Most Disappointing Videogames

Every single thread has been about our favorite games, so why not have a disappointing video games thread?

My personal disappointing games:

Starcraft 2:
SC2 was a huge disappointment for me. I was a modder for warcraft III. I worked on several large projects even making an Avatar game on wcIII (our website for that map recieved 30,000+ views). Seeing how mapmakers in SC2 are so restricted is a huge let down -- low map size limit, low maximum publishing limit, draconian censorship (I'm not talking about curse words, words like "own" and "suicide" are censored), and a bad UI for custom games.

Warhammer Online Age of Reckoning:
I really wanted this game to succeed. Being a huge fan of Eve Online, I was looking for a good PvP MMO in a fantasy setting. After huge hype and fanfare during development, the game withers up and almost dies after a month.

What were some of the most disappointing video games you played?

Elyannia 09-27-2010 04:10 AM

I'm a huge Pokemon fan and two of their games really dissapointed me. Pokemon Colosseum and Pokemon Battle Revolution =[

Layzie 09-27-2010 04:21 AM

I don't think I have been disappointed in a game. There has definatly been games I didn't like, but I'm not a huge gamer, I just play them sometimes, so I don't get too excited when most games are released. And since I dont get very excited, my expection level when going into a new game is normally low. But I am excited for Call Of Duty: Black Ops. It'll be the first time I am excited for a game in years.

Fighter-of-Wars 09-27-2010 05:51 AM

I think the Matrix Game sucked and Chrome Hounds for 360 was boring.

But most of the time, the games I buy I usually can make it through them and still be happy :)

Eltu 09-27-2010 08:46 AM

Deus Ex 2: Invisible War.

The first Deus Ex - a brilliant masterpiece, my very favorite game of all time.
The sequel - a dumbed down, consolified piece of txìm output not worthy the name of Deus Ex.

Elyannia 09-27-2010 08:48 AM

The Avatar game was a slight disappointment, like most games based off movies they usually sucked but for some reason I was hoping the game would just be as mind blowing as the movie T.T

rasomaso 09-27-2010 01:22 PM

Driv3r, I cannot say how much I anticipated it and how much I was disappointed when I read the 3/10 review on Eurogamer. To quote mad dogg from GTA: "damn, how could reflections mess up so bad?? Tanner, you suck!" I mean seriously, I couldn't even get past like 7th mission because of a bug.

Human No More 09-27-2010 03:19 PM

The Avatar game - as Elyannia said, it wasn't BAD, but I expected much more :(

That said, movie games in general are bad. The worst ever was the Eragon game though (terrible movie adaptation anyway though... ), I didn't even bother with the actual game since I was lucky enough to try the demo first.

Jak 3 - still a good game, but lacking the depth (and many of the features) of the previous game. At least they fixed the ridiculous spikes up and down in difficulty though where you would have an easy mission followed by a really hard one, then another easy one :P - it was by no means bad, but the storyline was a bit of a fail (basically, everything that happens by the end of the second game gets reversed or made worse again somehow) and despite having a few good things, there was certainly some missing depth and elements of the second game.

Myst V: End of Ages

This game was one HUGE let down... I don't know how many people here played other parts of the Myst series, but still...

Fkeu'itan 09-27-2010 03:33 PM

Anything post-1995 in the Sonic series.

What are all these pathetic attempts to 'revitalise' the series? Throwing random characters all over the place, transforming Sonic into a werehog, all the terrible 3rd person?

Stick to colourful, loud and fast 16 bit 2D.
You were good at that.

Earthlover18 09-27-2010 03:33 PM

Gears of War 2 Multiplayer was an EPIC screw up. (see what i did there)

This too.

I thought the worlds were still really nice to look at, and I thought that the shift to free movement was a good one, but they just made the puzzles so mind-bendingly dream-logic-inducingly insane that it was practically unplayable past a point.

Yeah, I thought the whole concept of slates was kinda pointless... And, personally, I preferred the pre-rendered hotspot graphics... :P

Totally agree, thats why I don't pay for it. I download it to see what it look like and I was suppose to buy if I liked it, but it was so disappointing:(

GP-5 09-27-2010 06:09 PM

Heroes of Might and Magic V..... stupidity at a whole new level.
Warhammer 40K Soulstorm. It made me sad, I loved the older games and then that tumor of an expansion showed up and wanted to play with the big kids.
Age of Empires III. At least the ragdoll was fun for a while.
World of Warcraft.

Davy Jones 09-27-2010 06:15 PM

World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade - ****ed up the game.
World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King - When everyone thought it couldn't get any worse...
World in Conflict - Just.. weird.

Alone in the dark was hands down the most retarded game I've ever played. The plot looked amazing, The cover looked great. The control scheme was abysmal. It turns out there is no plot and your being chased by wall monsters for like 5 hours. Never buy it unless you enjoy the feeling of regret.

I agree. Sorry Elyannia.

They really took that game in the wrong direction. I played vanilla for a while then quit during bc.

