I think they can look OK, it's just that mine doesn't. Next year though...

Human No More 10-30-2010 02:33 PM

The premade costumes aren't that good... I haven't done all mine together yet as I'll be going out this evening. My tail isn't that great, next time I'm just going to buy the expensive one, I think, and ears failed :(

ISV Venture Star 10-30-2010 03:30 PM

I bought that tail, and it's great. Ears worked out OKish, but need a better way to attach them. Prosthetic didn't use, should have asked Kym Sainsbury what to do... next time though...

Woodsprite 10-30-2010 05:17 PM

As much as I cringe to say this... we need help from the make-up artist who worked on Ben Stiller. -.-

Nah, I think we can do better...

Those are awesome pics, great job on the stripes and the tail ;) The ears look pretty neat too.

Human No More 11-01-2010 03:44 AM

that's amazing :)

Tail looks great... mine wasn't that good :(

ISV Venture Star 11-01-2010 03:48 AM

I just wish I had lightened the body paint to match the tail... I thought the talc I used to dry the paint would lighten it, but it changed back to the original shade after a while. Next time, I guess.

Tsyal Makto 11-01-2010 04:36 AM

Freakin' awesome, dude! One of the best. :)

Nulkrr'zo 11-01-2010 05:12 AM

looks great! whatd you use for paint?

ISV Venture Star 11-01-2010 05:20 AM

Homemade pax

Woodsprite 11-01-2010 07:13 AM

That IS one of the best... actually, I'd say THE best I've ever seen. Ears could use a little work to look more realistic, and the queue could be a bit longer, but everything else is just spot on; I could never top it. That's brilliant, what you did!! :D:D:xD::D You went out this Halloween like that, right? That is a fantastic job.

On saturday and sunday. That's the advantage of pax! You can sleep in it.:D

Vauktu 11-01-2010 07:59 AM

Absolutely outstanding job. By far the best I've seen. :)

ISV Venture Star 11-01-2010 08:08 AM

Thanks for the compliments everyone. Personally I'm not satisfied, and will strive to make next year's a bit better.:)

Nice :)

That paint sounds difficult... wish I had that kind of skill :P

I just used normal bodypaint, if I slept in it then it would have come off and my bed would have turned blue :P

ISV Venture Star 11-03-2010 12:35 AM

Doesn't require skill, I just used trial and error (mostly error!). One thing I did find is that you really shouldn't mess with it until it's properly dry. The areas I painted carefully with multiple very thin layers came out great. The areas where I tried to hurry the process along by painting one thick layer, blowing hot air onto it with a hairdryer and applying talc in <15 minutes did not. Ended up with clumpy bits of talc and paint and I had to scrape it off and try again.

Having a second person doing the base coats while I stood completely still would have been better than doing that myself in sections as I did (I only used a second person when I needed my back painted).

Sight Unseen 11-05-2010 02:59 AM

This is... just... Epic Win! :)

ISV Venture Star 11-05-2010 06:52 AM

Irayo! I was so incredibly nervous about doing this. I had this little voice at the back of my mind telling me I was insane, that I would regret this, that it was the stupidest thing I'd ever done... but in the end it was great! I got great reactions from so many people: housemates, neighbours, partygoers, random people on the street, clubbers, family and friends back in the UK, work colleagues, internet people... I feel both relieved and excited- relieved that it went well, and excited because I've decided to do it all over again, but better! I want to look as much like a Na'vi as I possibly can. Next October is too far for me, so I'm going to take v2.0 to a local cosplay con in April.

Human No More 11-06-2010 11:19 PM

Nice :D

I don't know when I'll be able to do my next version... I'll have to find an excuse :awesome:

Find a cosplay event in London. I'm going to one in Brisbane and I hate anime. Better not say that when I'm actually there or they'll tear me apart like direwolves...

Also, if anyone has any suggestions for things that need improving on this costume, please tell me and I will add them to my to-do list. They have to be workable though, no "your eyes need to be larger and further apart, or "you need to be 3 metres tall" :P

I noticed the back stripes look a bit... painted on. Maybe next time you could outline them with painter's tape to get more sharply defined stripes? But then again I don't really know anything about this type of thing...

Woodsprite 11-09-2010 06:45 AM

It's because the way you painted yourself was actually authentic-looking. It looked professional.

Yeah, my housmates painted those. Will have to give them some designs beforehand.

One thing I'm definitely going to do is drop a couple of % points bodyfat. What should be a decent Na'vi -like V-taper is ruined by some minor but definite love-handles

That V taper is the way to look. Your look good! I have bigger love handles than you. Do you diet like crazy to get the last little bit of love handles off, or more aerobics, lift, or all of the above? I'm trying to get those last 10 lbs. off. It's a bitch. Any ideas?

Also I read your Na'vi. What did you use as your dictionary, Learn Na'vi? If you did this by memory you are a better man than me!

Irayo

ISV Venture Star 07-16-2011 07:12 AM

Primarily lifting and extensive carb reduction (I weigh everything I eat), occasional AM pre-breakfast cardio. I got down to a lower BF% for my April 2011 costume:

Instead of plunging into body paints, plunge into booze!
