If you count out Avatar, here's my list:

- The Matrix (the whole trilogy). AMAZING depth, wonderful movie qualities. The best of the best.

- District 9. Incredibly well made, and it truly shows the darker sides of humanity.

- Star Wars (all of them). Nothing to say here. :D

...and a thousand or so more, that I don't have the energy to write down :P

The most recent science fiction movie I've seen (apart from Avatar SE) was Cargo. It was pretty good.

Besides Avatar...

The Abyss - but you gotta watch the 'special edition' version, it turns a great movie into an astoundingly great movie.

...and 2001: A Space Odyssey, which is endlessly great to think and ponder about.

Love the music in both of 'em too!

Here's what I'll say about GITS. I think the 1995 movie was their best but I prefer the newer series and the new Major Motoko Kusanagi, don't like the old Kusanagi. Also I prefer the change they made to a few characters: Batou has slight changes to him, Togusa has a better voice actor, Ishikawa has gotten a much better voice actor: the guy looked 40 and sounded like 20. Aramaki is drawn slightly different, which I prefer.

Their first TV series (Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex) invented the Stand Alone Complex, a new form of mass of individuals revolting resultant of one single event that spurred it all. It has already happened once on the internet.

Their second series (Ghost In The Shell Stand Alone Complex: Solid State Society) follows on from the aforementioned series. There is also a movie that comes after GITS: SAS, I suggest you see them.