Yeah I've been playing since Vanilla too and I didn't think it was THAT bad but it could have been better....Cataclysm looks good though....hopefully lol

TheIknimaya 09-27-2010 11:09 PM

Gears of War 2.

Worst game ever. The campaign is for the most part, alright, but the online is just a total failure, a complete joke. It was supposed to be an amazing game, as Cliffy B said "Bigger, Better, and more Badass" that never happened, not even close.

Gears of War 2 is the WORST game ever.

X.,.Pandora.,.X 09-27-2010 11:46 PM

Gears of War 2....or Need for Speed Pro Street, I hated that game.

You mean the next gen :airquote: alone in the dark or the old ones? I played the demo of the new one on my PS3 when it came out, but I thought it was kinda like a showcase of special effects and destruction, which actually looked pretty bad lol. But I heard the old PSX ones were not that bad.

The new one, It was the worst excuse for a video game I've ever seen lol

I felt the same. Me and my dad played through all the myst games 1-4. Myst, Riven, Myst 3 and Uru. They were all great. But after that they just lost there feel.

Yep, total let down on this. I used to play the first 2 for hours on end. Like hours. Get up 2 hours before school to play it and play it when I got home for like 6 years. I loved it. But with the new game it just felt totally different. From the first game to the second it kept that AoE feel. But from 2 to 3 it just changed. I didn't like it.

I don't think I've ever played a video game that was really bad..Games seem to have both good and bad elements..:)

I am in the beta and I must say... it is AMAZING! They are doing everything they can to make it as hard as possible. I must say, it does feel like vanilla.

Actually, Uru is not the 4th Myst. Myst IV: Revelation is the 4th part ;)

Oh, and I play Uru Live, you can join me if you want. :)

GP-5 09-28-2010 08:27 PM

I forgot the last Carmageddon game. Carmageddon TDR 2000 is the old game with new grafics and a far worse physic engine than the earlier game. The map design have lost it touch and the game simply isn't fun compared to the old one which I love.

:D!!! Yay!! I have been playing the PTR with my bf for awhile and I really liked what I was allowed to see and this just makes the waiting more agonizing XD

*Looks at MW2* Yup, you know what you are. Hide your face for all eternity.

A very interesting tidbit of information I found, the worst Videogame perhaps ever created:

First runner up for worst video game of the decade (2000-2010) and winner of the "Flat-out Worst Game" award in 2004.
Ratings:
- 3.83% on GameRankings
- 8 out of 100 score on Metacritic
- 1.0 on GameSpot
- 0.0 on Netjak
- 1.0 on Thunderbolt Games

Sad thing is the game actually sold 20,000 copies.

Apparently running the game takes 50% of your cpu somehow.

The makers of the game couldn't even write a gramatically correct victory message:

I've never played URU live. Is it any fun? Whats it like?

I read about that...

It was basically unfinished... to the point there was NO AI AT ALL. The opponents just sat there :D

GP-5 09-30-2010 08:53 PM

Also got Big Rigs. There actually is a patch out there which makes the oponent move... but he suddently stops 1 meter from the finish...."You're the Winner!

This brings us to another game which I also have in my possesion.... Limbo of the Lost.
This game stole EVERYTHING from EVERYONE!
A small list of games they stole from.

Seriously.

Big Rigs Over The Road Racing - Television Tropes & Idioms
Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Quote:

Artificial Stupidity: Averted, as there is no AI at all. If you download the patch, the opponent rig will move...and then stop short of the finish line because there is no code for what happens when you lose a race. If anyone but the player happened to win, the game would crash.

Beyond The Impossible: Just how fast can your truck go in reverse? It depends entirely on how long you're willing to keep your finger on the Down Arrow.

Faster Than Light Travel: What you eventually achieve if you continuously accelerate in reverse.

Foregone Victory: You absolutely cannot lose, and even if you download the patch to make the opponent rig move it still stops short of the finish line. Even if it did somehow cross it, it still wouldn't win because there is no programmed failure state! Basically, it is literally impossible for any race to end in the player not winning.
*It gets even better! Sometimes, the game's code has trouble distinguishing between starting and finishing, so you might win the race the moment you begin.

So Bad Its Horrible: MetaCritic says, "8 [percent] -- Overwhelming dislike"
*And the only reason it's not a 0 is that some of the critics' ratings systems didn't go lower than 1. That's right, the lowest score possible on some rating systems actually brought the rating up.
*And Netjak even provided a link to the developers' website, telling the reader not to support them by buying any of their products.
*It is the only rated game on MetacCritic ever to have a single-digit score (its nearest competitor got 12).
Quote:

Although the packaging of Big Rigs states that the main objective of the game is to race their Big Rig to safety in order to deliver illegal cargo being carried by the vessel, while avoiding the local police force, in actuality, there are no police in the game, and no such objectives are presented within the game itself.

It garnered an 8 out of 100 score on Metacritic, with the only scores higher than 0 being 1, which were given by websites that did not have a 0 score,[8] giving it the lowest score of any game on Metacritic,[9] as well as an average score of 3.83% on GameRankings, making it the number one "All-Time Worst" video game on the website.
