Was I the only person who didn't know...

...that Eltu was featured in a CNN article?

Audiences experience 'Avatar' blues - CNN.com

I think so 0.0 lol

Old topic is old.

Woodsprite 08-06-2010 08:36 AM

Yeah, I guess... whenever the subject comes up, Eltu gets all serious.

Helicoradian 08-06-2010 09:08 AM

That article brings back some (not so good) memories :(

Dreaming Of Pandora 08-06-2010 09:46 AM

Yes, yes you are. :P
Eltu mightn't like this topic cropping up again also. XD

First off, I have nothing against discussing this - rather the opposite, as discussing it with you makes me feel better about it - it's great to know that I do have friends out there. ;)

Secondly, Josie, yes - among the old members you're probably the only one who didn't know. :P

And third, well, I guess I should sum up the whole story, to avoid any misunderstandings.

It began when I got a PM from a CNN journalist on AF - because of some posts I had written regarding PAD. At the time, I did not know it was CNN, only "some journalist".
So she asked me some questions, I answered them, and suddenly it was on CNN's front page, complete with my FULL NAME, my AGE, my LOCATION and my OCCUPATION. All this without ANY permission given by me, at all.

Then, one thing led to another, and eventually this was all over the internet. Other magazines, web forums, blogs - at one time, my email address got out on a 4chan thread, and I got hate mails for a while. (thank Eywa for gmail's mail filter!)

The news also spread to several Croatian news magazines, and they misinterpreted the whole article. They actually wrote "After watching Avatar, 17-year old swede Ivar Hill decided to commit suicide."

DECIDED TO COMMIT SUICIDE. Just... wow. Thorinair, who is Croatian, said that they even discussed this in Croatian schools. Talk about blowing things out of proportion...

Eventually, Sweden's largest web (and physical) newspaper Aftonbladet got hold of the story, and of course, they published what I said along with my real name, age, location and occupation. That's where every single person I knew IRL got hold of the story. Half the people I know literally thought I wanted to commit suicide.

So yeah... things were pretty hard for a while, and even now people I know mention it from time to time. But at least I have cleared things up with the people I know, and they don't really think I am going to commit suicide anymore... hopefully :P And thanks to all the support from AF and now ToS, I look back at that whole mess with a smile. :)

So yeah - that's the short version. :P

That's extremely bad you know, for a newspaper to publish all your personal information WITHOUT letting you know they were going to do it is just wrong...

And the Croation newspapers... *facepalm*

If I recall correctly, the Croatian newspaper later corrected themselves :P (Luckily, I suppose ^^)

Xynth, regarding the croatian newspapers:

One of them corrected themselves after I sent them an angry email from the other side. :D

There are still several others who still claim I am dead, though. :P

What, they don't believe in ghosts and their hunger for blood, vengeance etc.?

josie20 08-06-2010 03:47 PM

Wow...Eltu, I'm sorry to hear about all of that. I also apologize for bringing up an old topic. I obviously don't have time to read every thread/news article ever written. :P So yeah...delete thread if you want.

Eltu 08-06-2010 04:06 PM

You misunderstood me there :P

So it's no problem. ;)

I understand that you didn't mind talking about this. But my impression was that no-one else felt that way. But hey, if you don't mind, and no-one else minds, then I don't mind, either. :)

This article was posted before I ever joined the forums, and I don't usually go read through old threads(assuming there were threads about this). I think I did have the chance to read this article in like February or March, but I didn't because I had PAD and I didn't want to read it because I made the assumption that they wouldn't take it serious and make fun of it. I still get angry when I see people make fun of PAD. Even if I had read it back then, I still had no idea who you were(no offense :P)

It's actually kind of funny(in a way), I found this article because I was doing a search for a blog some "psychologist" wrote about people at AF and how they are crazy. :P
