Computer Picture Thread!

I looked around and couldn't find one of these threads. There's usually one on every forum I've been on. :P

Yeah, post pics of your Computer! Lets see what brilliant machines you have, unlike me. xD Then again I wouldn't say mine is bad tbh. :)
It has 2.5 GB RAM which is enough for me, oh, and btw my desk is NEVER this clean... Just so you know. :P (Gave it a cleanup just for this post :D )

To be honest, most of the time I sit cross legged on my chair. :P

Yeah, I could do with a better desk, that one is dated... There used to be a slider underneath which my keyboard was on but now I've had to put my keyboard on top of the whole thing because a long while ago it broke off... >.< *facepalm*

Well, I finally got my room cleaned up enough to take pics. And I re-arranged. Brought my PS3 and 360 up and hooked them up to my moniter, brought my stereo up and hooked it up to my PS3 and PC. It makes it really hard not to watch Avatar, but I said I won't till I see the re-release.

I really like this setup

Gunny 08-09-2010 08:09 AM

Yall are really making me want to attempt to build myself a desktop as I am really wanting one and just dont really feel like going through a store cuz if I do I would probably end up with something overpriced like an apple XD

What is with a dual monitor though? Just to multi task?

Gunny 08-10-2010 05:17 PM

hahaha!

How expensive is it to build your own computer? The one I would build wont be anything serious as I am not a PC gamer.

Human No More 08-11-2010 12:42 AM

How long is a cable? :P

Really depends on what hardware you use... Cheap hardware will probably end up a few hundred overall, or if you go for the absolute best in everything plus stuff like watercooling, you're looking at thousands :P

Generally though, I've found building your own to be marginally cheaper than buying, plus it's a fun thing to do and you're getting exactly what you want, often with much nicer looks. Also lots of scope for case mods which I guess you might be interested in with your interest in cars :)

My cameraphone sucks.
http://42-7.ath.cx/pc.jpg
Upgraded/Changed parts so often that specs change monthly, mostly because of RMA's and I fried my original CPU overclocking. I'm not sure how much exactly it costs anymore, because I spent the money over a large amount of time. I'm guessing around an even $700 if you don't include replaced/out of warranty components. Now everything works, haven't had a BSOD or freeze in 2 months. :)
Specs:
Motherboard: Asus M4A785TD-V EVO
Graphics: MSI Twin-Frozr N275GTX (basically a GTX275 with more robust vreg's and a huge heatsink), overclocked to 700c,1565s,1300m hooked up to a crappy 720p 26" TV.
Graphics 2: A GT210 that was on sale, couldn't pass it up for $20. use it to run my 17" CRT
CPU: AMD Athalon II X2 240 (OC'd from 2.8GHz to 3.81@1.525V. Got it on sale for $55 after I fried my Phenom II)
Memory: Crucial Ballistix 1600 2x2GB
HDD: 250GB Seagate 7200.12 (faster than some 10k drives, and I don't need much storage because everything is on my server.)
PSU: Corsair TX850W (Don't want to go cheap on the PSU, my first one died, this is the replacement. Don't buy Rosewill PSU's)
CPU cooler: Xigmatech d984 92mm heatsink (sanded to mirror finish, with AS5 thermal paste. keeps my cpu 28-50C, cheap.)
Rosewill "Blackbone" case and generic LG DVD burner complete the package.

Nice cable tidying job :)

Mine is a lot better than my old PC's but still looks a bit messy compared to some :P

Edit: realise I never posted my actual spec.

Phenom X4 965 Black Edition
Asus M4A79T Deluxe
GTX 285
4GB Corsair Dominator (will upgrade to 8 some time in the future since I have 2 free slots)
1.5TB and 500GB Seagate Barracudas
Corsair TX650W
Antec 902

Got a decent enough overclock on it, all nice and stable, temps hit maximum of about 60 for the CPU under full load.

Nice specs, finally someone else posted a decent list. :) If I had another $60 to spend I definitely would have gone with that CPU, unlocked multipliers to aid overclocking (my "fsb" is at 330, no joke :D), but that CPU was kind of a "holy s***!!!... Mom! I'm going to the store..." type emergency, fried CPU makes me sad.
Good call on the Seagate drives (fast!), I have a server full of 7200.11's (the infamous 750GB ones) and had one fail on me, but a 5 minute firmware update fixed it. Other than that, no failures. And I have a total of 6 Seagate branded drives.
GTX 285 is good, but it's a space heater. as are most NVidia high-ends (with exception of the 460). I always put aftermarket heatsinks of some kind on my cards after I had a 7900 die due to a bad fan.
Antec 902... dude... case envy. :D Mine's not bad, sturdy enough to haul to a friend's house, but the Antec 900 series cases are built like tanks. I bought all this hardware and it was in the mail and a day later I was like "derp. forgot a case." so I got the cheapest okay-looking one on Newegg. And I massively overkill'd on the PSU, I was sooo sick and tired of BSOD's... now I can 100% rule out the PSU, and it will probably be fine through a few rebuilds.

Oh, and the cable tidying job? Well, that PSU looks like Cthulu is growing out the back. There's about 1.5cm of clearance behind the motherboard tray. I spent more time trying to get all the clips on the back panel in than I did putting in the PSU. :D

What's your overclock and at what voltage? CPU cooler?

Human No More 08-22-2010 04:30 AM

Just 3600 at the moment, I don't want to risk killing it because I can NOT afford a new CPU (yeah, I know, a CPU like that deserves to go higher but I don't have watercooling and those chips start to chuck out a LOT of heat when you up the voltage...), cooler is a Freezer 64 Pro. Truthfully don't have a huge need for more though, games get great framerates, hitting the limit in games with one, general performance is probably HDD limited like most PCs rather than CPU (damn SSDs being so ridiculously expensive :P )

josie20 08-22-2010 05:17 AM

I've never used a computer before. I don't even know anyone who owns one.

Sight Unseen 08-22-2010 05:22 AM

Games don't generally use all 4 cores anyway. Crysis runs the same on a Athlon II X2 as it does on a X4 at the same speed, for example. But then again, 2 cores isn't quite enough, as the OS likes a core to itself... and we all know 3-core processors were just a bad idea. I think your performance bottleneck is memory, and graphics. The 2xx series is outdated, and a 460 with 1.5x the performance of the 285 can be had for $~230. (next purchase for me :) )
And as for memory, The HDD speed doesn't make a difference, as most games dump data in bulk from the HDD to the RAM during loading, and use the data solely from RAM once loaded, and as you already have plenty of ram (for now), and data isn't being swapped to virtual memory on the HDD, a SSD wouldn't improve performance much.
A SSD wound basically speed up boot times and game loading times BEFORE play, but thats about it. The reason I say RAM is your bottleneck is that AM3 uses 2 channels and LGA1366 has 3. Thats a 60% faster memory access rate just from architecture alone, not counting that i7's are mostly faster than anything stock from AMD. That said, you could up the voltage of your memory to the max listed on the spec sheet and use the timings listed on the RAM itself. Do Not use "auto". From experience, I get a good 5-10 fps extra in crysis on very high by setting these manually. What would probably give you the best benifit/time ratio is, if you OC'd through multiplier only, to raise the FSB a good 15MHz and back down on the multiplier by .5x, and raising your VDDNB to about 1.3V. This will OC your CPU's built in MMU and increase your RAM's data rate without increasing you clock rate, but you may have to step down on the Memory/FSB ratio as well. This gave me an extra 5 fps, but the gameplay was much much smoother than this small jump in frame rate can account for.
