"The Ultimate Fan's guide to Avatar" on sale.

I just stumbled on this when I clicked the link to the making of avatar link to Amazon on AvatarPrime.net.

Here is the link:

The Ultimate Fan's Guide to Avatar, James Cameron's epic movie

I want this so bad because I wan't to know the relationships between Avatar and many other movies:D (Esp. Blade Runner:)).

What do you guys think?

Human No More 09-16-2010 12:36 AM

Hmm, I'll get that when I have some money... Still need to get The Science of Avatar too... :S

Txum_kali'weya 09-16-2010 01:31 AM

Is that one out yet?? I haven't heard anything from it for a while. Definitely do want it though.

Elyannia 09-16-2010 03:14 AM

Looks bad imo =/ Its mostly about making everything in the movie into something sexual...

Woodsprite 09-16-2010 03:53 AM

Absolutely DO NOT WANT.

Read the reviews. This is not a good buy, from what I've read so far. Pretty much all the people who liked the book were not die-hard fans like us, and had no idea about anything related to Avatar outside the actual film. There are grammar and spelling errors "strewn throughout" according to many (not just Amazon, btw), including a point where he, according to one review, "...calls Jake "Jack" in the same sentence he says that he had 6 months before the bulldozers arrive (it's 3 months - which he gets right later)."

According to at least three of the Amazon reviewers (and there are only 5 reviews so far, 2 of which are the same exact review, so it's really just 4 reviews), the author somehow has the "belief that everything has some sort of sexual connotation." "Beastiality" is mentioned throughout as if it were the norm, and references to things and places that were never referred to as such abound throughout (like the "Well of Souls"...?). 3 of the 4 also care to mention in so many words, "It seems like the author was watching a different movie, or maybe saw a different cut."

Another thing makes me wonder: what's so "ultimate" about this "Ultimate Guide" if it has over 80 pages less than the survival guide?

I'll pass.

Yeah, I steered clear of this one. Has 'quick unofficial cash-in' written all over it. Looking forward to Stephen Baxter's book though, and the Making of Avatar book, and JC's Avatar novel...:D

you don't know what the well of souls is?!

-.-

Thorinair 09-16-2010 06:54 AM

Looking at the cover that doesn't have anything to do with Avatar and looking at comments.... No thanks :P

tawtute_tsamsiyu 09-16-2010 07:04 AM

I bought the book a while ago and I agree with Woodsprite. This is a waste of money that could be put towards better things. (Perhaps the re-release Bluray in November? :))

EDIT: Just to show how retarded this is... Somewhere around page 35 or so, the author thinks Mo'at is metaphorically raping Jake by inspecting his queue. Then a bit later, he goes on about hair secks for a page or so. Also: a few pages back, he talks about how Jake's eyes dilate when he makes tsaheylu with the direhorse is a metaphorical orgasm, and that Jake is commiting bestiality.

ROFLOL :xD:

Human No More 09-16-2010 01:26 PM

lol wut.

Thanks for the warning. Removed from todo list :)

(That said, to be fair, well of souls isn't actually wrong as it is referenced in background material... still no excuse for the rest of what I've heard in this thread though...)

Patrice Maire 09-16-2010 06:48 PM

Yeah, this looks like he jumped on the band wagon, went through the script, threw in some personal comparisons and just threw it out there before really checking details.

I'll wait for the Authorized and Official guide thank you very much.

Thorinair 09-16-2010 07:03 PM

Just get Survivalist's Guide... It's good enough :P

Rainbowhawk1993 09-16-2010 10:15 PM

Now that I read your reveiws, I problibly won't buy it. I'll just read a couple of pages of it if it's at "Barns and Noble" and see if it's crap.

Oh believe me, it's crap. I bought it despite the reviews on Amazon thinking that this book may have some key points of interest, but no. Not only does he insert his own ass-backwards ideas (metaphorical rape and orgasms), he does a terrible job at organizing it all. One minute he's discussing Avatar, the next - a book, and then he's discussing another movie seemingly unrelated to Avatar at all.

Absolutely! I picked that up in a B&N to look through it and wanted it badly! Same thing with the picture book. Now that I have money, I'll be going to get those.
There are pictures and information in the Survivalist Guide that was filmed but never included in the movie. Here's hoping that will be in the extras on the dvds.

More like "the ultimate avatar cash-in attempt".

Sorry, but if I had unlimited resources at my disposal, I would burn as many of these as I could.

Any book that attempts to appeal to a fanbase with "unauthorized" at the top is usually sh*t.

Drewan 09-18-2010 04:46 PM

One word for "writers" like that---BARF!!!:angry:

It's OFF of my Amazon list!!!!

Where??

Human No More 09-20-2010 03:33 PM

It doesn't :P
It's still canon - it's just written to give the impression that it's by a pro-Na'vi human group - which I'm really hoping will come into Avatar 2 somehow :)

Woodsprite 09-20-2010 11:57 PM

No really; I looked all over the book for anywhere where it could say "unauthorized" and didn't find anything. :P (I'm that concerned.) I really thought the writers got material from Cameron's sketches (remember Titanic? 'nough said) and notes he wrote, along with closely following the movie, and talking with Cameron himself... isn't that what they did?? :S

X.,.Pandora.,.X 09-21-2010 02:53 AM

The art of avatar (or whatever that book is) isn't that bad either.

Human No More 09-21-2010 08:33 PM

That's official (although in that case, non-canon in some of the content) though :)
