looking back, it is a real shame. I feel terrible now. Using your name was a mistake. Although you and others here would probably argue, I don't think that was the intention of CNN - to ruin your reputation. I think the intention of the article was to inform, provide insight to those who were about to bash it, and ultimately give help to anyone who was experiencing PAD. That was just a really bad call using your name. Real names and specific information is a big no-no in news. They should have asked to use your real name, or just by default use only your user name or a made up name.

Again, I'm sorry. I keep my forum life to myself for that reason. Nobody knows I think and discuss Avatar everyday. It would be really hard if everyone around me suddenly knew. I just hope that the 30% remaining friends are the good ones, the closest friends. You're going to college this year? Next year? Either way I hope you meet a lot of great people who wouldn't judge you from something like this. You don't deserve anymore break ups, only good people. God I'm sorry man.

Eltu 07-17-2010 07:53 PM

You are right. Their INTENTION was not to ruin my reputation. They simply did not care if it happened or not.

Posting this kind of information leads to more viewers, which leads to more money for them. Simple as that. And for that, I have lost all my respect for CNN.

And it was only the start. Soon the news spread to other news stations, newspapers, magazines, forum boards and news websites. Eventually Sweden's largest newspaper caught up on the story and... you can imagine the outcome.

Dreaming Of Pandora 07-18-2010 12:15 AM

Actually the BBC wanted to use me in their article about PAD. But this was after the CNN article so I turned down.

Human No More 07-19-2010 07:27 AM

I was asked for somewhere too... but I said only if they didn't use my name. Never heard back from them lol

What CNN did was really inexcusable.

I really did not interpret a single word of understanding there. It's 'hey look, these people are different', the same as far too much in life :(

I think that's because of your perspective. You have a perspective of being a member of such forums, and being one who experienced PAD first hand. You're going to look at it and think "hey they're bashing us because we're different". They are certainly not bashing us. They are trying to understand us despite what the average viewer of this article thinks.

Now, what they did with Eltu was a big mistake. They shouldn't be using real names on something that would cause such repercussions. Regardless....

The article doesn't bash you or anyone here for being different. No, instead it tries understanding why you would feel depressed, and what you could do about it. That's why they had a therapist comment on it, and why they talked about building these online communities.

"The bright side is that for Hill and others like him....becoming a part of a community of like-minded people on an online forum has helped them emerge from the darkness."

Sure, it may seem like CNN is just saying "hey these people are different", but it definitely also serves as a portal to these communities. Seriously, I bet half the people on these forums joined after seeing the article. I know I did, and without it, God, who knows where I'd be. This article saved my life from a complete emotional meltdown.

Don't forget that that Croatian news site misinterpreted the CNN's article (Croatians don't know english that well) and announced that Eltu committed suicide... :P

What?

Eltu 07-20-2010 12:28 PM

*thinks of Stan from South Park*

- What?

And yeah, it happened. SEVERAL croatian magazines (guess the news spread between them) wrote:

"After watching Avatar, 17-year old swedish Ivar Hill decided to commit suicide."

Apparently, they talked about the "incident" in CROATIAN SCHOOLS.

Dreaming Of Pandora 07-20-2010 06:30 PM

Wow... lol ^_^

Empty Glass 07-20-2010 06:44 PM

OK, that's really weird...

Tsyal Makto 07-20-2010 11:10 PM

Um...holy ****.

Oh, and I've given up on CNN, too (and pretty much all mainstream media). If it wasn't the PAD debacle that did it, it was Lou Dobbs going off the deep end. Though Anderson Cooper is pretty good; the last true reporter IMO.

Human No More 07-20-2010 11:23 PM

Yeah... one of them later posted an apology, but AFAIK the others haven't even acknowledged their mistake.

Eltu 07-21-2010 10:34 AM

Nope, they haven't. There are still magazines out there that announce I am dead, along with my real name, age, and location.

Woodsprite 07-21-2010 10:48 AM

Ok this is something you just have to show me, because I am all eyes now.

Eltu 07-21-2010 10:54 AM

As you want...

Here's one:
Film Avatar poti

"So after a look at 'Avatar', the seventeen year old Swede Ivar Hill decided to commit suicide."
(Google Translate)

Here's another:
Vecernji.hr - ‘Ne mogu više biti na Zemlji.

"After viewing the film "avatar", 17-year-old Swede Ivar Hill decided on suicide."
(Google Translate)

I spoke to Thorinair (he's croatian) - and he can confirm that the translator is correct.

Helicoradian 07-21-2010 11:06 AM

Wow, didn't know the media wrote that about you. Never understood why you were so upset about it, but I can see why now.

Edit:
Have you asked them to correct what they said about you?

Woodsprite 07-21-2010 11:10 AM

Wow... I just... there are no words.

But this one made me laugh:

In just a few of the online forums that deal with [the film], depression caused by viewing "Avatar" was recorded by more than a thousand entries so that administrators were forced to open additional discussions.
I lol'd at "administrators were forced". :D

What's incredibly hilarious to me is the fact that they just mention your "suicide" as a passover inconvenience, as if it didn't matter much. They just happen to go along the lines of, "Oh, well this random guy (who we'll never mention again in the article) decided to commit suicide after watching Avatar", as if they could care less, even if you really did kill yourself. They even got a "professor" to comment!

:D

caveman 07-22-2010 02:17 AM

You should send in a job application to those magazine publication companies. Just to mess with them. Or maybe a letter, or something. Man, you could have a lot of fun with just screwing around with them. Pretend your a ghost...

Thorinair 07-22-2010 09:13 AM

Yep, those articles are freaking hilarious, especially the one from Vecernji.hr where a psychologist commented on it... I lol'd

Seems that they removed about wearing yellow pullovers... :'(
